Photos by Missy Gomez Shelby 33 White Cloud 25 In a game when scoring was often a premium the Tigers edged out their White Cloud hosts by making it count at the charity stripe. Coach Wilk: “Tonight, we battled tough against Shelby. It was a tight game all night. In the last game, we were a little out of rotation. In this game, we held Shelby to zero made shots in the first three quarters, but they made 15 free throws during that span to keep the game close. We led 2 to 1 at the end of quarter number one. At halftime, they tied us up at 10. In the third quarter, we took a slight 18 to 15 lead. Unfortunately, we ran into some ill-timed fouls, and they made six critical shots in the fourth quarter to put the game away. “Hats off to Shelby tonight; they shot 19 for 33 from the free-throw line, and our percentage was much lower than theirs. Our points were once again spread out. Gracy Holmes and Tanayah Klammer led us with 6 points, and Brooke Ringler chipped in 5 points as well. I’m proud of the way our team battled against a taller and very physical team. Even though we lost this one, we can build off of it.” White Cloud (1-0, 2-1) will return to conference play Friday when they visit the Hornets of Central Montcalm (0-1, 1-1). Lions Roar To Conference Win Story by Ken De Laat, photos by Alexis Mercer Newaygo 88 Central Montcalm 73 Ethan Reyburn triple. Blake Kerr scored the next 4 draining a pair from the line and adding a bucket. The Hornets responded with a pair of distance shots to tie at 9 . Hunter Yearsovich matched baskets with CM’s Joey Morrow then Russell Toth hit one to begin a 16-4 Lion run that delivered a 27-15 lead after one. In the second Kerr hit twice and Long converted 4 in a row from the stripe. Caris Nelson got into the fun with an acrobatic move to the hoop and Kerr found the hoop twice before Nelson ended the half with a bucket and the teams hit halftime with Newaygo up 48-30. The teams jockeyed back and forth with a couple of short runs by the Hornets but the Lions held home court and finished with the win.
Newaygo was led by Blake Kerr with 22 points and 7 rebounds, Josiah Long with 16 points and 6 rebounds, Caris Nelson with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, and Logan Klomp with 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Russell Toth gathered up 7 rebounds and Jaxon duChemin dished out 4 assists. Newaygo (2-0, 3-2) will host Orchard View (0-2,1-3) of the WMC on Tuesday. Unreal! Lions persevere, pull out conference opener Story by Ken De Laat, photos by Alexis Mercer Newaygo 44 Central Montcalm 40 Down the stretch you could almost hear the Rocky theme playing in the background. Battered, bruised and nearly, but not quite, beaten the Lions got up off the canvas and just took the game away from the Hornets. A game the visitors seemed to have well in hand. An unbelievable win as we enter the season that resonates Believe! the Lions began this unlikely journey by going scoreless for the first 6 ½ minutes of the game. When Maria Riddering scored followed by a Naomi Schillman bucket they got off the schneid but trailed 10-4. The second quarter saw much of the same as the Hornets stretched their lead to 15 points before Lillian Holmes banged one in off a rebound, followed with draining the foul shot. Schillman drilled a triple and after a Riddering steal, hit another basket to end the half down 27-18. After intermission the Hornets scored twice to push the lead back to 13 but the Lions dug deep once again with a pair of baskets by Amaya Lathrup sandwiching another hit by Schillman. Two CM scores were answered by Addison Goodin and the teams entered the final frame with the Hornets holding on to a 34-28 lead. CM scored the first basket of the 4th to go up 8. Then came the landslide. The Lions went on a tear at both ends of the court taking off on a 16-1 run that secured the conference win. Lathrup hit a triple and a 2 pointer then Kija Westbrook scored twice to give the Lions their first lead of the game with just under 4 minutes left. After a Hornet free throw to tie she scored again to give Newaygo the lead they would hold to the buzzer. Westbrook then iced it in the final minute when she canned one from distance. An impressive win for Coach Thomasma’s team. "I am extremely proud of my 10 girls tonight. At one point, we were down 15 points in the second quarter but we just kept playing hard. The girls stuck together and just gutted out a win. We were 1-7 from the FT line (CM was 17-25). We had 18 turnovers in the first half. We didn't play our best but the effort never stopped. They showed some mental toughness tonight and it's fun to see and coach."
Schillman finished with a team high 11 and added 7 rebounds while Lathrup and Westbrook hit for 9 and Holmes scored 7. Holmes played an outstanding game in the paint for the Lions, rejecting a six pack of Hornet attempts while working the glass for 8 boards. Goodin collected a half dozen rebounds to go with her 4 points and Riddering seemed to be all over the floor playing rugged defense against Hornet playmaker Carlie Bacon and helping the team break the CM press. Newaygo (1-0, 2-0) travels to Cedar Springs (2-0) Tuesday to take on a strong Red Hawk squad from the O.K. Gold. Story provided by Stacie Berenbrock
The Newaygo Lions Wrestling team traveled to Kent City this past Saturday for their annual Kent City Classic Kickoff. The wrestlers faced Byron Center, Whitehall, Kent City, Rockford and Fremont! Trayton Kooistra started the day off with a pin against Kent City with William Berenbrock, Brett Wismar, Luke Acton and Gavin Culver following suit, all pinning their Kent City Opponents. Cade Gerke grabbed a win by forfeit and Jayden Kopp and Sam Eager fought hard, but came up just short. Kent City was the only team in the same division as Newaygo. From there on out, they were wrestling D2 and D1 schools. They moved onto Whitehall next. Kooistra again started the Lions off with pinning his opponent. Again, following suit with pins were Berenbrock, Wismar, Culver and Gerke! From there they went onto wrestle the 6x defending champion of the Kent City Classic and D1 powerhouse Rockford! They knew it would be tough competition and that proved to be true, with William Berenbrock being the only one to pull away with a win by pin. Next up they took on Byron Center. Because Gavin Culver and Luke Acton are the same weight, Acton wrestled for Byron Center's team against his very own Gavin Culver. They put on quite the show as they intimidated each other from across the mat. Culver came out with that win by pin and following suit was Berenbrock, Wismar, Gerke and Kooistra, all pinning their Byron Center opponents. Lastly, the Lions faced off against Fremont. Again, with a team full of state placers, they knew this would be tough competition! Proving it was Brett Wismar being the only Newaygo Lion to obtain a win by pin and Trayton Kooistra bringing in a win by forfeit. Tigers sweep Wildcats, Cloud teams sink Vikings, O’s fly past Pack
Photos by Bobbi Cruzan Grant 82 Lakeview 32 A defensive 3rd quarter set the tone for the visiting Tigers victory over the Wildcats. After taking a 19-12 lead after one and boosting the lead to 16 by intermission the Tigers D shut down their hosts holding them to just 2 points in the quarter. Nine players scored with Zaiden Phillips leading the way with 17 points. Ethan DeLong added 15 while Oakley Obenauf and Sincere Hatch chipped in 13 and 12, respectively. It was the third straight win for Grant (2-0, 3-1) who will host Shelby (1-3) on Tuesday Grant 51 Lakeview 34 . The Tigers started strong, building a 12 point lead after one and keeping the Cats at bay to secure the win. Coach Delamater: “It was a very physical game and we responded well. We talk a lot about how teams are going to slow us down, and the physical play will be something we see every night. Lakeview did an excellent job limiting their turnovers and beating the press and we had to adjust on the fly. Our half court offense was great for as early as it is in the season.” Julie Ashbaugh paced the Tiger attack, knocking down 22 points and working the boards. Jocee Pleune fired in 10 points and Bella Welch hit for 9. White Cloud 31 Tri County 27 Coach Wilk: “ It was a close match from the start. After the first quarter, we were winning by just one point, 9-8. By halftime, we led 21-13. Both teams made adjustments at halftime and we traded a few points in the third. At the end of the third quarter we were leading 27-18, and it was just enough cushion for when Tri-County made three 3s in the fourth quarter. We were able to make our free throws at the end to come out on top. Jaden Gomez and Tanayah Klammer scored 8 points each, and Kadence Nickoloff added 6 points. Gracy Holmes added 5, and Brooke Ringler dropped in 4 points herself. Gomez also led us with five steals. Things got intense in the last quarter when Jaden Gomez accidentally got hit in the face. There was a break to clean up the blood on the court, and Jaden was able to return a few minutes later after she cleaned up her bleeding lip. This win wasn't just about scoring points, it was also about how our team was able to successfully handle adversity. Sometimes, a tough battle is what a team needs. I’m just glad we came out on the right side of it tonight. White Cloud (1-0, 2-0) will host Shelby (2-0) on Monday. White Cloud 66 Tri County 50 The Cloud opened conference play with a win over the Vikings. Mason County Central 54 Holton 32 A shorthanded Red Devil team made the trip to Scottville Thursday to take on MCC and could not keep pace with the Spartans. Coach Jordan: “We struggled to put the ball in the hoop tonight, and ran out of gas in the second half. We only had 7 tonight so the rotation was shorter than you would like. The girls logged in a bunch of minutes tonight and our lack of conditioning showed. So we are going to have to address that over the next few weeks and if we can’t finish games we will continue to struggle in the second half against good teams. “Unlike the first game we had zero balance and Ryann was the only one who scored more than 5 points for us, which is not a recipe for success for us. “We hope to get back on track next week as we try to string a few quality games together and continue to work on our weaknesses.” Robins finished with 21 points and pulled down 13 boards for the Devils while Abby Fowler dished out a half dozen assists to go with her 4 points. After two road games to begin the season Holton (0-1, 1-1) will return home to face longtime rival Hesperia (0-1, 1-1). The Tiger Wrestling team started the season strong with wins over Ottawa Hills 66-18 and host Godwin Heights 54-22. Eight players scored for Grant with Oakley Obenauf and Blake Rider leading the way with 13. Zaiden added 12 and Lucas Swanson chipped in 7. Blake Weirich had a huge night for the Pirates finishing with a game high 28 points. Grant (1-0, 2-1) will play at Lakeview (0-2, 1-2) Friday. White Cloud 53 M.C.C. 42 The Cloud got back on the winning track with a win over the Spartans. Coach Jones: “We haven't had much success against this team in the past years, but tonight we finally got a win. So happy for the team. They worked their tails off tonight and came away with a big team victory. Jayden Robinson had a big night dropping a game high 33 points and Noah Robison hit for 9 while effectively working the glass for the hosts. K.J Strait scored a half dozen points and Jared Watson added 4. White Cloud (0-0, 2-1) will open conference play Friday when they travel to Tri County (1-1, 1-3) to face the Vikings. Montague 68 Newaygo 48 Montague got off to a good start and carried it for four quarters. The difference came in the second quarter as Newaygo was outscored by 12. Trailing by 16 at half, the Lions fought back and got within 8 but they were unable to get any closer and the Wildcats pulled away Caris Nelson led three Lion players finishing in double figures with 13 points. Josiah Long hit for an even dozen and Logan Klomp scored 10. Newaygo (1-0, 2-2) gets a home game Friday after 3 in a row on the road. The Lions will welcome in Central Montcalm (0-1, 2-1) Girls Holton 40 Oakridge 24 The Red Devils opened their season with a convincing win over the Eagles. Coach Jordan: “Sluggish start for us as expected for first game. But we were able to pick it up a little and pull away in the second half. We weren't able to create turnovers tonight really at all, but we also didn't Turn the ball over that much either, which is a very good thing for us , less than 10 on the night. Which we will take any game let alone the first. “Lexi Bart hit 3 big 3's and lead is in scoring with 11 and Aubrey Goyings energy in the second half was a big lift for us Ryann Robins basically played the entire game , which is not ideal for us but with only 8 and Aubrey batting early foul trouble we just couldn't take her out. Abbie Fowler didn’t get in the scorers box , which won’t happen often but she contributed with 8 assists and that’s her strength.. so she had a solid night with 8 assists and 1 turnover.Layla Cannady also scored 10 and hit a few 3’s as well. “It wasn't our best game but given that and being able to win by double digits is something we can be optimistic about… we only gave up 10 second half points and scored 25 so that’s what you want to be able to do , is close out a game in the second half. “We have a ton of room for improvement, but we got beat by 20 last year by Oakridge so to get the first win against them is something we can be happy about.” Holton (1-0) will head for Scottville Thursday to take on Mason County Central (1-0). Spring Lake 54 Fremont 32 The Packers (0-1) will host Oakridge (0-1) on Tuesday |
