Lions Grapplers Take On Eagles, Wildcats
Newaygo hosted Lakeview and Kent City in their first CSAA Tri of the season. This would also be the only home meet for Newaygo, so it was senior night as well. Senior Luke Acton started off the night with a pin, followed by senior Gavin Culver winning by pin. Trayton Kooistra and Aaron Garza brought in 6 points each for the team by forfeit making the score 24-0 at the time. Kent City caught right up with the Lions through forfeit. Senior Will Berenbrock brought back the excitement with a pin in his weight class! And Senior Brett Wismar ended the night with a nail biting match at 157 lbs, but ultimately falling short, bringing the final score to Kent City 51 to Newaygo 30. The two exhibition matches against Kent City included sophomore Brock Wismar, who kept the crowd on its toes and earned a pin with 0.8 seconds left! Sophomore Sam Eager took his opponent into OT, but came up just short of the win. Senior Will Berenbrock announced this night his plans to continue his wrestling and education career with Cornerstone University! After a very long match-up between Kent City and Lakeview, Newaygo prepared to take on the strong contingent of wrestlers from Lakeview. Pulling in wins were Kopp, Berenbrock and Brett Wismar (Kopp + Wismar by Pin and Berenbrock by decision 6-2). Cade Gerke, Brock Wismar and Sam Eager were able to participate in exhibition matches with the Wildcats and both Gerke and Wismar pulled in wins (Wismar by pin)!

Keglers at the alley and Grapplers on the mat
Bowling The Packers had a home match against Ravenna today at Fremont Lanes. The Girls team started out, throwing a 154 Baker game, but would end up falling short by 5 pins. The Bulldogs won the 2nd game and both Bakers with Fremont going down 10 - 0. From Coach Hopkins: “The team bowled average regular games but the Ravenna girls bowled better winning both games and the match 28 - 2” Fremont was led by Sophia Romine with a 173 and Annika Yuhasz added a 151. The Packer Boys started out slow, throwing a 111 Baker game but came back with a nice 171 and would take 4 out of the 10 possible points. They continue to improve, throwing their best two regular games of the season with outstanding games of 959 and 997. The team was led by Aston Yuhasz with games of 248 and 218, Kaden Johnson had 233 and a 218, and Luke Stitt had his best game ever, a 223. Wrestling The Packers had a good day on the mat finishing 2-0 on the day. Fremont beat North Muskegon in the first matchup in a tightly contested bout 37-34 and closed out the day with a rout of Ravenna 60-18. Outstanding wrestlers for Fremont on the day were; Chase Montague, Killian Prewitt, Tee Ward, Kayden Stenberg, Beckett Newell, and Trey Myers who all finished 2-0. The Packers will wrestle again this Saturday at Hopkins. Fremont 47 Grant 41 The Packers edged out to a 1 point lead after one and held a 22-17 lead halfway through the 2nd, but the Tiger defense forced the hosts into a series of turnovers and by intermission Grant had moved into a 28-24 lead.Coming out of the locker room theTigers built a 9 point advantage but the Packers regrouped and pulled within a point headed into the final frame. The 4th turned into a dogfight as the teams battled down the stretch with Fremont outshooting Grant in the final minuted=s to capture the win. Coach Zerfas: “We were able to beat a very good and well coached Grant team with grit, determination and a total team effort. It might not always show up on the stat sheet, but every girl that played tonight did her job and that is why we were able to win.” Coach Delamater: “We had a decent first half but succumbed to tired legs in the second. We haven't played since December 22 and it felt like game one all over again. It was fun seeing Pete on the sidelines and coaching against him again. He brings instant credibility to their program and the girls have definitely responded. Mia Clemence stuffed the stat sheet finishing with 18 points, grabbing a team high 10 off the glass and collecting 5 steals. Taylor DeKuiper and Riley Chase knocked down a half dozen points apiece and Khaila Noordyk and Eliana VandenBerg added 4 each Julie Ashbaugh and Alexa Obenauf each canned 10 points with Jocee Pleune hitting for 9. Fremont (7-2, 4-0) were to host Ravenna (3-5, 1-3) Thursday while Grant (4-3, 3-0) will visit Tri County (1-4, 1-7) Friday. Grant 82 Baldwin 57 The Tigers blasted the visiting Panthers taking a 9 point lead after one and hitting halftime up 11. The second half was more of the same with Baldwin unable to keep pace with a hot scoring Tiger squad. Zaiden Phillips led the scoring parade with 22 while Oakley Obenauf and Sincere Hatch dropped a dozen apiece. Zander Powell hit for 9 points and Kyle Cook added 8. Grant (6-3, 3-1) will return to conference play with a visit to Tri County (1-8, 0-4). Girls North Muskegon 54 Newaygo 43 The Lions kept the game close until the final frame when a 4th quarter shootout allowed the Norse to pull away for the win. Coach Thomasma: "Tough loss for us tonight. As a team, we just have to be more consistent in our play and focus. Effort was there but we missed too many shots that hurt us in the long run." Naomi Schillman led the Lions knocking down 10 points while Kija Schultz finished with 9 points to go with her 6 rebounds. Maria Riddering hit for 6 points and snared 6 steals. Newaygo (4-5, 1-3) hosts Lakeview (3-4, 1-3) Friday in a conference matchup. Boys Newaygo 63 Ravenna 57 Ravenna was able to get off to a good start in the first quarter taking a 20-12 lead. Newaygo battled back in the 2nd but still trailed by three at intermission. In the third, the Lions were able to take the lead and hold on for the win. Newaygo was led by Josiah Long with 24 points and 7 rebounds, followed by Logan Klomp with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, and Caris Nelson with 10 points and 5 assists. Newaygo (7-4, 3-1) will try to make it 3 wins in a row when they return to conference play Friday hosting Lakeview (2-9, 0-4) Whitehall: 80 Fremont 31 The Vikings came into this game undefeated, ranked 3rd in the state and sitting atop the Lakes division in the WMC.In a road trip to Whitehall the Packers got a glimpse at why the team has had such success. The visitors were never in this one as Whitehall took command of the game early and dominated play, snapping Fremont’s 4 game win streak. The Packers matched their lowest point total of the season in the loss. Coach Bowen: “ Whitehall is a very good team and they played with great energy. They really don't have any weaknesses that you can exploit. They have size, speed, athleticism, ball handlers and shooters. We did not execute or compete at a high enough level to be able to keep the game close.” Gavin Richards and Chaz Miller led Fremont with 10 points a piece. Fremont (5-7, 2-4) will head north Friday to take on Manistee (6-5, 1-4). White Cloud 40 Hesperia 9 The visiting Cloud team took care of business as they grabbed an early lead then shut down the Panthers holding them to just 2 second half points. Coach Wilk: “We played much faster and more aggressive after intermission, and that was what we were looking for. It was nice to get everyone substantial playing time, and almost everyone scored for us tonight. This game gets us back on track, and we hope to use the second half of tonight’s game as a springboard going into our conference matchup with Chippewa Hills on Friday. We are around the halfway point, and it feels like we continue to build in every game that we play. Annie Feldpausch and Jaden Gomez led the scoring parade knocking down 9 points apiece followed by Gracy Holmes who scored y and Payten Bird who hit for 5. White Cloud (5-6, 1-3) will host the Warriors (1-6, 0-3) Friday. Holton 30 Whitehall 27 It didn’t come easy but the Red Devils survived a trip to Viking country coming home with a close win on a night when they struggled a bit on the court. Coach Jordan: “Monday games are typically a little sloppy and tonight did not disappoint. We just struggled all night on really everything. Hit one outside shot all night, shot terrible from the free throw line, turned the ball over 20 times, didn't rebound for anything and had trouble catching the ball. We are honestly lucky to get out of Whitehall with a win. The one bright spot was we were able to hold them to 1 field goal and 3 points in the 4th quarter and got a few big stops towards the end of the game.. “We need to get our team intensity back to wear it needs to be and fast. Every game from here on out is gonna be a game where if we don't show up we won't win.. We are 8-2 on the season but I still feel we are not clicking on either end of the floor like we are capable of. But happy the girls were able to grind out a defensive struggle like tonight as there will be more down the road just like this.” Ryann Robins pulled down 10 boards to go with her 9 points while Aubrey Goings led the Devils in scoring as she hit for 13 points and collected 9 off the glass. Abbie Fowler dished out a quintet of dimes while snatching 4 steals. Holton (8-2, 2-2) returns to division play next week Tuesday when they travel to Ravenna (1-3, 3-5). We’re nearing the halfway mark of the local basketball season and decided to take a little peek at the progress of our coverage teams. Upcoming games listed are at home unless otherwise indicated.- N3 Sports Girls Newaygo 4-4, 1-3 8th place in CSAA Games this week: North Muskegon, Lakeview The Lions have yet to beat a team with a winning record. The rest of their schedule only lists one team currently having more W’s than L’s. Coach T’s team has struggled on offense, eclipsing the 40 point mark just once. The upside has been the defense most nights. The only teams to score more than 40 on the Lions were 2 of the region's top squads in Cedar and Morley. They are a gritty bunch who play hard despite the score. Holmes seems to be gaining confidence with each game and her ability to snare offensive boards has led to some crucial scoring for the team. Riddering and Lathrop generate a lot of energy, Schultz can provide a hot hand on occasion and Schillman has shown she can be an outside threat. This week: The Norse just beat a talented Holton team in OT and will be a tough test for the Lions. The Wildcats don’t score a lot either so it will depend if the Lion offense can get a spark. Grant 4-2, 3-0 and tied for 1st in CSAA Games this week: at Montague, at Fremont, at Tri County Three road games after not being on the court in nearly 4 weeks. Ashbaugh, Welch, Pleune and Rodriguez have been the most consistent players for Coach Delamater. Their 2 losses came against state ranked Spring Lake when the Tigers were missing some key players and Cedar Springs, a team that probably should be in the rankings. This week: Montague has only won 1 game so far but their schedule has been pretty tough and they are likely better than their record indicates. An old rivalry is rekindled with Fremont mid week and it should be a battle. TC is struggling and the Tiger speed will be a huge challenge for them. White Cloud 4-6, 1-2 7th place CSAA Games this week: at Hesperia, Chip Hills Another gritty team that struggles to score. In their last 8 games the team is averaging just under 20 a game. Coach Wilk’s squad hasn’t been at 100% for much of the season and are now getting healthy. The defense has been good but someone needs to come forward and start lighting it up. They have candidates such as Feldpausch, Holmes, Ringler, Gomez, the just returned Foondle and maybe others but they will need that game in, game out, scoring threat if they hope to have success going forward. With 2 very winnable games this week maybe that scorer will emerge. This week:. Hesperia scored 42 points in their first game win over Walkerville. Since then the Panthers have averaged just over 9 points a game. The Cloud follows that up with a Warrior team that can’t seem to stop teams from scoring giving up an average of 60 points their last 6 games. Fremont 6-2, 4-0 tied for 1st in WMC Lakes Games this week: at Mason County Central, Grant, Ravenna When N3 learned Coach Zerfas was coming back after a 2 year sabbatical we had to ask why. “Basically I missed it sitting up in the stands. Felt like I was just in the wrong part of the gym....not on the bench.” In his return to courtside Coach Z has done a nice job guiding the Packers to their best start in recent years. Their losses came in the Reed City Tourney final against CSAA conference rabbit Morley and in their season opener when they faced state ranked Spring Lake. Bennett is having a good year in the paint, DeKuiper seems to be everywhere, Clemence, Chase and many others can score, the defense has been solid and it’s a long bench. This week: The Pack hasn’t beaten a winning team yet. They get 2 shots at it this week. A rugged trio of games are on tap starting with a visit to state ranked MCC followed by a tough Tiger team coming to town. They also play Ravenna. The 3 wins by the Bulldogs were over teams with a combined 4-22 record. Holton 7-2, 2-2 4th in WMC Rivers Games this week: at Whitehall Tough overtime loss to conference rival North Muskegon last week. Coach Jordan has a team with varsity veterans and a lot of weapons. Cannady can find net with the best of them, we understand Bart is a threat beyond the arc and it seems we’ve been writing about the substantial skills of Fowler and Robins forever. This week:. A showdown with conference leading Hart was postponed and their meeting with the Vikings is their only game this week. Whitehall doesn’t score like the Devils can. If the RD shooters get hot early they’ll forget about last week’s loss quickly and start a new streak. Boys White Cloud 9-2, 2-1 Tied for 4th in CSAA Games this week: Chip Hills Coach Jones has a pretty solid bunch here. An early stumble in Shelby and a tough loss to Big Rapids are the only setbacks so far. The Robinsons, Reuther, Strait, Cruzan, Watson and a long bench of talent have come together well for the Cloud. They need to continue the improvement they have shown because they will finish their regular season with contests against a pair of state ranked teams, including current conference leader Reed City. This week: The Warriors don’t have the offensive firepower of the Cloud but it would be a mistake to underestimate them particularly if it’s close down the stretch. Fremont 5-6, 2-3 4th in WMC Lakes Games this week: at Whitehall, at Manistee After winning their opener in a walk, Coach Bowen’s team lost their next 6 games, the last an absolute blowout to St. Johns at the Reed City Holiday Tourney. To their credit they regrouped and beat Bellaire pretty handily in the consolation game. Since the calendar turned they have notched 3 more W’s and steadied the Packer ship. DeBlake, Miller, Mellema and Richards are the primary threats on offense. Defensively they have kept most teams within range. This week: Whitehall is ranked 3rd in the state for a lot of reasons, most prominent being the ability to score in a fast and furious manner. It’s not unusual to see them put up more than 70 and they hung 91 on OV last week. The Packers have yet to reach 70 in a game. Grant 5-3, 3-1 Tied for 2nd in CSAA Games this week: Baldwin, at Tri County The Tigers can put up points. Obenauf, Phillips, DeLong. Swanson and more can emerge as top scorer for Coach Schuitema’s squad and they play pretty good defense if we toss out a blowout in Ludington in the season opener. Thye loss to the Coyotes put a dent in their title aspirations but they remain a game back and waiting for a Reed City stumble. This week: Baldwin is a solid D4 team but Grant can run a lot of rotations out there and the Panthers would have to play their best to take down the Tigers on their home court. TC has lost 8 straight and while they are always tough at home they don’t match up well with Grant. Newaygo 6-4, 3-1 Tied for 2nd CSAA Games this week: at Ravenna, Lakeview The Lions are a bit enigmatic at times. Nelson, Long, Klomp, Kerr & Co. can look like a highlight reel at times but there are chunks of time when they seem a little out of sync. Coach Long’s team has yet to beat a team with a winning record and they’ve yielded over 70 points in their 4 losses. The next two games are winnable and important since next week they will be hosting 2 state ranked squads. This week: The Bulldog gym is a challenging place for visitors and the team is playing pretty good ball, coming into this one with 4 straight wins. On the other hand, unless Lakeview suits up a new student transfer who can knock down around 25 a game the Wildcats won’t be able to keep up with the Lion shooters. Boys Newaygo 71 Morley Stanwood 58 Newaygo and Morley Stanwood faced off in a conference matchup the day before the big winter storm hit. The game remained close throughout until Newaygo was able to put a few possessions together in the third quarter scoring 29 points. Newaygo was led by Josiah Long with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. Logan Klomp scored 14 points and pulled down 6 rebounds while Blake Kerr scored 13 points and added 6 rebounds. Caris Nelson scored 12 points and dished out 5 assists for the visiting Lions Girls Morley Stanwood 51 Newaygo 33 After a closely fought first quarter the Mohawks showed why they are one of the top teams in the region, knocking down 20 points while holding the Lions to a single bucket. Facing a 32-10 deficit after intermission the visitors regrouped and played their hosts evenly the rest of the way. Coach Thomasma: "We played a pretty good second half against a tough, talented and well coached Mohawks team. We have put together some strings of pretty good basketball this year but not for 4 quarters yet. We had a bad stretch in the 2nd period where we tucked our chins a bit out of frustration and against a state ranked team, they will make you pay for it everytime. We showed some character after halftime, responded well and just played ball. We hit some shots and took care of the ball and it showed on the scoreboard. Hopefully we can use that as a springboard the rest of the year. Naomi Schillman led the Lions in scoring with 11 points as she fired in a trio of triples in the second half. Kija Schultz scored 8 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 steals while Lillian Holmespulled 9 off the glass and added 7 points. Newaygo (4-4, 1-3) will host North Muskegon (5-3, 3-1) on Tuesday. Boys Fremont 58 Orchard View 50 The Packers made it 4 in a row with a conference win over the Cardinals. Coach Bowen: “We continue to improve and the boys are working extremely hard. We still have to clean up some things, but we are definitely headed in the right direction as a team.” Will DeBlake dropped 21 on the visitors to lead all scorers while Chaz Miller hit for 15 and Ben Mellema canned 13. Miller also dished out a half dozen assists and added 4 rebounds. Fremont (5-6, 2-3) will have their winning streak tested Tuesday when they visit Whitehall to face the undefeated Vikings who are currently ranked #3 in Division 2. Wrestling On Monday January 8th Grant hosted Fremont for a single dual towards the Newaygo County Championship. The match went back and forth with each team holding multiple leads, the Tigers got pins from Cameron Espinoza (120 lbs), Kashton Atwood (126 lbs), Alex Russo (132lbs) and Max Heitzman (165 lbs). Evan Clouser (285lbs) and Eddie Beight (138 lbs) also came away with victories. After a pin for Fremont at 175lbs and a double forfeit at 190lbs, the match was tied at 33-33, with senior Hunter Crosby coming up. Hunter pinned his Packer opponent in the 2nd period to win it for Grant. The Tigers wrestle at Lakeview this coming weekend in an individual tournament. Basketball Fremont 45 Whitehall 28 Coach Zerfas: “We were able to get a tough league win on the road at Whitehall 45-28. It was a grind as we did not shoot well (13-57) and came out slow again only scoring 6 points in the first quarter. It was tied 6-6 after one. Our defense played well and we were able to take a 21-15 lead into halftime and extend the lead to 33-20 after 3 quarters. Mia Clemence had 14 points and 7 steals. Jessica Bennett had 10 points, 9 blocks and 7 rebounds. Riley Chase had 8 points and 5 steals, Taylor DeKuiper had another all around game with 6 points 8 rebounds and 8 steals. Katie Ackerman had 3 points and 5 assists and both Eliana VandenBerg and Khaila Noordyk had 2 points. We are 6-2, 4-0 in league. Our next game is Friday at Manistee. Bowling The Packers boys had an away match against Holton at Northway lanes. They started out strong with a nice 182 Baker game of 182, but Holton kept it close throwing a 181. The boys would win the next Baker games and take all 10 of the Baker point's. Holton would come back hard throwing games of 886 and a nice 935. Holton would win a close match 17 - 13. The Fremont boys were led by Kaden Johnson with a 232 game, Owen Hertel had a 191 and Gavin Payne added a 176. The Fremont girls had an away match today against Holton at Northway lanes. They started out good with 147 Baker games but then threw a 104. They split the Baker games and took 4 out of the 10 points possible. They get back to bowing better with team regular games of 672 and 691. They would win both games and the match 22 - 8. The team was led by Sophia Romine with games of 170 and 151 and Annika Yuhasz added a 149. Lions Muzzle Dogs Newaygo 32 Ravenna 17 Ravenna got on the board first but Amaya Lathrop and Kija Schultz hit buckets and Naomi Schillman drilled one from beyond the arch to stake the Lions to an early lead. The Bulldogs followed with a 2 pointer by Mattisen Crowley and the first quarter ended with the hosts up 7-5. It would be the last points scored by the Dogs until a few minutes into the third period when Addison Gillard put an end to an 8-0 run by the Lions. By the time the teams entered the final frame the hosts held a 22-10 advantage. Ravenna scored to open the fourth but Newaygo responded as Schultz scored, Lillian Holmes hit for 2 in a row, Lathrop canned one and Riddering wove into the lane for 2 and the Lions took control and captured their second straight win. Coach Thomasma: "Good game for us coming out of Christmas Break. Thought the girls played really hard. It's never easy coming out of break and the girls showed up. We just have to continue working on our execution and finishing on the offensive end.”
Amaya Lathrop led the Lions with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Lillian Holmes rejected 5 Bulldog shots while adding 7 points and 7 rebounds and Maria Riddering finished with 6 points, 5 steals and 5 deflections. Newaygo (4-3, 1-2) will travel to Morley Stanwood (7-1, 4-0) Friday to face the league leading ‘Hawks. Holton Girls win 6th straight, Cloud Boys make it 5 in a row Girls Holton 35 White Cloud 16 These two teams met recently in the Holton Holiday Tourney, a game that saw the Devils run away early. The same result tonight but the White Cloud defense held the Holton team quite a bit closer than the first time around. Coach Jordan: “A game with a ton of missed shots. Credit to White cloud as I felt they played harder and more intense than us for most of the game. Lucky for us they couldn't hit shots either tonight. We just weren’t ourselves tonight, but there are always games like this so to be able to grind it out and stretch the lead a little every quarter is a good thing. During this win streak (now 6) we were averaging 54 points a game, so it’s nice to see us win a game where we struggled on the offensive end. We got to clean it up fast as we have a tough game tomorrow night at North Muskegon. Coach Wilk: “After winning a close game Friday, I was hoping to keep the ball rolling. We came out with our best defensive effort tonight, but we struggled offensively. We did a great job executing our offense, but we missed way too many good opportunities. If we made our open shots tonight we had a great chance to be in this one at the end. I was pleased with our intensity tonight. We are finally starting to be healthy, and I am glad Brooklyn Foondle is back for us because she adds a little spark offensively for us. Ryann Robins was huge in the paint pulling 17 off the glass while hitting for a game high 13 points. Abby Fowler dished out 6 dimes and added 6 points and Aubrey Goings pulled down 11 boards. Annie Feldpausch led WC with 6 points. Holton (7-1, 2-1) takes on N Muskegon Tuesday and White Cloud (4-6, 1-2) travels to Grant Friday. Boys
White Cloud 76 Holton 38 The Cloud extended their winning streak to 5 with another explosive offensive output. The tem is averaging over 70 points the last 4 games. Coach Jones: Proud of them, we've played our brand of basketball the last couple of weeks and it's showed. Noah Robinson had a game high 20 points, while KJ Strait hit for 18, Coleson Cruzan scored 12, and Jayden Robinson added 11. Jayson Ruether, Caleb Canning and Jacob Zimmer each finished with 5. White Cloud (8-2, 2-1) travels to Grant Friday. Holton (1-11 0-4) will host Crossroads Academy Tuesday. |
