The Newaygo Lions Wrestling team traveled to Kent City this past Saturday for their annual Kent City Classic Kickoff. The wrestlers faced Byron Center, Whitehall, Kent City, Rockford and Fremont! Trayton Kooistra started the day off with a pin against Kent City with William Berenbrock, Brett Wismar, Luke Acton and Gavin Culver following suit, all pinning their Kent City Opponents. Cade Gerke grabbed a win by forfeit and Jayden Kopp and Sam Eager fought hard, but came up just short. Kent City was the only team in the same division as Newaygo. From there on out, they were wrestling D2 and D1 schools. They moved onto Whitehall next. Kooistra again started the Lions off with pinning his opponent. Again, following suit with pins were Berenbrock, Wismar, Culver and Gerke! From there they went onto wrestle the 6x defending champion of the Kent City Classic and D1 powerhouse Rockford! They knew it would be tough competition and that proved to be true, with William Berenbrock being the only one to pull away with a win by pin. Next up they took on Byron Center. Because Gavin Culver and Luke Acton are the same weight, Acton wrestled for Byron Center's team against his very own Gavin Culver. They put on quite the show as they intimidated each other from across the mat. Culver came out with that win by pin and following suit was Berenbrock, Wismar, Gerke and Kooistra, all pinning their Byron Center opponents. Lastly, the Lions faced off against Fremont. Again, with a team full of state placers, they knew this would be tough competition! Proving it was Brett Wismar being the only Newaygo Lion to obtain a win by pin and Trayton Kooistra bringing in a win by forfeit.
