Fremont 53 Reed City 49 Morley Stanwood 55 Fremont 46 The Packers competed in the Reed City Holiday Tournament over the weekend splitting the action with a win over the host Coyotes in the semi final before falling to Morley in the title game. Taylor DeKuiper put together a triplicate with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals and Katie Ackerman finished with 5 assists and 7 rebounds. Bennett and Clemence each tallied 13 points while Eliana VandenBerk and Khaila Noordyk hit for 6 apiece, DeKuiper scored 4 and Grace Evans added 3. Holton Captures Tourney Title
Holton 50 White Cloud 12 The Red Devils are red hot. They rolled to the win in the title game of their first Annual Holiday Tournament and for the fourth straight time they won in a rout. The hosts took White Cloud out of the game early, holding them scoreless while piling on 19 points in the first period. By intermission the Devs were well in control at 33-5 Coach Jordan: “The message to the team was to come out with the needed intensity from the start, Every girl played in every quarter, which is something that might not always be the case but is good whenever you can have that opportunity. We had good balance again this game which is something I always want to have. We need to be able to score when teams try to take Robins away with a double. “Overall a good game and nice to win the championship at home for the inaugural event. We still have tons of room for improvement and we need to focus on that and not these last few lopsided wins, we know we have several tough challenges coming up starting with Shelby." Despite nursing an ankle injury Abbie Fowler dropped a dozen points, dished out 4 assists and snared 6 steals. Ryann Robins posted her 5th double double of the year with 15 points and 11 boards, while Layla Cannady and Aubrey Goyings knocked down 8 points apiece. Holton (5-1, 1-1) resumes conference play at home Thursday when they put their streak on the line in a matchup with Shelby (4-2, 2-1). White Cloud came out of the locker room and found their scoring touch going up 24-14 entering the 4th and holding back MCC for the win. Coach Wilk: “ Gracy Holmes and Annie Feldpausch led us with 9 points apiece. Brooke Ringler added 7 points, and she was all over the floor today. Overall our defense was sloppy, and our execution poor. If we want to win tomorrow we will need to play a much better game.” Holton 57 Big Rpids Crossroads Academy 36 The Cougars came into the tourney boasting a 4-0 record and the top spot in the West Michigan D League, but the Devils recent surge continued as they captured the win. Coach Jordan: “We were able to overcome a slow start and begin to pull away in the 2nd, credit to crossroads they absolutely outplayed us in the first quarter and really caught us off guard. "We went into halftime with a 29-19 lead, after giving up a late 3 in the half. The second half we were able to continue to grow our lead and we picked up our energy a little, not sure why it was off, maybe the noon start, but we were flat coming out … which is something we can’t afford to do. “Ryann Robins was a force down low and really was a steady force for us all game finishing with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Lexi Bart had another huge night for us hitting 3 3’s and finishing with 16 points and Abbie Fowler overcame an injury in the first half and finished with 8 assists. Aubrey Goyings also logged in a complete game and had 13 rebounds and 6 steals. “This win gets us to 4-1 on the season and we play White Cloud tomorrow in the championship and I expect them to come with great effort so we need to have a better start than we did today.” Boys

Coach Jones:”After a slow start we ended the first quarter up 14 to 11. The second quarter we turned up the defensive pressure and our offense found life outscoring Hesperia 18 to 9 to take a 32-20 lead. The third quarter we put the game away, outscoring Hesperia 18 to 1. Due to some injuries we only dressed nine tonight all nine players contributed to the victory. Jayden Robinson had a game High 14 pts Noah Robinson 12 Jared Watson 10 Kevin Strait 9 Jayson Ruether and Kaleb Canning 5 and David Higgs finished out the scoring with two points. White Cloud (5-2, 2-1) will take on Muskegon Catholic Central (1-6) at the Holton Holiday Tournament Thursday at 6pm. Mason County Central 55 White Cloud 10
The Spartans have rolled through the early part of their season including an emotional win Monday over cross county rival Ludington. On Thursday they welcomed in White Cloud and notched their 5th win in a row slamming the door on the defensive end and sending the visitors home with their 4th straight loss. Coach Wilk: “Tonight we struggled to put the ball in the hoop. MCC has a big rim protector in Wren Nelson, and she rejected a lot of our inside shots. They also were on fire in the 1st half. It seemed like every shot they took went in, and that made for a long night. We will look to get back on track when we play in the Holton Holiday Tournament. White Cloud (2-4, 1-2) will face Muskegon Catholic Central (1-3, 1-1) Thursday at 2pm. Wednesday Spring Lake 62 Grant 37 In a battle of the unbeatens the Lakers broke away in the second quarter and never looked back as they routed an undermanned visiting Tiger team. Coach Delamater: “We were without 6 players last night which really limited what we could do. I had to use the 5th quarter rule to have JV girls play with us to give us some depth. Overall, I thought we handled the situation well. The JV girls played hard and the five varsity girls played intense the whole time, regardless of the score. We had a decent first quarter, but Spring Lake shot the lights out in the second and third quarter making nine threes in that 16 minute stretch. Ashbaugh led us with 18 points and Natalia Rodriguez added 10.” Grant (4-1, 3-0)is back in action Friday as they face another undefeated team from the OK when they visit Cedar Springs (5-0). Tigers Sweep Lions, Cards Sweep Cloud, Pack Fall To Eagles
Girls Grant 40 Newaygo 19 The Tigers remained undefeated as they took a 22-9 lead at the half and kept control of the game in the second to post their 4th straight win. Lion Coach Thomasma: "Effort is there from the girls but we just have to continue to get better on the offensive end of the floor.” Despite the win Tiger Coach Delamater could see the need for improvement. “We did not play well on the offensive side of the ball tonight. We had too many unforced turnovers and looked out of place all night.” Julie Ashbaugh canned a game high 18 for Grant. Maria Riddering paced the Lions with 9 points, 5 boards and 5 steals. Newaygo drops to 2-3 (1-2) Grant improves to 4-0 (3-0) Big Rapids 59 White Cloud 18 The visiting Cardinals powered past the Cloud building a 21-7 lead after one and by intermission BR was up 18 points. Coach Wilk: “We had moments where we looked really good, and we have areas that we need to work on. To compete with the top teams in the area we need to play a full game, and that did not happen tonight.” Brooke Ringler led the hosts in scoring with 5 points and Gracy Holmes put together a strong game on both ends of the court. Boys Grant 73 Newaygo 66 When these schools meet in sporting competition you can count on a game filled with emotion and the desire to capture bragging rights in this rivalry for the ages. Tuesday’s game did not disappoint The Tigers jumped off to a 5 point lead after one and by the time intermission arrived the visitors increased their lead to 45-35.The Lions fought back in the third pulling to within three entering the final frame. The teams battled down the stretch but the Tigers hit the shots they needed to keep the Lions at bay and came away with a big conference win. Newaygo was led by Caris Nelson who knocked down 17 points while dishing 6 assists, Blake Kerr who hit for 12 points and gathered 8 rebounds, and Josiah Long who added 10 points. Zaiden Phillips led the Tigers with 21 points, followed by Lucas Swanon with 13. Oakley Obenauf, Blake Rider and Ethan DeLong chipped in 11 each. Oakridge 65 Fremont 51. After seeing their 6 game win streak snapped in a trip to Ludington, the Eagles got back on the winning track when they visited Fremont. The Packers are still looking to snap a losing streak that reached 5 in the conference loss to Oakridge. Coach Bowen: “.We got off to a good start and led by 3 going into halftime. The Eagles caught fire from beyond the arc in the second half and we were not able to make enough shots to keep up. We fought hard, and it was a much improved effort compared to our last game.” Gavin Richards paced the Pack with 16 points, Will DeBlake hit for 14 and Chaz Miller finished with an even dozen. Big Rapids 61 White Cloud 48 The two teams went back and forth in this rugged conference contest but the Cards caught fire in the 4th to pull out the win. Coach Jones: “Another great game for three and a half quarters and then we ran out of steam. Proud of how hard we played tonight but we just couldn't get anything to fall down the stretch.” By Ken De Laat High School Basketball will wrap up the early part of the season this week though all of our coverage teams except for Grant will play in some of the holiday games including the tourneys at Holton and Reed City. Been an interesting season already. Here’s a preview of the upcoming Tuesday games. Boys Grant at Newaygo Interesting early season matchup. The Lions are 5-2 going 5-0 against teams with a losing record and 0-2 against teams with a winning record. Grant has a winning record (4-2) but again, have yet to beat a team with a winning mark. The Tigers 4 game winning streak got decidedly halted by the visiting Coyotes who have routed each of their foes after a season opening loss to McBain, a team likely to sit high in the D3 rankings once they’re released. Nelson and Long are varsity veterans who know how to win and Klomp’s moves are ripe for highlight reels. Coach Long has depth and he uses it extensively, a strategy that has kept his team fresh down the stretch. Obenauf and Swanson are among the key players for the Tigers particularly on the offensive end. Rider, Hatch, DeLong and others give Coach Schuitema some nice options and a lot of weapons. Before getting beat by the Yotes they were averaging 70 a game. Other than an explosive offensive showing against the Hornets the Lions average about 60. Two teams wanting this one for the rivalry bragging rights to be sure, but Newaygo stays tied for the top with a win and Grant needs the win to stay close to the front runners. Game is at Newaygo which would be an advantage if this wasn’t Newaygo/Grant. Big Rapids at White Cloud Coach Jones’ team is a bit of an enigma. They handed Baldwin their only loss then the next game gave Shelby their only win. Since then they’ve won 3 in a row but none from that trio of opponents are likely to be contenders for any conference title. Can the Cloud compete in the blended CSAA conference? Maybe. But how they do in this one will give us a good idea if they can run with the league's best. The Cards aren't the team of the last few years but they’re pretty good. The Robinsons will need to fill it up with Strait and Watson at the ready should the Cards look to stifle Noah and Jayden. The Cards rained down 16 triples on Hart and while Haist is their primary sharpshooter they have a few who can it from outside. White Cloud is on their home court and they need to have a really good game if they hope to send BR home unhappy. Oakridge at Fremont. The Packers haven’t been blown out but they haven’t won since an opening victory over Shelby who are resting on the bottom of the WMC at this early juncture of the season. Miller, DeKuyper and DeBlake are just a few of the players who can get hot and the Packers are going to need some players to heat up if they are to clip the Eagles. Girls Grant at Newaygo Coach Delamater has some varsity veterans led by Ashbaugh and Pleune and transfer (from Newaygo) Welch is a key addition to this talented team while Rodriguez and Gragg add depth. This will be a week that should shed some light on how good the Tigers might be. After their Tuesday game in Newaygo they face Spring Lake the next day and Cedar Springs on Friday. Three road games in a week with 2 against undefeated teams from strong OK divisions. Newaygo has lost 2 in a row and if they start as cold as they have in those two losses the Tigers will run away from them.. The Lions struggle with getting the ball to fall. Westbrook and Schillman can heat up as they showed in the comeback over the Hornets, Lathrup has a good eye from distance and Holmes has shown flashes of becoming a very good player. Still, Grant has more shooters, more varsity experience and whoever draws Pleune as a defender is in for a long night. The Lions would need to put forward their best game to keep this one close. Big Rapids at White Cloud The Cardinals have struggled out of the gate finally posting a win over a less than stellar Comstock Park squad after 3 losses. However, they hung in with a very good Cedar team and finally got some consistent offense against Park. White Cloud needs to score with more consistency. They fell short against a good Shelby team but in their last game, a loss to the Hornets, they fell out of contention early due to anemic shooting. Gomez, Ringler, Holmes, Klammer,... someone needs to get hot early in this one and help the team stick with the Cards long enough to have a shot at the end. Photos by Bobbi Cruzan Kent City 32 Newaygo 22 The Eagles have been known to test their teams early in the season and this year has been no exception.A pair of D1 teams followed by the always tough West Michigan Christian resulted in KC taking 2 out of 3 losing a tight season opener to undefeated Kenowa Hills of the OK Gold a division filled with talented teams. Just ask Newaygo. The Lions traveled to OK Gold Cedar Springs earlier this week and ran into a red hot Red Hawk squad who took over both ends of the floor and delivered them their first loss. On Friday the two teams met on the Eagle home court and the hosts took advantage of a big early lead to capture the conference win. A cold start put the Lions in a 13-2 hole after the first quarter. From there they hung around before making a couple of 4th quarter runs that brought them within 6 at one point, but the Eagles were able to contain the Lions down the stretch and hold home court. Coach Thomasma: ”Overall, the energy and execution was much better than it was against Cedar Springs on Tuesday but we have to figure out a way to settle into games quicker. We're digging too big of a hole early in games and it's difficult to come back and beat a quality team like Kent City. We just need to continue to work hard in practice to get better.” Kija Schultz and Lillian Holmes each hit for 6 points with Holmes adding a half dozen boards and Schultz grabbing 3 steals. Maria Riddering snared 5 steals to go with her 3 points and Amaya Lathrop matched her 4 points with 4 steals. Newaygo (1-1, 2-1) will host Grant (2-0, 3-0) on Tuesday. Fremont 42 Montague 34 The Packers rolled through most of the game building an early lead behind their pressure defense and hitting halftime with a 19 point edge. Up by as many as 22 in the final frame, a furious late run by the Wildcats shaved 14 points off that lead but it proved too little too late and the visiting Pack notched their second straight win. Coach Zerfas: “ I thought we came out with great energy and forced the pace to be fast. Our rotations are getting better each time we play and you can see the team chemistry is building day by day. I just love how hard this group works in practice and games and it is beginning to show positive results.” Mia Clemence knocked down 14 points to pace the Packer scoring followed by Jessica Bennett who hit for 13. Bennett and Clemence each collected 5 rebounds while Olivia Hansen worked the glass for a team high 9 boards. Taylor DeKuiper took down 7 rebounds, adding 3 steals while Grace Davis scored 6 and Riley Chase added 5 points to her half dozen steals. Next up for Fremont (2-0, 2-1) is the Reed City Holiday Tournament opening round on Friday December 29th They will face the host Coyotes in a 3pm game. Grant 48 Reed City 46 The Tigers made it 3 in a row holding back a late Coyote attack to capture the conference win. Coach Delamater: “We knew going into this game that it was going to be a battle. Reed City is young and athletic and is a contender at the top of the conference. We did a really good job dealing with their pressure in the first quarter and shot the ball well despite our leading scorer, senior Julie Ashbaugh, being forced to the bench by two quick fouls. Both teams tightened up the defense in the second, and even with a ten point lead going into half, I knew we were going to face a strong Reed City push in the second half. The third quarter was dead even and we started the 4th on a run to push the lead to 15. But, basketball is a game of runs and Reed City turned up the pressure forcing us into 5 straight possessions with a turnover and cut the lead to 5. With us up by 1 with under 15 seconds to go, senior Bella Welch made a free throw to put us up 2. On the ensuing Reed City possession she got a steal but missed a layup and Reed City got possession of the ball. On the inbound, junior Reese Gragg played great defense and tipped the ball inbounds pass to seal the game for us. “Bella led us with 14 points on the night and senior Natalia Rodriguez had an outstanding game with 11. On the defensive side of the ball junior Jocee Pleune and Welch continue to be dynamic in their full court defense. The two of them are the catalyst for everything we do defensively. “This was a must win for us if we want to be at the top of the conference. We focused on boxing out all week and I thought we did much better tonight. Defensively, we were solid, but offensively we have lots to work on.” Grant (2-0, 3-0) will travel to Newaygo (1-1, 2-1) Tuesday, one of 3 games the Tigers play this coming week. Central Montcalm 52 White Cloud 25 The Hornets held home hive with a convincing win over the Cloud Friday night. The visitors kept it close early finishing the first quarter down just 12-9 but turnovers plagued them going forward and CM ran to the conference win. Coach Wilk: “ We will get back in the gym and try to clean up our mistakes before our next game. Luckily it is the weekend because a few of us are under the weather, and we are hoping that with enough rest we will be ready for Big Rapids. Annie Feldpausch scored 6 points to lead the team while Jaden Gomez and Tanayah Klammer each hit for 5. White Cloud (1-1, 2-2) will host Big Rapids (0-1, 1-3) on Tuesday. Holton 69 Fruitport CC 17 The Red Devils routed the Eagles as they piled up 25 first quarter points to build a 20 point lead Abbie Fowler accounted for 15 of those points, part off her game high 19 on the night. Coach Jordan: “ Just like last game the goal was to play a complete game on the defensive end and as a team we took care of business. Many girls contributed and Lexi Bart continues to step up for us on the offensive end as she scored another 14 points tonight. Aubrey Goyings had another great statistical night again with 5 points 11 rebounds and 5 steals and Ryann Robins was her typical self with another double double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Layla Cannady also chipped in 10 points.” In addition to her 19 points Fowler collected 4 steals and dished out a 6 pack of assists. Holton (1-1, 3-1) will be back in action when they kick off their Holiday Tournament on Thursday the 28th, taking on Muskegon Heights at noon. White Cloud 72 Central Montcalm 70 (OT) The visiting Cloud team outlasted the host Hornets to come away with the conference win and extend their winning streak to 3. Coach Jones: “Not one of our best games on either side of the floor but we showed a lot of heart tonight and probably stole one.” Noah Robinson dropped a game high 21 points on the Hornets with Jayden Robinson popping in 17, and KJ Strait hitting for 16. Jared Watson (8), Jayson Reuther (6) and Mason Cruzan (4) rounded out the scoring for the team. White Cloud (2-0, 4-1) will host Big Rapids (1-1, 4-2) on Tuesday. Reed City 67 Grant 49 The Coyotes look to be a prime factor in the conference race as they rolled past the Tigers to capture their 4th straight win in convincing fashion. With the game tied at 10 after one, the visitors edged to a 6 point lead at intermission then outscored the Tigers 19-9 in the third to take command of the game. Zaiden Phillips led the hosts in scoring with 8 points followed by Kyle Cook and Ethan DeLong who finished with 7 apiece. Grant (2-1, 4-2) will meander up M-37 Tuesday to face forever rival Newaygo (3-0, 5-2) Newaygo 60 Kent City 54 A back and forth game between these two rivals saw the Lions close out the win in the conference matchup and run their winning streak to 3. Newaygo was led by Blake Kerr with 19 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Caris Nelson with 15 points and 6 assists, and Logan Klomp with 11 points. Jarryn Schmitt pulled down 7 rebounds and Ethan Reyburn had 4 steals. Newaygo (3-0, 5-2) hosts Grant (2-1, 4-2) on Tuesday. Thursday Fruitport 49 Fremont 38 The visiting Trojans built a 26-18 lead by intermission and held back the Pack to secure the win and send the hosts to their 4th straight loss. Coach Bpwen: “We struggled to make shots again. We just have not been able to generate enough offense to win games so far this year. Our defense overall was pretty good, but you’re not going to win many games when you score 38 points. We will continue to work hard to get better.” Chaz Miller fired in 14 points to lead the pack with Ben Mellema hitting for 10. Fremont (0-2, 1-4) returns to conference play Tuesday when they welcome in Oakridge (2-1, 6-1). Boys Big Rapids 54 Fremont 51 When the Packers were in the CSAA their matchups with the Cardinals produced some classic battles and more often than not weighed heavily in the conference title race. Tuesday’s game, while no longer a factor in the league standings, was once again a close hard fought battle with this one going to the Cards. Coach Bowen: “We played hard, but struggled against their pressure in the second half. It was the same story Friday against Ludington. Too many turnovers and we missed a lot of easy shots at the basket. We will continue to work hard to improve.” Chaz Miller paced the Packer scoring with 19 points while Kyler DeKuiper knocked down 15. Ben Mellema and Gavin Richards finished with 5 each. Fremont (0-2, 1-3) will host Fruitport (1-2) on Thursday. Newaygo 67 OV 58 The Lions were able to shrug off a slow start and build a 9 point lead that they carried to the end of the game. Newaygo was led by Blake Kerr with 18 points, followed by Logan Klomp with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Josiah Long with 14 points, and Caris Nelson with 13 points and 6 assists. Newaygo (2-0, 4-2) returns to conference play Friday when they visit Kent City (1-0, 1-3) to take on the Eagles. Grant 79 Shelby 34 In a game that featured a Tiger vs. Tiger matchup the Grant Tigers held home court decisively as they ran away from the visitors from Shelby building a 12 point lead after one and hitting halftime up by 17.It was the 4th straight win for the hosts after a season opening loss to Ludington. Nine players scored with three players in double figures led by Oakley Obenauf who knocked down 18 points while Lucas Swanson hit for 17 and Sincere Hatch dropped 11. Ethan DeLong and Blake Rider each scored 8 in the Tiger vis=ctory. Grant (2-0, 4-1) returns to conference play Friday when they welcome in Reed City (2-0, 3-1) Girls Cedar Springs 52 Newaygo 18 The Lions ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday when they took a trip to Cedar Springs to face the Red Hawks. The hosts took control early holding the Lions to just 7 first half points while putting up 27. The second half was more of the same as the visitors continued to struggle getting the ball in the basket. Coach Thomasma: "Tonight, Cedar Springs played a very good ball game. They shot the ball and defended very well. They also were able to get to a lot of loose balls. All the credit to them. On our end, it was definitely a "burn the film" type of game. We know we didn't play our best but I am confident that this group will put it behind them, regroup and work to improve in areas that were exposed tonight" Naomi Schillman led the Lions with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Maria Riddering had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Addison Goodin and Lily Holmes finished with 6 rebounds apiece. Newaygo (1-0, 2-1) will hit the road again Friday when they visit Kent City (0-0, 1-1) to face the Eagles.. Fremont 39 Oakridge 18 The Packers slapped one into the win column as they broke out of a first quarter tie to blank the Eagles in the second quarter and take control of the game. Coach Zerfas: “We survived a cold shooting night with great team defense tonight to earn our first win. It was the first time we have beaten Oakridge dating back over 20 years. The first quarter both teams had a hard time scoring and it was 5-5 after one. We really stepped up the intensity of our defense and outscored Oakridge 10-0 in the second quarter. The third quarter was again a struggle to find the basket and we led 21-13 heading into the 4th where we outscored Oakridge 18-5 to win the ballgame 39-18. Overall we only shot 3-21 from 3pt land and 14-51 overall, but we had 9 different girls score. Early on we turned the ball over and didn't rebound well but in the second quarter we didn't allow a single second chance point off rebounds and were able to extend our lead.” Freshman Taylor DeKuiper had a breakout game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 8 steals while Mia Clemence collected 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Also scoring were Eliana VandenBerg with 5, Khaila Noordyk and Riley Chase with 4 apiece, Olivia Hansen with 3, Jessica Bennett with 2 and Hallie Snyder and Katie Ackerman both with 1. Fremont (1-0, 1-1) will travel to Montague (1-1, 1-2) on Friday to face the Wildcats. Holton 53 Hesperia 4 The Panthers were clearly overmatched in this rivalry game as the Red Devils held them scoreless in the first quarter and allowed just 4 points on the night. Coach Jordan: “Our press was able to give them problems in the first quarter and we got out to a 24-0 lead, and put it away early. The message was that it isn't about how many we score, but how many we give up and whether we play with the same defensive intensity when we're not pressing up big late in the game. It's easy to coast on D when you’re up big, I thought we did a decent job of keeping our intensity up the entire game. Many girls contributed for us and almost everyone got in the scores book which is always nice. “Always good to follow up a loss with a win, against your rival or not. We were also playing for the traveling trophy “Battle of M120”. We need to build off of this and continue on Friday with Fruitport Calvary.” Three RD’s finished in double figures led by Lexi Bart who hit for 13 points. Aubrey Goyings scored 12 points while taking down11 rebounds and added 3 steals while Abbie Fowler also dropped a dozen adding 3 assists and 3 steals. Ryann Robins dished out 6 assists to go with her 11 boards and Alexis Nichols knocked down 5 points. Holton (1-1, 2-1) will host Fruitport CC (0-3) on Friday. |
