Photos by Bobbie Cruzan White Cloud 55 Baldwin 42 Despite losing prolific scorer Camelo Lindsey to graduation the Panthers brought a lot of talent from last years’ conference and district champion team into the season opener. The Cloud was also coming off a successful season that included a lopsided loss to Baldwin. Coach Jones: “We opened with a win against a team that worked us over pretty good last year. "We definitely have a lot of stuff to clean up but pretty happy with our defense and hustle. Offensively we are not even close to our potential but we will get better." Jared Watson has a game High 14 points , Kevin Strait and Jayden Robinson knocked down 13 apiece. Noah Robinson was a beast in the paint rejecting 5 Panther attempts while dropping 10 points. “Landyn McGowan, Jason Ruether, Coleson Cruzan, Kaleb Canning, Mason Cruzan and Jacob Zimmer all gave us valuable minutes in a variety of ways,” added Coach Jones. White Cloud (1-0) will head west to take on Shelby Friday. Ludington 82 Grant 57 The visiting Tigers opened the 2023-24 campaign at Ludington with a tough 57-82 loss. Leading 20-10 at the end of the 1st quarter and tied at 33 at half, it appeared to be a great game. The teams went back and forth until the 2:00 mark of the 3rd quarter with the Tigers up 42-40. The hosts converted on lay-ups and 3's the rest of the game outscoring the Tigers 15-42 to finish the game. Oriole Guard David Schillinger was on fire for the hosts dropping 40 points Lucas Swanson led the team in scoring with 19, followed by Oakley Obenauf with 11 and Zaiden Phillips with 9. Grant (0-1) Begins conference play with their home opener against Morley Stanwood Friday.

One In The Books Photos by Alexis Mercer Story by Ken De Laat Newaygo 57 Comstock Park 43 The Lions came out hot on both ends of the court dropping 18 first quarter points while limiting the Panthers to a trio of long distance makes on defense. The second quarter was more of the same and featured a pair of hail mary passes that Caris Nelson sent downcout to Logan Klomp who converted the layups. By the time the dust had cleared the teams went to the locker rooms with the hosts holding a solid 33-16 lead. But Park wasn’t done. After Josiah Long and Blake Kerr exchanged buckets with the visitors the Panthers went on a 12-2 run to pull them within 8 points. Coach Long called a timeout to regroup his team. The strategy worked with the Lions closing the quarter as Nelson hit a 2 and Klomp did the same adding a free throw to send the Lion lead to 44-31 entering the final frame. Russell Toth opened the scoring for Newaygo and Park responded with a bucket then got a stop. Nelson snared a rebound on the Panther end of the court and once again let one go full court to Klomp who converted. On the next Panther possession Nelson stole the ball at half court and drove in for 2 to jump the lead to 52-36 and ice the game.
Nelson finished with 21 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds, Klomp hit for 13 and pulled down 7 off the glass and Long finished with 9 points also grabbing 7 boards. Jarryn Schmitt and Blake Kerr each added 4. "This was a solid team effort,” said Coach Long, who showed a lot of confidence in his team, going deep into his bench early and often. Newaygo (1-0) hits the road for the next three games beginning with a trip to Oakridge Wednesday and then traveling to Remus to face Chip Hills Thursday. The basketball season is underway and we contacted area coaches for a little peek into what their teams look like this season. Newaygo opened Monday with a win over Comstock Park and Grant traveled to Ludington and fell short against a tough Oriole squad. On Tuesday Fremont is scheduled to open with a road game at Shelby and White Cloud will host Baldwin.
