Holton 11 Frankfort 1
Holton 19 Onekama 2 In 2015 Holton blasted their way to the quarterfinals and defeated Coleman before falling in the semis to eventual champion Unionville Sebewaing The following year the Red Devils once again got past the Comets in the quarters and fell in the semis, this time to Indian Lakes. In 2017 Colemen returned the favor getting the win and a shot at the semifinals Then last year Frankfort stalled the Holton quest for the quarters knocking them out before losing in the round of 8 to...Coleman of course. This year the Devils were determined to return for another shot at playing in the final four so they dispatched the Eagles11-1 then cruised past the Portagers of Onekema 10-2 to take their game to Hope College where they will face a familiar foe. The Comets Kylie Gould whiffed 10 Eagles in the opener then fanned another 15 Portagers in the final to take both wins from the slab.Riley Legard ripped a trio of hits in the finals with Gould and Haylee Brant adding 2 each. Brant also recorded a pair of hits in the opener. Standish Sterling 9 Hesperia 0 The Panthers won the title but it was the Standish Sterling variety who will be moving on. Hesperiamanaged just a Becci Castillo hit while Caragan Frees reached base on an error and a walk. Those proved to be the only time the Panthers (Hesperia) were on the basepaths and combined with 7 errors on defense gave SS the win. “We ran into a real solid team today, Said Coach Bolles.”We were putting the ball in play, but we weren’t getting solid knocks.Their pitcher did a good job of keeping us off balance.” It’s tough to end the season this way, but I’m so proud of this group. We had a great run, we finished 22-15 on the season and 12-8 in the CSAA Silver which was a 3rd place finish. We also won a District Championship- the 3rd one in the last 29 years. “We are losing 6 quality seniors who we will miss, but on the bright side we have some quality underclassmen and our JV’s had a great season, so we’re disappointed today, but excited for the future of Hesperia Softball.”

Hesperia 13 Mason County Central 7 For the third time in a row during their tournament ride the Panthers pounded out a baker’s dozen runs to capture District honors and move on to Regional play. After defeating Shelby 13-0 and Hart 13-1 they made it a triskaidekaphilia sweep with the win over the Spartans in Manistee. Hesperia hitters have been hot in this postseason and the title game was no exception. They crossed the plate at least once in every inning including the 3 run rally in the opening frame that gave the Panthers a lead they would not relinquish despite the determination of the Spartan squad. Holding an 11-3 lead the Panthers saw a 5th inning rally by the MCC offense get them back within striking distance but the Hesperia hits kept coming and a couple of insurance runs were added while the defense held the Spartans in check for the rest of the contest. Coach Bolles: ““I never really felt safe with our lead but offensively we continued to put pressure on our opponents. We had timely hits today when we needed them and now we are district champs for only the 3rd time in 29 years.” Ellie Palmer who went the distance from the slab knocked in 4 teammates with 3 singles. Daelyn McKinnino and Lynsey Tinkham rapped out three hits apiece and Becci Castillo drove home a pair with a double and single. Total hits on the day for the Panthers? 13. Total times they struck out? Yep. 13. It will be Panther vs. Panther as Hesperia heads for Clare this weekend to face Standish-Sterling Saturday at high noon. The winner will face the survivor of McBain/Clare in a 2pm matchup. “We look forward to the challenge,” said Coach Bolles.”So proud of these girls. We’ve pushed them this year.We demanded a lot from them and they responded with a great effort down the stretch." TRACK & FIELD

Hesperia 13 Hart 1 Through two innings the Pirates had shut down the Panther offense and had registered 5 strikeouts, but the Panthers bats came to life as they knocked out sixteen hits over the next four innings to take command of the game and move on in tournament play. Ellie Palmer was on her game from the slab yielding just 4 hits and striking out 4. A solo shot by Skyler Smith accounted for the lone Pirate run. Palmer had it going with the bat as well doubling twice and adding 2 more singles as she sent 4 teammates across the plate.Caragan Frees scored three times and plated a pair with three hits and Becci Castillo went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Coach Bolles: “We really put together some quality at bats there in those middle innings, the girls waited for their pitch and had some really good at bats. Once we started to hit, everyone joined the hit parade, it was fun! Now we just need to bottle that up and bring the same mentality to the plate on Monday and we have an opportunity to reach one of our goals and that’s winning a district championship! Our work isn’t finished and we know whoever we face will be a challenge, but we feel we’re peaking at the right time”. The Panthers will play the winner of the 1pm semifinal between, Manistee and Mason County Central. Gametime is scheduled for 3pm D4 @ BR Crossroads Holton 11 White Cloud 1 On Saturday, the Lady Indians were hoping to carry the late season momentum of a win over Holton into the District semi-finals, only to find the Lady Red Devils with other plans. Holton scored in every inning except the 1st including 3 in the 4th and 4 in the 5th and 6th on the way to a 13 – 1 6 inning win. Allison Schulz had 2 hits and the lone RBI. White Cloud finishes their season at 16 – 13. Coach Scott Zerlaut: The girls tennis team finished the best season is school history yesterday at the Division 4 state Finals in Kalamazoo. Finishing with 10 points and an 11th place finish among the 23 teams that qualified for state. The ladies played their best tennis against many top seeded teams and represented Grant with class and pride. Olivia Keelean at 1S won her first match 6-0 6-0 over Frankenmuth. She then faced the #5 seed, battling the player from Grosse Ile, toe to toe, in an awesome display of power and shot making. Jada Zerlaut, at 2S, advanced to the quarter finals winning 6-0 6-1 over Chesaning. Her next match was vs the #1 seed from Grosse Ile. She showed her athleticism and court smarts winning 3 games in each set against the top player. The Tigers 3rd singles player, KirstynThroop, had the toughest draw, having to play the #4 seed from Royal Oak Shrine in her first match. Matching power for power and showing big serves and deft touch, she played almost every game to deuce, but couldn't quite pull off the upset. Sophomore, Emma Hetler, at 4 singles and the junior, sophomore duo of Kathryn Stong and Sydney Patin at 1 Doubles, both had to face Jackson Lumen Christi in their first matches and battled hard. Kaitlyn Pascoe and Liberty Pleune were seeded #4 at 3 Doubles and beat Saginaw Nouvel 6-0 6-0 in their first match before losing a tough battle to Monroe St Mary Catholic Central, losing the first set in a tiebreaker. Grant's 4 Dubs team of Elvira Cruz and Cecilia Ovalle, seeded #6 beat the team from Grosse Pointe Woods University of Liggett in their first match advancing to the quarter finals vs the #3 seed from Grosse Ile. The girls fought back in the second set winning 6-4, but couldn't secure the win in the third set. The Tigers last flight left playing was their #3 seeded 2 doubles team of seniors Jill Arends and Brooklyn Presler. The ladies beat Niles Brandywine first and then Portland second to advance to the semifinals. Playing in their third match of the day vs Traverse City St Francis, the girls came out strong winning the first set 6-4, but their opponents came back to level the match and the Tigers couldn't get back on track falling 6-4 in the third set. Great season ladies!!! |
