 Tiger Tracksters Compete At Scottville The Tigers turned in some gutsy performances, on a cold, windy evening while competing in the MCC Optimist Invitational held in Scottville, MI. Colten Covington broke 10 minutes to win the 3200m run, and he was a member of the 3200m relay team, along with David Jaimes, Eli Bradley, and Spencer Cole which also earned a medal for their efforts.Spencer Cole also ran a season best time in the 1600 m run to pick up a medal. Chaise Konicki received medals in both of the throwing events, as he threw a season best in the Discus for a 2nd place finish. TJ Railling received medals in the Shot Put along with the 400m relay team where he teamed up with Trevor Lowry, Jared Evans, and Johann Vega. Benny Gonzales earned a medal and valuable points in the 110m High Hurdles, and Brett Long garnered a medal with a personal best performance in the Long Jump event. The Lady Tigers endured the cold windy weather in Scottville, MI as they competed in the MCC Optimist Invitational.The 3200 m relay team of Elizabeth Gates, Maggie Whitney, Sam Fryling, and Zoe Zimmerman, earned a medal for their efforts. Savannah Passage was able to earn a medal in the open 400m dash - doing it the hard way of running against the clock from the slow heat. Pack Track At Kathy Talus Invitational The boys finished 6th out of 9 teams on a cold and breezy day. This was a relay meet with a few open events. The boys set one meet record in the Super DMR (1200, 800, 1600, 3200). They bettered the old meet record by about 3 minutes in winning the event. Colton Best, Adam Ward, Nathan Walker, and Ben Schmidt were the relay runners. Other event placers were – Ben Schmidt 1st – 1600, Nathan Walker 2nd – 1600, 4x100 Relay (Wyatt Hanshue, Caleb Geeting, Tristin Marfia, Wesley Ekkel) – 5th, Seth Vogel 6th – Shot Put, Wesley Ekkel 5th – High Jump.

 Harris hits hat trick, defense yields just 2 shots on goal
The Fremont girls' soccer team had dropped 3 of their last 4 matches and 2 in a row heading into Friday's match up with the Tigers of Shelby. Thankfully for the Packers things started off well and continued the rest of the night. Bre Harris opened the scoring off a crossed ball by Taylor Crowley just a minute into the match. Harris added another first half goal off an assist by Natalie Jamieson with twenty minutes to play in the half. Harris was taken down just outside the 18 setting up a Holly Kortge set play goal just 10 minutes later. The score was 3-0 going into the half. Harris completed her hat trick with another assist by Jamieson. The final score was Fremont 4 - Shelby 0. The Packers outshot the Tigers 10-2. Taylor Mulder made 2 saves in net for the Packers on the way to her first shutout of the season. The Packers improve to 4-3 overall and the Tigers fall to 2-3. Holton 8-9 White Cloud 2-0
The Indians were finally able to get conference play started Tuesday night, but they looked like a team that had not played in 2 weeks(which they had not). The girls struggled to get the rust knocked off and dropped both games of the doubleheader to Holton. Madeleine Seabrook had 3 hits in the first game, followed by Hallie Schulz with a pair of hits and Elexis Plotts had an RBI double. Seabrook had 2 more hits in the 2nd game. White Cloud 15-16 Lakeview 0-1 The Indians were able to bounce back from their struggles on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Lakeview Thursday. Hannah Brown led the attack in the first game with 4 hits including a triple and a solo home run and 3 RBI’s followed by Hallie Schulz with 2 hits, one of which a double and 2 RBI’s and Madison Smith had 2 hits with an RBI. Hallie Schulz got the win with 5 K’s in the 5 inning 15-0 victory. The girls kept it going in Game 2 knocking off the Wildcats 16-1 in 3 innings. Allison Schulz collected 4 RBI’s, Elexis Plotts had a double and 2 RBI’s, Madeleine Seabrook and Olivia Bowman each had 2 hits with a double and Hannah Brown had a hit and 2 RBI’s. Kara Davis picked up her first Varsity win striking out 4. White Cloud 4-16 Morley Stanwood 1-6 In Friday’s first game Morley opened the scoring with a solo HR in the bottom of the 2nd. White Cloud tied it up with a triple from Madison Smith and a Sac Fly from Madeleine Seabrook. The Indians went up 1 in the top of the 4th and stayed that way until the top of the 6th when Olivia Bowman & Hannah Brown each drew walks followed by Hallie Schulz who singled to load the bases. Allison Schulz singled scoring Bowman & Brown. Allison Schulz had 2 hits & 2 RBI’s while sister Hallie had 6 K’s, allowed only 3 hits and walking none for a 4-1 win. In the nightcap, the Cloud scored in every inning except the 5th enroute to a 16-6 win. Hannah Brown hit for the cycle plus drew a BB and had 2 RBI’s, Elexis Plotts had 3 hits with a HR and 4 RBI’s, Madison Smith had 3 hits with a 2B, HR and 2 RBI’s. Hallie Schulz had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s followed by Kora Wright with a pair of hits. Kara Davis got the W striking out 3, but better yet, walking none.  Reed City 11-15 Grant 3-0
In the opener the Tigers watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 11-3 loss to Reed City on Tuesday. The Coyotes scored in the first and then again on a single by Morrison in the second inning.The Tigers struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively, giving up 11 runs including 7 in the fifth inning. "We actually played a good 4 full innings,” said Coach Rider. “We had two outs in the 4th and an error opened the floodgates. Runs have been few are far between for us, we can't afford to walk batters and commit errors when the ball is in play." Wirth took the win for Reed City. He went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one. Tristen Chesebro took the loss for Grant Tigers Varsity. He allowed four hits and eight runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking8. "All the walked batters finally caught up to us. Our pitching staff needs to lock down and focus on throwing strikes." Grant racked up eight hits led by Kyle Bay with three hits in three at bats. "Kyle is really seeing the ball well right now. We have 6 freshman on the team and he is one of them that is adapting to the varsity level pitching." Reed City collected nine hits on the day. Morrison, Major, and Kailing each racked up multiple hits for Reed City. Morrison went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Reed City in hits. In the second game the Coyotes blasted their way to a 4 inning win with 6 runs in the first and third innings while holding the Tigers to just one hit. “Baseball is a game of giving yourself a chance to succeed." Said Coach Rider. "Right now our pitchers are struggling to throw strikes and we are walking way too many.”  Facing Reed City on the road the Packers started the scoring when Samantha Schmidt struck a ball from the top of the 18 and found the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Packers that was the end of the scoring for the day. Reed City proceeded to score 5 unanswered goals. The score was 1-1 at the half but the Coyotes took control in the second. Fremont still outshot the Coyotes 15-13 for the match but simply couldn't finish. Audrey Johnson and Torey Reichert-Slater combined for 8 saves in net for the Packers. The Packers fell to 3-3 overall and in the conference and the Coyotes improved to 2-2 overall and in the conference.

The visiting Tigers swept all the flights in their first conference dual match against the Packers. Olivia Keelean did not give up a game at #1 singles. Brooklyn Presler and Kathryn Stong won 6-1 6-2 at the top doubles position. Liberty Pleune and Kaitlyn Pascoe won without losing a game as well at #4 doubles. Madi Rodriguez and Beth Ann Golden won 6-1 6-4 in JV action, as did Chi Diep and and Madison Jordan. Thursday: Ludington 6 Grant 2 The Tigers got off to a slow start after the long bus ride, but got the rackets swinging better in the second sets. #1 singles Olivia Keelean fought back from an early deficit to take the first set 6-4 and then 6-0 in the second. Jill Arends at #3 singles won 6-0 6-2. The team of Stong and Presler won the second set 6-4 at #1 doubles. Liberty Pleune and Kaitlyn Pascoe, the Tigers #4 doubles team, played a long tough match taking about 2 hours, fighting to the end 5-7, 7-5, 3-6. Grant's #3 doubles team of Elvira Cruz and Cecilia Ovalle took their opponents right to brink in the second set 5-7. Emma Hetler and Nya Woodland were right there with a 5-8 pro set. Picking up their second JV tennis wins were Morgan Woodard and Amber Luckett. Monday Games, Matches SOFTBALL Tigers, Warriors Split Western Michigan Christian defeated Grant 10-0 in five innings in the opening game of a doubleheader. Starting pitcher Maria Sanocki no-hit the Tigers, striking out six and walking just two. Sanocki, Catherine Bradford-Royle, Hannah Nestell, Abby Sweetman, and Taylor Mosher each notched an RBI for the Warriors. In the nightcap, the Tigers sent seven players across the plate in the first inning then held back a late Warrior charge to gain the split. Alissa Diltz picked up the win for Grant striking out two, and walking none. Carlie Stray had three hits and 4 RBIs topace the Tiger offense with Diltz and Abbi Konicki eachplating a pair. Maria Sanocki led WMC with three hits and three RBIs and Catherine Bradford-Royle knocked a solo home run for the Warriors. SOCCER Cats Claw Past Pack The Fremont Packers took at 3-1 conference record into Monday evening's match against the 2-1 Wildcats of Lakeview. Lakeview started the scoring just 8 minutes in when Amanda Larson beat Audrey Johnson in net for the goal. The score remained 1-0 until Lakeview added their second score 22 minutes into the second half. This time Larson scored off a set play from 25 out. The Packers finally answered with 4 minutes to play but it simply wasn't enough. Calla Miller scored Fremont's lone goal on a pass from Bre Harris. The Packers outshot the Wildcats 13-12. Audrey Johnson, Natalie Jamieson and Torey Reichert-Slater combined for 10 saves while Danielle Carpenter made 12 saves for the Wildcats. The Packers fell to 3-2 overall and in the conference while Lakeview improved to 3-1 overall and in the conference.  TENNIS
Grant Netters Sweep Past WMC Olivia Keelean and Emerson Cole blanked their opponents while Jill Arends yielded just a single game as the Tigers dominated singles play (Kierstyn Throop won by default). In doubles the the #2 team of Miriam Delgado-Sydney Patin and #4 Liberty Pleune-Kaitlin Pascoe each shut out their Warrior foes while #1 Kathryn Stong-Brooklyn Presler lost once and #3 Elvira Cruz-Cecilia Ovalle dropped just two on their way to straight set wins. Rocket Invitational The boys put out a decent showing in their first outdoor meet running in the white division of the Rocket Invitational. We are a very young team this year and should gain much experience. I was quite impressed with Ben Schmidt (SR) and Nathan Walker (FR) running in the 9:40s in the 3200 run their first attempt. I was also impressed with Freshmen Case Dekryger and Wes Ekkel running a solid 400 in their first attempt at the distance. Athletes who scored points for us in the Rocket invite were. Adrian Zerlaut (Sr) 200 dash, Wes Ekkel 400 dash/High Jump, Case Dekryger 400 dash, Adam Ward (Fr) 800 run/4x800, Ben Schmidt 3200 run/4x800, Nathan Walker 3200 run/4x800, Ben Paige (Fr) 3200 run, Ben DeVries (Sr) 3200 run, Seth Vogel Shot Put/Discus. Cougar Invitational With a short turn around due to a meet reschedule we performed a little tired but had a few solid performances. We did have a few athletes record big improvements. First year thrower Dylan Essebaggers (Jr) recorded at 2 foot PR in the Shot Put as he continues to learn the event. In the 3200 run Ben Paige (Fr), Adam Ward (Fr), and Seven LaRoue (So) all cut large chunks of time from their personal records. Adam ran a fantastic race in his first attempt as distance runner, moving up from the 800. His pacing was great as his second mile was 1 second faster than his first. Athletes who scored points in the meet were Nathan Walker (Fr) 1 mile run, Ben Schmidt (Sr) 1 mile run/3200 run.  On Thursday the Tigers got their second dual match in after multiple cancellations due to the cold and snow. The team battled the wind and cold, but fought hard winning many games before eventually falling 5-3 to a veteran Big Rapids team. Jill Arends at #3 Singles and Kirstyn Throop at #4singles picked up wins as Arends won 7-6 (5) 6-2 and Throop didn't give up a game winning 6-0 6-0. Kaitlyn Pascoe and Liberty Pleune won 6-3 6-3 at #4 Doubles.
Friday perennial top 10 team Traverse City St Francis for their first home dual match of the season. The home team got solid play from all 8 flights as Kathyrn Stong and Brooklyn Presler won 5 games at #1 Doublesand . Jill Arends battled for almost an hour and a half with many long hard hitting rallies, winning 6 games at #3 singles. Saturdays tournament at North Pointe Christian featured most of the state's top division 4 teams who will be competing for the state championship at the end of the season. TC St. Francis proved they should be in the top 10 rankings finishing in a tie for first with #2 ranked Jackson Lumen Christi. The Academy of Sacred Heart, state ranked #3, was missing their #2 singles player and was only 1 point behind the top two teams. #8 ranked North Pointe Christian was 4th, #9 North Muskegon was 5th and Grant was 2 points behind in 6th. Grant's number one singles, Olivia Keelean had to face the best player in the tournament first from JLC, but came back to beat Kalamazoo Christian in her last match of the day. The Tiger's #2 singles player, Emerson Cole went 3 sets with North Muskegon to open the day, and then bounced back to beat Lansing Catholic and Kalamazoo Christian to go 2-1 on the day. Jill Arends at #3 singles also beat Lansing Catholic. Kirstyn Throop finished in 3rd place, beating NPC 6-2 6-0 in the first round and then taking out North Muskegon in her last match. The Tiger's #1 doubles team of Presler and Stong went 3 sets with runner up TCSF in the first round and finished with a win vs Kalamazoo Chr. Delgado and Patin at #2 Doubles played North Muskegon to a second set tiebreak. Elvira Cruz and Cecilia Ovalle finished in fourth place but played a great 2nd set against runner up TCSF and JLC. Kaitlin Pascoe and Liberty Pleune took out North Muskegon in a tough 3 set battle at 4 Doubles.  Back to back meets put the Packer girls team up against a rugged roster of teams this past weekend. Friday at Reeths Puffer Kylee McDonald leapt 14’2” to capture first place in the long jump and followed it up with a 3rd place finish in the b200 with a 29:19. Kendra Fowler took top honors with a 2:39:47 run in the 800. Hannah Hamilton, (1600 5:35.79),Katie Nicholas (400 1:04.64),and Riley Sweet (3200 12:49.73) each finished second and the 4x800 team of Fowler, Hamilton, Leah Converse and Sweet finished 3rd as did the 4x400 team of Fowler, Hamilton, Converse and Nicholas. Klayre Callison ran to a 6th place finish in the 300 hurdles and Hanna Hallberg tossed her wy to a 6th place in the discus. On Saturday, the team traveled to Grand Rapids Catholic Central and competed in the Cougar Invitational. The Packers finished 12th out of 14 schools. Katie Nicholas (Jr) finished 6th out of 32 in the 400 running her PR of the season with a 1:04.60 and Hannah Hamilton (Jr) finished 6th out of 27 in the 3200 running her PR with a time of 12:08.86. |
