MS takes the title while Tigers, Eagles, Coyotes tie for 2nd
Morley Stanwood 64 Grant 57 Coaches and teams prepare for each game as it comes, striving to keep themselves and their players from looking ahead on the schedule. But this one has been on the radar for awhile. Early on, the regular season finale for the Grant and Morley teams seemed destined to be a big one. When the ‘Hawks lost to Big Rapids earlier this month it gave the Tigers a one game edge that was erased when the surging Kent City squad knocked them back into a tie for the top spot. Friday the teams met with it all on the line in a battle that, of course, took them into overtime. When the final buzzer sounded it was the MS team left standing as conference champs, coming back in dramatic fashion to earn the hard fought victory. Behind a dozen first half points by Julie Ashbaugh and 11 by Natalia Rodriguez the Tigers built a 32-23 lead at intermission and pushed the lead to 16 with Alexa Obenauf and Reece Gragg hitting threes. Foul trouble began to plague Grant. Coach Delamater: "We got our third foul on four of our key players, two of which, Reece Gragg and Emma Thompson, took away our inside presence and we were forced to go zone to stop them from pounding it inside.” That was when Morjey sharpshooter Lynsey Biller gunned her team back into the game, scorching three triples in a row and the visitors began to inch closer to the Tigers. By the time the teams entered the final 8 minutes the Tigers were clinging to a 2 point lead. Jocee Pleune hit a pair from distance for Grant in the 4th but with 10 seconds left Mackenna Martin scored the tying bucket off a free throw rebound to send the game into overtime. It was all ‘Hawks in the extra frame, scoring early on the Tigers early then hitting the needed foul shots to ice the game and lay claim to the title. Coach D.: "Another bitter loss for us. We battled all game and fought a ton of adversity throughout the night. We knew coming out at half that they were going to make a run at us. We've talked about little things all season and they were the difference in the game tonight. On top of that, we have to respond better to physical play. Morley's comeback was a result of how physical the game got. We are not a big physical team. Our guards, night in and night out, get pushed around. If you look at all five of our losses this season, physical play is a major factor and we have to be more prepared for that. I am extremely proud of our girls. They played a great game but came up short. Now it's time to get ready for a district push." Ashbaugh led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points, Rodriguez finished with 12 and Bella Welch hit for 11. Biller finished with 26 for MS. Newaygo 54 Chippewa HIlls 22 The Lions wrapped up their regular season on a high note as they charged to an early lead and never looked back in their road win over the Warriors. Coach Thomasma: "The team played a pretty complete game tonight up in Chippewa Hills. We got into some early foul trouble which put some pressure on our rotations. Amaya (Lathrop) made some big buckets for us to keep us going offensively. I thought as the game went on, we were able to dictate the tempo on both ends of the court. The girls finished the season pretty strong (7-3 in the last 10) which moved us up in the conference. We will see who we play next week once the MPR's scores come out.” Lathrop led the Lions with 17 points (13 in the first half), 7 steals and 2 assists. Addison Goodin added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals. Ruby Hughes had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

Asbaugh knocks down 32 on Senior Night
Grant 71 Whitehall 44 On a night honoring the seniors on the team as well as celebrating Julie Ashbaugh’s school scoring record, the senior left no doubt as to how she set the new mark. A career high 32 point performance including 14 in the first quarter helped propel the Tigers past the Vikings for the non conference win. Natalia Rodriguez (11) Bella Welch (10) also reached double figures. Coach Delamater: “With all of the emotions surrounding the game, the girls buckled down and played a great basketball game. Julie was exceptional tonight, breaking her career high. Defensively, everyone did a great job of rotating and keeping the Whitehall players in check. A special thanks for the hard work and determination from our seniors Julie Horning, Bella Welch, Natalia Rodriguez, and Julie Ashbaugh.” Now the Tigers can focus on the much anticipated title match with Morley Stanwood on Friday. The teams are deadlocked at 8-1 in conference play making the game a winner-take-all contest Newaygo 48 Shelby 41 Newaygo led 29-21 at half, 35-30 after the 3rd and were able to pull away from the Tigers in the 4th quarter to secure the win. Coach Thomasma:"Good bounce back win for the girls after a tough loss last night. We shot the ball well and played good defense. Ruby Hughes stepped up and filled in and played a great game for us. Rebounded really well. I thought Elsha hit some big buckets early in the game to get our confidence going. Shelby also played really tough. They had some injuries but really battled against us. Happy to get the victory on Senior Night.” Amaya Lathrop led the Lions with 13 points, 5 steals and 3 assists. Ruby Hughes had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Naomi Schillman had 9 points and Elsha Jibson had 7 big first half points. Newaygo (10-9, 3-6) wraps up their conference play Friday when they visit Chippewa Hills. Monday Muskegon Oakridge 46 Newaygo 38 Newaygo led by 5 going into the 4th quarter but Oakridge outscored the Lions 21-8 in the final frame to take the victory. Coach Thomasma:"The game tonight came down FT's and missed layups. We were 5-13 from the line, they were 13-20. Credit to them. They made the shots in the 4th quarter to win the game." Amaya Lathrop led the LIons with 12 points, 5 steals and 3 assists. Addison Goodin had 6 points and 10 rebounds. Naomi Schillman chipped in 6 points. Reed City 60 Grant 41 Big Rapids 53 White Cloud 48 (OT) Monday’s CSAA Tourney featured a pair of much anticipated rematches in the top tier. Both Grant and White Cloud were seeking to avenge losses earlier in the season, but both would have to accomplish this by playing in the less than welcoming environments high school gyms seem to amplify this time of year. Grant was facing a Reed City team that had run through their conference schedule undefeated and only 2 teams came within double figures of the Coyotes. The game played out eerily similar to their first matchup. The tema were close until the second half when Reed City pulled away for the win. As they have all seasons the Coyote defense rose to the occasion holding the Tigers to just 12 points after the break. Lucas Swanson and Zaiden Phillips led the team in scoring with 7 each. Blake Rider added 6 and Ethan DeLong chipped in 5. Meanwhile, just south of that game in Big Rapids the Cloud looked like they were going to have another shot at the Yotes as they battled to an 18-13 lead at halftime, pushed the lead to 9 entering the final frame and led by as much as 11 with 6 minutes left. But the Cardinal sharpshooters got hot and began raining the 3 pointers while the visitors were struggling to score. With the game knotted at 42 the Cloud held out for a winning shot but the game ended going into overtime where a quick Cardinal lead and some hot shooting from the charity stripe iced the game for the Cards. Coach Jones: “ This one will sting for a long time. We battled our butts off, but we couldn't hold the lead and let BR back into the game down the stretch in the fourth quarter. “We have to get right back at on Wednesday night when we host Grant.” KJ Strait paced the Cloud scoring attack with a dozen points, while Jared Watson hit for 11, Noah Robinson collected 10, and Jayson Ruether finished with 9. Grant (8-2, 13-6) @ White Cloud (8-2, 16-5) 7pm. JV game at 5:30pm Newaygo 58 Chippewa Hills 48 The Lions barely missed getting into the top tier playoff but they began their quest for taking home honors in their group with a hard fought win over the Warriors. The game went back and forth through the first 3+ quarters but the Lions pulled away to secure the win and advance to the title game with Central Montcalm. The Hornets advanced with an overtime win at Kent City. The first time the teams met the Lions outran the Hornets in a track race that ended with the teams pouring in 159 points between them. Blake Kerr fired in 16 points followed closely by Josuah Long who tanked 15. Logan Klomp dished out 7 assists, Caris Nelson added 5 and both finished with 8 points. CSAA Playoff begins tomorrow; District Pairings announced
By Ken De Laat, N3 Sports For the second year of the CSAA tournament wil pit teams against each other according to their conference record starting Monday. In the top tier it will be Grant taking on conference champ Reed City on that daunted Coyote court and White Cloud visiting Cardinal country to face Big Rapids. The winners will play each other Wednesday and the other 2 will play for third place. In the middle tier it will be Chip Hills visiting Newaygo and Central Montcalm heading to Kent City with the final and consolation game on Wednesday The three remaining teams Tri County, Lakeview and Morley Stanwood will play a round robin set. Games are scheduled for 7pm but check with the school for any possible changes The last time Reed City and Grant faced each other the Coyotes had their way on the Tiger home court breaking open a close game with a 19-9 third quarter run. The Tigers can light it up on offense but the RC game is defense and their success has been due to keeping the score down.Outside of getting trampled in their season opener with McBain the Coyotes have held teams under 60 in all but 2 games. They last 5 times out opponents have averaged just 44. Coach Schuitema has a lot of scoring potential and the Tigers will need to hit their shots early and hopefully force RC into a shootout. White Cloud Coach Jones called the tourney a “revenge tour” and it will start with taking on the Cards one of the 2 teams to deliver conference losses to the Cloud. In their first meeting on the WC court the hosts gave the Cardinals a game playing them tight until the last 5 minutes when BR created some distance for the win. The Cards are young but have weathered a tough schedule well and improved in the process. Coach Jones has a talented team who play an unselfish game with different heroes emerging each game. If they can deliver a strong finish and keep Vennix, Haist & Co. from pouring in daggers from beyond the arc, they could be headed to the final. And just maybe it will be stop 2 on the tour. Newaygo’s loss to BR took them out of consideration for the top tier but they have a shot at gaining some momentum for the Districts. They will be hosting Chippewa Hills on Monday a team they bested by 15 back in November. The 5 teams the Warriors have beaten have a cumulative W-L record of 10-70. The winner will face the survivor of Kent City.Central Montcalm. The Eagles beat the Hornets by 11 in Stanton about a week ago Over in the WMC Fremont closes out the regular season with a pair of conference matchups.Tuesday the Pack will host one of the top teams in the state as Whitenhall brings their 20-0 record to town. Kent City 62 Grant 55 In the end it was just too much Maddie Geers. Way too much. Two of the top teams in the conference went to battle and there was a lot on the line for the Tigers. A win would send them to next week’s showdown with Morley Stanwood with a guaranteed share of the title already in their pocket. But they had to get past an Eagle squad that has been on fire winning 9 in a row including a pair of wins over state ranked teams The teams stayed even at 15 after one and the scoring slowed down in the second. Geers fired in 8 of the 10 Eagle points and Lily Krepps accounted for all 5 of the Tiger tallies, courtesy of the charity stripe. Down by 5 entering the third Emma Thompson, Reese Gragg and Jocee Pleune hit some key shots and when the quarter ended the hosts had knotted the score at 38 with 8 minutes to go. Except it wasn’t 8 minutes. Julie Ashbaugh hit 3 buckets while Welch and Gragg added one apiece. On the other side, Geers tallied all the 10 Eagle points including 3 trips to the line. When the dust cleared the teams were tied and overtime called. The extra frame saw more of Geers at the foul line where she made 9 of 12, added a bucket and delivered the Tigers their first home loss of the season. Coach Delamater: “This is a tough one to take. We battled all night. Whatever KC's game plan was for us tonight went out the window right away. Our girls played great defense on them and then Maddie Geers took over. She's a phenomenal player who moves extremely well without the ball and has extraordinary footwork. We doubled her at times and she still found a way to get the ball. We collapsed on her when she drove, and she still managed to get to the rim. On top of that, she was put on the line 22 times, equal to the amount of times we went to the line for the entire game. We had our shots. Now, going into the game on Friday against Morley, its winner takes all.” Julie Ashbaugh led the Tigers hitting for 14 points with Gragg close behind with 13. Thompson finished with 7 while Bella Welch and Kreps each tallied 5. Geers? She dropped a cool 46 on the night. Indeed a title game awaits when Morleystan hits town next Friday but before then Grant (12-4, 8-1) will host Whitehall (7-12, 5-6) on Tuesday. Reed City 57 White Cloud 15 The Coyotes took control early and never let go, running to an 11-3 lead after one and holding the Cloud scoreless in the second to build a 30-3 advantage. The visitors fired in a total of 10 triples on the night. Coach Wilk: “Senior night was a tough one for us. We couldn't get anything going, and RC played a great game on offense and defense. Luckily we have a few more games to send the seniors off on a higher note because tonight wasn't it. It looks like we won't have a game next week, so we will have plenty of time to work on things before we get into tournament time. This is always a fun time of the year, and I am excited to see what our girls can accomplish the rest of the way. The score was down for us tonight, but our spirits remain high. Don't count us out yet we have more basketball in us.” White Cloud (7-13, 2-8) will play in the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday February 27th. Opponent yet to be determined. Coyotes Take Title, Tigers Thump Eagles, Cards Curb Lions, Packers Snap Streak
Photos by Cassie Rickert Reed City 49 White Cloud 40 The gym was packed to the rafters for the final regular season game, a game that would determine if the Coyotes would claim the undisputed title or if White Cloud could crash their party by snaring a share of the crown. And while the visitors were able to hold off a relentless WC team and add to their trophy case, it certainly didn’t come easy. As they have all year, the Cloud players competed to the final buzzer against the conference champs in a matchup of two talented teams that could have gone either way until late in the game. The hosts jumped ahead in the first 10-8 thanks to the 8 points being chalked up by KJ Strait. The 2nd quarter saw the Coyotes take the lead but WC battled back to forge a 39-all score at intermission. In the second half RC put a stranglehold on the potent White Cloud offense holding them to just 7 third quarter points and going up by 9. In the final frame the Cloud tossed out a press leading to turnovers by the visitors but they didn’t translate enough of them into the points they needed to catch the Coyotes. Forced to foul as time was winding down the RC players hit the needed points from the line and came out on top in the game and in the conference. Coach Jones: “Unfortunately we came up a little short. Credit to Reed City. They are well coached, very talented and play very tough defense. We had our opportunities but our shots just didn't fall. Proud of the team and how hard they worked and the great season we've had so far but we're not done yet. The revenge tour starts next week” Strait finished with a game high 16 points while Jared Robinson canned 15, Jared Watson scored 8 and Noah Robinson added 4. White Cloud (16-4, 8-2) will travel to Big Rapids (14-6, 8-2) Monday in hopes of avenging an early season loss to the Cards. Grant 62 Kent City 42 The Tigers grabbed a share of second place in the conference with a convincing win over the Eagles. The hosts jumped out early taking a 17-8 lead after one then pushing the advantage to 14 points by the half. Intermission did nothing to cool down the Tigers who pushed the lead to 20 entering the 4th and coasted to the win. All 9 Tiger players made it into the book led by Lucas Swanson who scored 10. Zaiden Phillips and Ethand DeLong each hit for 8 while Oakley Obenauf and Aiden Booth finished with 7 apiece. Grant (13-5, 8-2) will get another shot at top seeded Reed City (17-3, 10-0) in the first round of the conference tournament Monday. Big Rapids 65 Newaygo 50 The Cardinals rained down a deluge of triples on the Lions with 7 of the 14 hits from distance belonging to Riley Vennix and the Cardinals cemented their spot in the top tier of conference playoff with the win. Logan Klomp scorched the nets for 25 points to lead the Lion offense while Caris Nelson delivered a team high 5 assists to go with his 11 points. Josiah Long led the Lions on the glass with 9 boards. Newaygo (12-8, 6-4) will host Chip Hills (5-15, 3-7) Monday in the conference tournament. Fremont 49 Montague 41 The Packers snapped a 5 game skid on the road with a comeback win over the Wildcats. Down 10 points heading into the 4th the Packer Dl came up huge. They stifled the Wildcat offense, holding them to just 2 points while pouring in 19 to snatch the lead and eventually the game. Coach Bowen: “This was a gutsy effort from our boys tonight! We struggled to find any rhythm offensively for the first three quarters. Montague is a very good defensive team, and Atchison makes it almost impossible to score near the basket with his length and athleticism. I thought our defense was very good also. We executed our game plan really well, and because of that we kept the game close. Kyler DeKuiper led the way for the Pack scoring 11 points to go with his 4 steals, and 4 rebounds. Will DeBlake finished with 10 points and 3 steals. Fremont (8-12, 4-6) will host Whitehall (20-0, 10-0). The D2 4th ranked Vikings can clinch the Lakes conference crown with a win. Photos by Bobbie Cruzan Grant 50 White Cloud 23 The host Tigers took a 7-2 lead after one before pulling away in the second as the offense heated up and delivered 21 points to White Cloud’s 8 and gave Grant an 18 point halftime lead. Coach Delamater: “Big games from Julie Ashbaugh and Alexa Obenauf propelled us to a win over White Cloud tonight. Our defensive rotation was excellent tonight and helped us on a night when we struggled to make shots from the floor.” Coach Wilk: “Going into tonight we knew that Julie Ashbaugh would do a good amount of scoring, and we wanted to try and limit some of their other players. We did a decent job. We just needed to take care of the ball a little better tonight. During the game it felt like we needed to make four good decisions to score, and we consistently made three good decisions, and then one bad decision that would hurt us. It just felt like we were so close on a bunch of opportunities. We get to play another similar opponent on Friday night for senior night. Hopefully we clean up a few things and get a win.” Asbaugh led the Tigers in scoring hitting for 16 points with Obenauf right behind with 14. Jaden Gomez was the top scorer for the Cloud as she scored 9 points including a pair of 4th quarter triples and Kadence Nickoff finished with a half dozen. First place Grant (8-0, 2-3) will host Kent City (6-2, 14-4) Friday and White Cloud (2-7, 7-12) will welcome in Reed City (6-2, 10-7). Big Rapids 49 Newaygo 24 The Cardinals wasted no time, popping in 10 points before the Lions got on the board. By halftime the visitors held a 25 -12 lead and cruised to the conference win. Coach Thomasma:"Our third straight game where we started off slow and it cost us tonight. Big Rapids played a good game. They really dictated the tempo and everything. All the credit to them. We'll move on from this and get ready for Monday.” Ruby Hughes led the Lions with 6 points and 8 rebounds. Amaya Lathrop and Maria Riddering each had 4 points. Newaygo (9-8, 3-6) visits Oakridge on Monday Cloud win over Tigers sets up a showdown in the county seat
Photos by Cassie Rickert White Cloud 77 Grant 70 Earlier this week we wrote about White Cloud’s road to a share of the title. Deadlocked with Grant for second place, a win on the Tiger home court would set up a Friday showdown with frontrunner Reed City. But it wasn’t going to be easy. The Tigers are a tenacious team who came into this one with 7 wins in their last 8 games and taking this one would keep them in the hunt for a share of the crown. The Tigers took a 23-18 lead after one but by the time the teams hit halftime the Cloud had closed the gap and the teams were tied at 38. It was a game of runs as the teams battled back and forth in the second half but the visitors held on at the end to secure the win. KJ Strait dropped a game high 30 points while Jarred Watson (17), Noah Robinson (15) and Jayden Robinson(14) also reached double figures. Oakley Obenauf paced the Tiger attack, hitting for 22 points, while Zaiden Phillips knocked down 17 and Ethan DeLong added 10. Grant (12-5, 7-2) hosts Kent City on Friday. The win by White Cloud (16-3, 8-1) sets up a wild one this Friday as the Coyotes (16-3, 9-0) bring their first place squad into town to not only face a talented and tough Cloud team, but also the highly spirited, boisterous group of students, parents, alumni and just plain fans who fill the stands on game night. Should be a dandy. Grant 66 Holton 26 The Tigers grabbed a 17-8 lead after one and held the undermanned Red Devils to just 4 points in the second to hit halftime up by 19. Coach Delamater”This was the start of a huge week for us. We knew Holton would not be a team to take lightly. They were without some of their varsity girls, which allowed us to put a lot of pressure on them in the full court. I thought our girls did a fantastic job tonight. A lot of the stuff we've been emphasizing was done well tonight. We held (Ryann) Robins to 7 points and did a good job keeping her off the glass. Our transition game was fantastic, and we got some great minutes from a lot of different girls tonight. Lily Krepps continued her stellar play off the bench, knocking down 5 threes tonight! The highlights of the night came in the fourth quarter when senior Julie Ashbaugh canned a three from the top of the key to tie the school scoring record and then moments later hit a two to score her 1055th point and take sole possession of the record!” Coach Jordan: “This was a tough one for us, already out 1 starter due to sickness, I get a message this morning that two other girls are out sick. I only have 8 on the team and 3 are out sick so we canceled the Jv game and I had to pull up a few Jv players just to have a bench. Issue with that is they haven't practiced with us all year and we are going against a really good Grant team that applies full court pressure all game. It was a perfect scenario for us to get steam rolled and that's exactly what happened. We checked out early on this one ,But We need to be at full strength and play a good game to have a chance tonight and neither of those two things happened tonight for us. We just have to reset and move on from tonight.Hopefully we can get healthy by Thursday as we have a huge rematch with N. Muskegon for 3rd place in the conference and we felt we let one slip away last time we played them , when we lost in overtime after a terrible first half.” Robins finished with 13 rebounds to go with her 7 points while Layla Cannady led the RD’s in scoring with 10. Abbie Fowler also booked 7 points and dished out a quartet of assists. Grant (11-3, 7-0) will host White Cloud (7-11, 2-6) on Wednesday and Holton (12-6, 5-4) will host North Muskegon (10-7, 5-4) on Thursday. Newaygo 50 Orchard View 20 The Lions made it 4 in a row taking a 23-14 lead at intermission then bursting out of the locker room with an 18-2 run that iced the game. Coach Thomasma: "Had another slow start tonight. We have to figure out how to get locked in and focused at the start of the game. The girls responded well coming out of the locker room at halftime. All 10 girls really executed and played well in the second half. It was a good team win for the group. We have a physical and good Big Rapids team coming in on Thursday. We must clean up a few things if we want to stay in the game with them. Naomi Schillman led the Lions with 14 points, Maria Riddering had 11 points and 7 steals and Amaya Lathrop contributed 8 points and 6 steals. Newaygo (9-7, 3-5) will host Big Rapids on Thursday. Packers make it 4 in a row, Fantastic finish for Cloud
Fremont 69 Shelby 45 Down by a point after one the Packers started heating up and knocked down 20 2nd quarter points to grab an 8 point lead at intermission. They came out of the locker room with a pressure defense that saw them go on a 14-0 run and cruise to the win. Coach Zerfas: “I thought the defense played by Katie Ackerman and Riley Chase in the second half changed the entire game. They were incredible. What they did allowed others to get steals and have scoring opportunities. Lots of credit to assistant coach Jared Hudson for breaking down their press break for us to adjust to. It was just a total team effort on our girls' part tonight with everyone contributing.” Jessica Bennett had a career high 27 points to go with her 8 blocks while Freshman Taylor DeKuiper also posted a career high firing in 18 points to go with her 10 steals. Mia Clemence had 10 assists and 4 points, Riley Chase had 6 points and 6 steals, Olivia Hansen and Khaila Noordyk both had 6 points and Eliana VandenBerg added 2. Grace Evans had 4 assists. Fremont (14-3, 9) will face Whitehall at home on Thursday. White Cloud 29 Montabella 27 The Cloud snapped a 5 game skid and did it in dramatic fashion. Here’s the skinny on the game from Coach Wilk: “What a night in White Cloud! WC fans got their money's worth tonight. If you like defense the first half was for you, but if you like miracles keep reading. The score was 4 to 4 at the end of the 1st, and we were tied 5 to 5 at halftime. Both teams adjusted well at halftime because the scoring picked up in the 2n half. We led 15 to 14 going into the 4th quarter. We held the lead for most of the 4th, but with about a minute left they hit a jumper to go up 1. “On our next possession we ended up running five plays from the baseline, and on that fifth play, after a timeout, Brooklyn Foondle drained a three from the corner, and that gave us a 2 point lead. Montabella went down and missed a shot and got their own weak side rebound and made a 15 foot shot from the corner to tie it up. “With about 30 seconds left we ran off 25 seconds before we made a backcourt violation. Montabella drew up a play in a timeout with 5 seconds left, and their play resulted in a travel. With 0.8 seconds left on the clock Foondle added a little more magic to the night by throwing a full court pass that would rival even the best quarterbacks to a streaking Gracy Holmes who caught it on the run. In full stride Holmes let it fly with defenders on both sides of her from just inside the 3 point line, and that ball found a home in the bottom of the net. Ball game White Cloud. “I want to shout out the student section because they stuck with us to the end! The memories of this game will be shared for many years. Almost everyone scored tonight, and I couldn’t be prouder of the resilience and fight that we showed tonight. Kadence Nickoloff led us with 7 points, and Holmes had 6.” White Cloud (7-11, 2-6) will travel to Grant on Tuesday.
