Lions Grapplers Take On Eagles, Wildcats
Newaygo hosted Lakeview and Kent City in their first CSAA Tri of the season. This would also be the only home meet for Newaygo, so it was senior night as well. Senior Luke Acton started off the night with a pin, followed by senior Gavin Culver winning by pin. Trayton Kooistra and Aaron Garza brought in 6 points each for the team by forfeit making the score 24-0 at the time. Kent City caught right up with the Lions through forfeit. Senior Will Berenbrock brought back the excitement with a pin in his weight class! And Senior Brett Wismar ended the night with a nail biting match at 157 lbs, but ultimately falling short, bringing the final score to Kent City 51 to Newaygo 30. The two exhibition matches against Kent City included sophomore Brock Wismar, who kept the crowd on its toes and earned a pin with 0.8 seconds left! Sophomore Sam Eager took his opponent into OT, but came up just short of the win. Senior Will Berenbrock announced this night his plans to continue his wrestling and education career with Cornerstone University! After a very long match-up between Kent City and Lakeview, Newaygo prepared to take on the strong contingent of wrestlers from Lakeview. Pulling in wins were Kopp, Berenbrock and Brett Wismar (Kopp + Wismar by Pin and Berenbrock by decision 6-2). Cade Gerke, Brock Wismar and Sam Eager were able to participate in exhibition matches with the Wildcats and both Gerke and Wismar pulled in wins (Wismar by pin)!
