Wrestling On Monday January 8th Grant hosted Fremont for a single dual towards the Newaygo County Championship. The match went back and forth with each team holding multiple leads, the Tigers got pins from Cameron Espinoza (120 lbs), Kashton Atwood (126 lbs), Alex Russo (132lbs) and Max Heitzman (165 lbs). Evan Clouser (285lbs) and Eddie Beight (138 lbs) also came away with victories. After a pin for Fremont at 175lbs and a double forfeit at 190lbs, the match was tied at 33-33, with senior Hunter Crosby coming up. Hunter pinned his Packer opponent in the 2nd period to win it for Grant. The Tigers wrestle at Lakeview this coming weekend in an individual tournament. Basketball Fremont 45 Whitehall 28 Coach Zerfas: “We were able to get a tough league win on the road at Whitehall 45-28. It was a grind as we did not shoot well (13-57) and came out slow again only scoring 6 points in the first quarter. It was tied 6-6 after one. Our defense played well and we were able to take a 21-15 lead into halftime and extend the lead to 33-20 after 3 quarters. Mia Clemence had 14 points and 7 steals. Jessica Bennett had 10 points, 9 blocks and 7 rebounds. Riley Chase had 8 points and 5 steals, Taylor DeKuiper had another all around game with 6 points 8 rebounds and 8 steals. Katie Ackerman had 3 points and 5 assists and both Eliana VandenBerg and Khaila Noordyk had 2 points. We are 6-2, 4-0 in league. Our next game is Friday at Manistee. Bowling The Packers boys had an away match against Holton at Northway lanes. They started out strong with a nice 182 Baker game of 182, but Holton kept it close throwing a 181. The boys would win the next Baker games and take all 10 of the Baker point's. Holton would come back hard throwing games of 886 and a nice 935. Holton would win a close match 17 - 13. The Fremont boys were led by Kaden Johnson with a 232 game, Owen Hertel had a 191 and Gavin Payne added a 176. The Fremont girls had an away match today against Holton at Northway lanes. They started out good with 147 Baker games but then threw a 104. They split the Baker games and took 4 out of the 10 points possible. They get back to bowing better with team regular games of 672 and 691. They would win both games and the match 22 - 8. The team was led by Sophia Romine with games of 170 and 151 and Annika Yuhasz added a 149.
