Joe Berger Camp 2018
By Alexis Mercer On Tuesday, June 26, 2018, 280 young athletes gathered at Newaygo High School’s football field to partake in a day of activity for the 5th Annual Joe Berger Camp. The grey t-shirts each camp participant wore was profoundly sentimental, stating “Welcome Home” on the front. On the back each team Berger played for throughout his accomplished career was listed, and at the end “Home 2018 Always a Lion.” Berger, by far the tallest man on the field, spoke to the excited athletes and their parents at the beginning of the morning, telling them he was looking forward to the day to be active and enjoy the opportunity to run and play. The camp was once again free for all participants, including the t-shirt, lunch, and prizes at the end of the day. Athletes were organized into groups based mostly on age, and proceeded to spend the day circling through stations that included not only football related drills, but also stations just meant to get kids active and moving! One of the highlights for the younger set of kids was getting to play Duck-Duck-Goose with Berger. He laughed as he was trying to get back into the circle without smushing the kindergarten age kids lunging at him! While the media had ample opportunities to talk to Berger throughout the day, including several television news stations, the questions the kids asked near the end of the day seemed most appropriate for recording, since he was so graciously giving his time to them for the day. Q: “Can you bring more NFL players next year?” A: I can see if I can do that. I tried, but it’s hard because they all just got done with their training camp. I’ll tell Mr. Sirles you missed him (Berger’s fellow lineman at Minnesota who came to last year’s camp). Q: “How many touchdowns did you score?” A: None. I’m a lineman, so it isn’t really something I try to do. But I almost fell on a fumble once. I feel like that counts for something. Q: “Did you ever play quarterback?” A: No. I throw the ball terrible. My job is to protect the QB. Q: “Who was the best on your team?” A: Last year? We had so many great players. Offensively I would have to say Case Keenum. Q: “What about you? Weren’t you the best?” A: No, I think that would be weird to say you’re the best. Q: “How many teams did you play for?” A: Isn’t it on the back of the shirt? (Laughing) I have no idea. 8? [Someone yells out 7] I think Newaygo Rocket Football should count as one, so we will say it’s officially 8. To end the day, campers all gathered together to listen for who won prizes. The tables were full of camp footballs, a television (the only thing given away that didn’t promote an active lifestyle), yard games, gloves worn by Berger in NFL games, and the grand prize: an authentic Minnesota Vikings Berger jersey. Berger then sat by the victory bell on the field and patiently signed pictures, shirts, hats, even shoes of the campers and posed for pictures with the kids who were perfectly worn out and happy from a day full of fun.

White Cloud Newaygo battled their way past Central Montcalm then blasted past Lakeview to claim the District Crown Saturday. Newaygo 5 Central Montcalm 1 “Central Montcalm’s pitcher had really good command of his secondary pitches and it gave us some problems the first time through the batting order. Our guys do a great job talking amongst themselves on what a pitcher is doing and what they see coming from the pitcher and were able to adjust.” While the Lions were figuring things out in the batters box, Jarred Heideman was tossing a gem from the mound limiting the Hornets to a lone run and just 3 hits while setting down a dozen on strikes. Jarred had some of his best stuff on the mound this year,”added Coach Bomay.”He was dominating Central’s batters.” Newaygo 14 Lakeview 2 That left just the Wildcats of Lakeview standing in the way of moving on to Regional play and the Lions left no margin for error with a 10 run 5th inning propelling them to the win.The offensive firepower display was led by Brandon Sekach, Noah Cantu, Conner Swinehart, Noah Graff, Andrew Goodin, and Nick Simington, all driving in runs in the frame. Swinehart earned the victory on the mound for Newaygo, going five innings, and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three. “We had a great week of practice and the guys were all business today,” said Coach Bomay. “ We got production out of the bottom of our lineup today and they were very instrumental to our success” “The guys are not content with just a district title. We set goals at the beginning of the year and they are working hard to hopefully attain them.” “This has been a fun bunch to coach,” he added. The Lions will begin Regional play by facing the Mustangs of Northpointe Christian at noon on Saturday June 9th. The game will be played at Kent City High School. White Cloud beganSaturday in the District semi-final game against Big Rapids Crossroads and with a sluggish start, trailed 4 – 1. A 7 run 3rd put WC in the lead for good en-route to a 14 – 4 6 inning win. Jordan Bulk had her biggest day at the plate of the season racking up 4 hits with a double and a triple and 4 RBI’s, Madeleine Seabrook had a bases loaded double and 3 RBI’s while Allison Schulz had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI’s. Kara Davis got the win striking out 5. In the finals against Holton the girls managed only 2 hits, a double by Hannah Brown and a single by Elexis Plotts and fell by a score of 4 – 1. “We were hanging in there thru 3, down only 1 – 0 and tied it in the top of the 4th, only to have them answer with a run in their half of the inning, and get 2 more in the bottom of the 5th,” said Coach Don Barnhard “ It was closer than we had been with them throughout the year, but we weren’t playing horseshoes.” White Cloud finishes the season with an 18-10 mark. Several area athletes competed at the MHSAA Track and Field State Finals Saturday These competitions that toss together the very best of each event in each division and those who qualified moved into the finals.
Here are their results. In Division 2 Packer Ben Schmidt put the cap on a sterling high school career with a 10th place finish in the 3200 ( 9:33.6) followed by teammate Nathan Walker (9:37.98) who placed 12th. Fredmont’s Hannah Hamilton grabbed an 11th place spot with a run of 11:32.75 then joined teammates Kendra Fowler, Riley Sweet and Katie Nicolas to finish 14th in the 4x800 relay (10:01.18).
