CSAA Playoff begins tomorrow; District Pairings announced
By Ken De Laat, N3 Sports For the second year of the CSAA tournament wil pit teams against each other according to their conference record starting Monday. In the top tier it will be Grant taking on conference champ Reed City on that daunted Coyote court and White Cloud visiting Cardinal country to face Big Rapids. The winners will play each other Wednesday and the other 2 will play for third place. In the middle tier it will be Chip Hills visiting Newaygo and Central Montcalm heading to Kent City with the final and consolation game on Wednesday The three remaining teams Tri County, Lakeview and Morley Stanwood will play a round robin set. Games are scheduled for 7pm but check with the school for any possible changes The last time Reed City and Grant faced each other the Coyotes had their way on the Tiger home court breaking open a close game with a 19-9 third quarter run. The Tigers can light it up on offense but the RC game is defense and their success has been due to keeping the score down.Outside of getting trampled in their season opener with McBain the Coyotes have held teams under 60 in all but 2 games. They last 5 times out opponents have averaged just 44. Coach Schuitema has a lot of scoring potential and the Tigers will need to hit their shots early and hopefully force RC into a shootout. White Cloud Coach Jones called the tourney a “revenge tour” and it will start with taking on the Cards one of the 2 teams to deliver conference losses to the Cloud. In their first meeting on the WC court the hosts gave the Cardinals a game playing them tight until the last 5 minutes when BR created some distance for the win. The Cards are young but have weathered a tough schedule well and improved in the process. Coach Jones has a talented team who play an unselfish game with different heroes emerging each game. If they can deliver a strong finish and keep Vennix, Haist & Co. from pouring in daggers from beyond the arc, they could be headed to the final. And just maybe it will be stop 2 on the tour. Newaygo’s loss to BR took them out of consideration for the top tier but they have a shot at gaining some momentum for the Districts. They will be hosting Chippewa Hills on Monday a team they bested by 15 back in November. The 5 teams the Warriors have beaten have a cumulative W-L record of 10-70. The winner will face the survivor of Kent City.Central Montcalm. The Eagles beat the Hornets by 11 in Stanton about a week ago Over in the WMC Fremont closes out the regular season with a pair of conference matchups.Tuesday the Pack will host one of the top teams in the state as Whitenhall brings their 20-0 record to town.
