Lions Muzzle Dogs Newaygo 32 Ravenna 17 Ravenna got on the board first but Amaya Lathrop and Kija Schultz hit buckets and Naomi Schillman drilled one from beyond the arch to stake the Lions to an early lead. The Bulldogs followed with a 2 pointer by Mattisen Crowley and the first quarter ended with the hosts up 7-5. It would be the last points scored by the Dogs until a few minutes into the third period when Addison Gillard put an end to an 8-0 run by the Lions. By the time the teams entered the final frame the hosts held a 22-10 advantage. Ravenna scored to open the fourth but Newaygo responded as Schultz scored, Lillian Holmes hit for 2 in a row, Lathrop canned one and Riddering wove into the lane for 2 and the Lions took control and captured their second straight win. Coach Thomasma: "Good game for us coming out of Christmas Break. Thought the girls played really hard. It's never easy coming out of break and the girls showed up. We just have to continue working on our execution and finishing on the offensive end.”
Amaya Lathrop led the Lions with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Lillian Holmes rejected 5 Bulldog shots while adding 7 points and 7 rebounds and Maria Riddering finished with 6 points, 5 steals and 5 deflections. Newaygo (4-3, 1-2) will travel to Morley Stanwood (7-1, 4-0) Friday to face the league leading ‘Hawks.
