A switch of start dates left the girls basketball teams in the state of Michigan waiting one extra week after the boys to begin their seasons. The first day of practice for the girls was November 12 with the first possible game date being December 3. Central Montcalm won the CSAA Gold Division last year for the ladies in solid fashion, and is a strong contender to back that up again this year. The teams in Newaygo County are looking to disrupt their flow.
Coaches in Near North Now’s coverage area were asked to provide information for their upcoming seasons including returning players, newcomers, players to watch, strengths, weaknesses and an overall outlook on the season. Each team’s athletic page can be found in the links on Near North Now’s sports page for season schedules and rosters. Fremont John Krim, Head Coach Returning starters: We had 3 returners who scored over a hundred points for us. Calla Miller 10th – 174-pts or 8.2 pg Natalie Jamieson 11th 3 year varsity player – 136 pts or 6.4 pg Chloe Shriver 11th grade – 103 points or 4.9 pg Other Returners: Tori Reichert-Slater 12th Paige VandenBerg 11th Newcomers : Kaitlin Waite – 11th Rhi Pafford – 11th Avery Curnett 11th Madison Foster 11th Allysa Gustman 11th Mula Cnaan – 12th German Exchange Student Haley Zerlaut 9th Team strengths: Even though we are young we have a lot of varsity experience this season. We had key players hurt most of last year and these young girls went from backup players to starters or key substitutes. We expect to be a much better shooting team this year than last as we think all 5 returners could score double digits on any given night. Team Challenges: We are young with just a single senior returning from last year’s team. We are not really big with no true post player so rebounding will be one of our challenges. Our league’s overall depth will be better this season, there should be competitive game just about every night. Central Montcalm is the heavy favorite (20 – 0 with everyone back). Coach Quote on team: “The work ethic has been terrific is our preseason practices. Very excited about this group of young ladies and can’t wait for our season to start.” Newaygo Nate Thomasma, Head Coach 2017-18 record (overall, conference, tournament finish): Overall: 5-16 Conference: 2-12 (7th out of 8th) TF: Lost to TC in the 1st round of districts. Returning starters (grade): Jaylee Long (10th grade) Lily Reuhmeier (10th grade) Other Key Returners (grade): Mya Berwald (12th grade) Daniella duChemin (12th grade) Sarah Behnke (12th grade) Sophia Frisbie (11th grade) Key newcomers (grade): Amaya Vandyke (11th grade) Savannah Hill (11th grade) Kyla Rounds (11th grade) Jessica Sanchez (11th grade) Madi Berwald (11th grade) Kendall Mathis (10th grade) Emerson Goodin (9th grade) Jaxi Long (9th grade) Player to watch (quick word on them): Jaylee Long: Jaylee is a returning All Conference player. She led the team in scoring and assists last year. Lily Reuhmeier: Lily was our second leading scorer last year. She also led the team in rebounds. Sophia Frisbie: Sophia was the 6th man last year. She is a gritty player willing to play any role on the team. Team strengths: The team pushes the ball up the floor pretty well. We will need to use our quickness to our advantage. Team Challenges: Height and youth. Our tallest player is only 5'8". We will have to scrap and rebound the ball as a team or we will be in trouble. We are also pretty young. With that can come some inconsistent play at times. We will need to grow up fast because we have some tough games right out of the gate. Coach quote on team: "They've been a good team to be around. We just have to get consistent hard work at practice everyday to continue to grow and get better." Tri-County Alyssa Alger, Head Coach Returning Players: Jessica Thompson, Summer Longstreet, Emma Sickelsteel, Grace Miller, Alicia Bowen Tri-County New to Varsity players: Taylor Longstreet, Abi Mitz, Alison Myers, Sequoya Drilling, Alayna Merlington, Mary Siple, Aubrey Hearth Outlook for the season: Being a first year varsity coach at a new school, there will be challenges early because it is a whole new system to these girls but they have a great work ethic and really have bought into what I am trying to do. We have a lot of girls that are athletic so I want to use that to our advantage. We play in a tough conference with Central Montcalm and Big Rapids so it will be important that we stay competitive in every game that we play. White Cloud Kurt Brown, Head Coach White Cloud comes into the season with high hopes and expectations. Coming off a 16 win campaign which included a district finals appearance, the Indians’ goals are set high. White Cloud returns 7 players including 4 starters. With the addition of 4 underclassman, the mix looks promising. Returning starters: Hannah Brown (senior guard) *4 year starter that led us in every statistical category and the heart and soul of the squad. Hallie Schulz (senior center) *3 year starter that will be asked a lot more of. Great scorer and rebounder. Olivia Bowman (junior guard) *3 year starter that truly does all the intangibles for our squad. She is a stat stuffer and needs to continue being the glue for our squad. Alexis Straight (sophomore guard) *Alexis is riding high after a great 2nd half of the season last year. No longer a freshman, she’ll need to continue to step up and be the sharp shooter we need her to be. Returning players: Haley Foster (senior guard) *Defensive specialist that needs to continue her craft. Kayla Pasch (senior guard) *Spark plug offensively that will be asked to contribute more. Layna Yeiter (junior forward) *Defense and rebounding is her game. She brings toughness and physical play when called upon. New additions: Cassie Watson (sophomore forward) *Could potentially be our starting forward. Brings defense, toughness, and athleticism. She can run the floor better then any big I’ve ever head. Skies the limit. Jemi Perrin (junior guard) *Leader of the JV team last year. Excellent shot and guard skills. Potential first guard off the bench. Britany Ringler (senior forward/center) *Fresh off a major knee injury that cost her junior season, Britany has made huge strides and is set to contribute with defense and rebounding. Madison Smith (senior guard) *This is Madison’s first year of organized basketball. She has a lot to learn but is extremely athletic and will help later in the year.

November 5th marked the first day of practice for the boys basketball teams this season across the state of Michigan. Newaygo county schools represent both divisions of the CSAA Conference with teams in the gold and silver divisions. Last season, Fremont and Big Rapids each took a share of the CSAA Gold Championship.
Fremont Peter Zerfas, Head Coach, 19th year, 268-139 2017-18 record (overall, conference, tournament finish): 17-7, 11-3 1st place in conference, District Champions, lost in semi-finals of Regionals to South Christian Returning starters (grade): Logan Karnemaat Sr. All-conference, All-State Calvin Miller Sr. All-conference Carter Moon Jr. Other Key Returners (grade): Julian Echavaria Sr. Jaxx Miller Jr. Noah Christensen Sr. Key newcomers (grade): Tristan Campbell Jr. Chris Kennedy Jr. Braiden McDonald So. Joshua Zerfas So. Cody Moon Jr. Jacob Visser Jr. Trevor Rasch Jr. Player to watch (quick word on them): Logan Karnemaat is a returning All-State player and has already broke our school record for blocks. He was constantly double teamed and sometimes triple teamed last year and still put up 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks per game. Calvin Miller is 6’5 and has gained valuable muscle and strength, he is athletic and talented and one of the best returning players in the league. Team strengths: We have depth this year. Last year if we were missing even one starter we were not nearly as good of a team. This year we are much deeper in all positions. Team Challenges: Our early season schedule is as tough as I remember in my 19 years as varsity coach. We play at Ludington, at Reed City, at Big Rapids and have Montague, Sparta and Shelby all before Christmas break. Coach Quote on team: “We have height, athletic ability and depth. We return a few key players who are talented, but the bulk of our team is very inexperienced. How the younger players come along will be key to our success.” Grant Joe Schuitema, Head Coach Returning Players: Connor Vanderwilt, Senior Carter Chase, Junior Brett Long, Sophomore New to Varsity players: David Jaimes, Senior Anthony Hernandez, Junior Ricky Honeysette, Junior Ben Kelley, Junior Robert Diesel Rose, Junior Seth Schuitema - Freshman Outlook for the season: We plan to play a smart, unselfish brand of basketball to make up for our lack of varsity experience and overall court time together. Coach quote on team: “We hope to be competitive each night and to represent our school and community well.” Hesperia Doug Bolles, Head Coach Returning players: Sr., Jacob Klemundt, G, 5’8 Jr, Logan Balkema, G/F, 6’0 Sr, Ashton Arnold, G/F, 5’10 Sr, Johnny Segura, F, 5’9 Sr, Jonathan “Shorty” Castillo, G, 5’9 New players: Sophomore, AJ Perysian, G, 5’8 JR, Kaiden Robbins, F, 6’3 Season outlook: Strengths- Effort and attitudes ... Weaknesses- low numbers (only 7 players), height (only 2 players over 6 foot tall)... Morley Stanwood and Kent City should be the top two teams in the league, with Holton being the sleeper. Coach quote on team: “We’ll be leaning on returning All Conference CSAA player Jacob Klemundt for the bulk of our scoring, with Junior Logan Balkema also a returning starter to elevate his game this season. We’ll be low in numbers and in size, but not heart and effort! We’re not going to put up a lot of points, so we better play good defense!” Holton Luke Houseman, Head Coach Returning players: Drew Trygstad, Nate Slowik, Aaron Herron, Aidan Poling, Michael Ward, Derek Pouch From last year JV’s: Cody and Chip Wright and Caleb Kitchka Transfer: Taylor Johnson Outlook on the season: I took this position at the very end of July. I didn’t get to work with the kids at all in the summer. We had a great football season, making it to the semifinals in Division 8. A number of my players played on that team. We will not start official practice until Monday November 26th. We are way behind right now. Our quote we live by is “Win the Day”. We want to practice and play at a consistently high level and be better today than we were yesterday. We are going to progress a lot through the season. Our goal is to be playing our best basketball come tournament time. League Predictions: From what I am hearing Morley Stanwood should be at the top of the league this year. Newaygo Joseph Barrette, Head Coach The 2018-19 Newaygo Lions hope to improve on last year’s campaign of 14 wins by meeting team goals they fell short of a year ago. “Team speed and team chemistry have me excited about the possibilities for this team,” explained coach Barrette. Returning starters: Connor Swinehart, Kade Bhuyan, Ryan Brummel, Noah Cantu, Gabe Limberg Newcomers:: Seniors Adrian Briones and Jasper Sanderson; Juniors Carson Bush, Noah Painter, Carlos Magana, and Francisco Rios; Sophomores Jarrod Wismar and Wyatt Mortensen Coach’s quote on team: “We will play with energy and enthusiasm. Our goal is to represent our school with class and dignity every time we take the floor,” asserts Coach Barrette. The Lions will open up their season on December 4th at Lakeview with a total of 5 games before a break over the holiday season. White Cloud Bob Jones, Head Coach Coach quote on team: “We have two returning starters from last year, but return six that contributed a lot of minutes. Height will once again be our struggle against taller teams, but our team speed, hustle and ability to hit shots should help even the score. Looking to be a respectable five hundred team or better this year.” Seniors #0 Adrian Rodriguez #10 Trent Jones #24 Collin Crotser #34 Chance Montemayor Juniors #20 Steven Holt #22 Jake Foster #32 Tom Feldpausch #44 Alex Doke Sophomores #13 Dexter Cox #30 Sam Venema Openers: Tigers Triumph, Packers Prevail, Comeback Clips Cloud
Grant 56 Whitehall 44 The Tigers got off to a bit of a slow start in their opening game as the Vikings inched out to an 11-9 lead at the end of one. The second stanza was a different story as Connor VanderWilt lit it up, draining a quartet of triples to help give the hosts a 27-19 lead at the break. The teams traded buckets in the third as Grant kept an 8 point advantage heading into the final frame. In the 4th Seth Schuitema fired in three from beyond the arc and the Tigers made their free throws down the stretch as the team grabbed win number one under new head coach Joe Schuitema. VanderWilt finished with 19 points with Schuitema and Carter Chase hitting for 16 apiece. Terrell Harris led the Viking attack with 12 and Ethan Mackenzie added 9. The Tigers play a pair at home next week with Shelby coming for a visit on Tuesday before Friday’s conference opener with Central Montcalm. Fremont 75 Shelby 50 The Packers opened their season with a convincing win over Shelby in the season opener for both schools. Fremont roared to a 17-8 lead after one before stretching it to a 15 point advantage by intermission. The break did nothing to help the Tigers as the Pack poured it on in the third to take control with a 25 point spread heading in the 4th. The uptempo contest saw Shelby try to neutralize the height advantage of the hosts by double and triple teaming interior players Logan Karnemaat and Calvin Miller leaving wide open shots from the outside as 7 different Packers knocked down 11 3 point shots. Logan Karnemaat led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points to go with his 5 blocks. Joshua Zerfas, Jaxx Miller and Christian Kennedy each hit for 9, while Calvin Miller, Braiden McDonald and Carter Moontallied 7 apiece. Jacob Visser finished with a half dozen, Julian Echavarria dropped in 5 to go with his 11 rebounds, Tristan Campbell had 4 points and 11 rebounds and Noah Christensen rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Shelby was led by Tyler Schouter with 16 points and Tristan Landis with 12. The Packers will hit the road next week with a Tuesday trip to Ludington then head north again Friday to face Reed City in the conference opener Hart 59 White Cloud 52 It was the season opener in White Cloud and the Indians built a 30-17 lead by intermission but the Pirates persevered and came back to pull out the non conference win. “We got out hustled in the second half,” said Cloud Head Coach Bob Jones. “ The whole team played pretty well, but we have a lot to work on.” Sam Venema led the team with 18 points while Steven Holt hit for 13 and Alex Doke dropped in 9. The Indians will head for Stanton Friday to face Central Montcalm. North Muskegon 70 Hesperia 21 Lakeview 45 Tri County 39 A pair of local volleyballers with some serious credentials were honored by being named to All State teams in their respective divisions this week.
Olivia Keelean capped off a three year varsity career as a Grant Tiger with a spot on the Division 2 2nd team. Ms. Keelean was the team captain for the Tigers this season and gathered all conference, all area dream team and all region honors on her way to being named all state. She ended the season with 449 kills, 406 dig, and 40 service aces to her credit. With graduation looming this spring Keelean plans to bring her game to Cornerstone University next fall where she will pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy while hopefully taking to the court for the Golden Eagles. Alexis Strait has a bit of time to think about her post high school plans. The 5’5”sophomore setter piled up 683 assists, 196 kills, 105 aces, and 458 digs this season helping the White Cloud team to second place in the Silver and a spot in the district finals. For her efforts she landed a spot on the Division 3 3rd team. Coach Desirae Strait: “The dedication Alexis has to improving herself shows in her offseason commitment. Her personal goal is to do everything she can to make her players and team feel successful.” Ms. Strait also gathered all conference and all region honors enroute to the all state team. By Ken DeLaat
Photo by Dan Packard In the end it was too much Reading. The powerful Ranger squad had cut a swath through their regular season schedule and pounded their way to this last step before the Ford Field Finals. They started the year with a trip to Detroit in their sights and a squad with most of the same players who took the field in the D7 playoffs last year. After Reading’s Land Shark defense pitched their seventh shutout of the season against the Red Devils, the run finally came to an end for Holton’s team of destiny. A squad that surprised everyone with this spirited sprint to the semi-finals. The Devils, as will be said about 31 of the 32 teams in the D8 playoffs, lost their final game of the season. But what a season it was. Behind a coach in his final year on the Red Devil sidelines this team captivated a community with a variety of heroes emerging each game on both sides of the ball and a rugged determined group of pit dwellers grinding it out in the trenches. Holton made the playoffs for the 5th time in school history and the first time in over a decade. There had been no 10th game since the seniors on this team were in kindergarten. Once in, by a razor’s edge I might add, they embraced the playoff scene like an old friend. Postseason football is different and it is no surprise that you see the same teams advancing each year. As tough as it is to win any football game it becomes a much more demanding task in the playoff rounds. For programs unaccustomed to the rigors of the one and done season each win can bring on more apprehension as the team ventures into unknown territory. When the Devils welcomed in the Mendon Hornets to their home field for the regional title game (after two wins on the road) they were hosting a program that has missed the playoffs just twice in 30 years. A school and a program accustomed to making lengthy postseason runs. Over the years the Hornets have made a dozen trips to the final game and emerged from those with a state championship 11 times. It was their ninth regional final in the last eleven years. But none of that mattered because on a cold wintry day on a newly shoveled off field the Devils played as if they knew what the outcome was going to be from the start. No one was going to come into their house and end their season regardless of what playoff pedigree the program presented on arrival. No one. This is a legacy team for Holton High School. A source of pride and inspiration for the way they shook off a late season slide to come together and fire off three more wins. If the players, coaches, student body, and perhaps the whole community walk with a bit of swagger these days it is well deserved. After all, there are 6 schools in the Silver Division of the CSAA and each of them have made their share of trips to the playoffs over the years. Of all those teams who extended their season only one has made it through four post season games. On Holton! A chat with Coach Nummerdor as Holton preps to play for a shot at the title
By Ken DeLaat Photos by Dan Packard It has been a memorable season for the Red Devils to say the least. There are 543 teams competing in high school football (11 player variety) in 8 Divisions. In each Division 32 of those teams advanced to the one and done playoff season and in D8 28 of those teams are no longer playing. But Holton is. The Devils lost to Kent City, Pine River, Tri County, and Morley Stanwood during the season. Each of those teams made the playoffs and yet none will be suiting up this weekend. But Holton will be. This is a team with a community that has embraced them, a spirit that has enveloped them and a coach that has believed in them. They will take on the Reading Raiders at 1pm Saturday at Harper Creek High School in Battle Creek with the winner advancing to the championship game Thanksgiving weekend in Detroit. We caught up with a busy and highly focused Coach Jack Nummerdor to pose a few questions N3-Your team seemed to have three seasons this year. You started out like gangbusters then kind of struggled at the end of the regular before regrouping and playing some inspired football in the postseason run. What changed? Honestly, Holton does not have that storied past with football. We have had some good teams, but it is not something that happens here all of the time. We struggled on handling expectations and started to falter. We were a little banged up which didn't help as well. At the end of the regular season we were down and thinking we were out. When we figured out we were in the kids have really taken advantage of another chance to play. They are having fun and focusing on the right things at this point. N3-Successful teams have leaders emerge from the ranks. Any players stand out it this area for you? We have followed the likes of Aaron Herron and Derek Pouch for the entire season, but names like Draven Wyant and Kaleb Kitchka have emerged in the media as defensive stoppers, but our team rallies around each other. Other kids have really stepped up when needed like Ricky Enders, Drew Trygstad, and Nathan Slowik. The community energy has also helped lead this team. Our offensive and Defensive Line have taken it to heart that the games are won and lost by them in the trenches. It has really been an entire team effort. Even sophomore Austin Hawkins led us in rushing last week and set the edge defensively. N3-Reading is an offensive juggernaut piling up points all season. What do you know about them going in? What does your team need to do to move on? Reading has really beat up a lot of teams. They come out in lots of different formations so it makes it tough to prepare for. The look big up front and their backs run hard and fast. For us to be successful we need to continue to believe in ourselves, our team, and a win. If we continue to play the way we have the last three weeks, we can be very successful. N3-This is your last season at Holton and the team is going farther than any team in school history. How does it feel? I really have not taken time to reflect on what this team is doing because we have refocused each week on our new opponent. When it is all said in done here in the next two weeks, I might be able to answer that better. It has been all business for us each week since playoffs started and we like it that way. Our focus is on Reading and not what we have accomplished just yet. The other piece of this is what these kids have deserved and what this community deserved. It has been a long time coming for this place and has been my only goal and my families only goal is to give back to Holton. If anything we just want to continue to deliver. Saturday the Red Devils play perhaps the biggest game of football in school history with a shot at writing more history with a trip to Ford Field and a chance to play in front of a huge crowd as well as a television audience. I can’t think of a team more deserving. This scrappy squad has made quite the run and now they face a Reading team that has been blowing out opponents all year. Half of the dozen Raider wins have been shutouts. Their qb Alex Price can toss for some big plays and featured running back Ethan LoPresto can pile up yards and both benefit from strong line play, the same players who on defense are known as the Land Sharks. On paper Reading looks like a better team but they aren’t playing the game on paper. The Raiders want a title and knocked off Whiteford, the defending champs, before taking down the Jungaleers of Detroit Southeastern 54-0 last week. Holton might be happy to be here but it doesn’t stop there for the Devils. They have defied the odds all along the way and while it seems they would have to play a great game to have a shot at advancing to Detroit…. Nothing they do from here on out should be a surprise anymore. This team has some serious heart. On Holton! A magical season came to an end for the Panther Volleyballers when they fell to NorthPointe Christian in the regional semi-final. The Mustangs went on to take home the trophy by defeating North Muskegon in the finals
“We started out strong winning game 1, 25-19, then lost the next three 18-25, 10-25, 16-25.,” said Coach Monica Grimard. “Our offense was led by Alyssa Miller with 9 kills followed by Rachel Romero with 6, and both Bayle sisters adding 5 kills each. Aria Thomas and Kyra Sayer each had 12 assists. Emily Bayle and Miller had 10 and 9 digs respectively. Thomas had the only ace. “ The Panthers end their record breaking season with 36 wins, 17 losses, and 2 splits. “They crushed the school record wins in a season from 28 wins and reached their goal to be the first volleyball team in Panther History to put a banner on the wall for Volleyball, by winning the first District Volleyball Title in Hesperia’s History,” added Coach Grimard. “ It has been a great season with many memories made!"
