Nathan Walker has been awarded 1st Team All-Conference accolades for four straight years; Ben Paige and Conor Somers for three straight years and Josh Zerfas and Adam Ward for the last two years. Paige (1), Zerfas (2) and Ward (1) have received All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in past seasons as well. While not figuring in the scoring, Gavin Shuler, Nathan Johnson and Jackson Fair provided strong support, all finishing with impressive times and in the top fifteen of the field of 62 runners. The Fremont girls won their first outright Conference Championship since 2015 (they were Co-Champions in 2018). The Girls won the race with 52 points, edging out Reed City who was 2nd with 59 points. Juniors Taylor Mater and Taava Johnson earned 1st Team All-Conference honors, the second time Mater has been so honored, while Leah Converse earned All-Conference Honorable Mention for the third straight year. Erin Norton and Emily Curtis rounded out Fremont’s top five finishers in their championship race. Elise Pfeiffer and Sierra Horton also turned in strong performances. The JV boys also ran an impressive race taking control of the race and finishing in the first five places to match the perfect score turned in by the varsity. Freshman Johnny Christensen led the way followed by Henrik Quist, Sean Pettis, Gary Springstead and Colton Isenhart. The next race on the slate for the Fremont runners is Pre-Regionals this coming Saturday at Chippewa Hills. Races begin at 11:00 a.m.

Grant 41 Central Montcalm 13 The Tigers hosted Central Montcalm Friday for their final home game of the season, Senior Night. After what Coach Geraghty called “a successful week of practice” Grant found their offense and beat the Hornets 41-13 The Tigers scored on their opening drive when Senior QB Brendan Keelean scrambled right and ran it in from 5 yards out. Gonzalo Magana was successful on the point after giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead. Central Montcalm answered on their opening drive and tied the score, 7-7. Early in the second quarter Magana kicked a 35-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 10-7 lead. The Hornets scored on a 25-yard pass (PAT failed) to make the score 13-10 Hornets. The Tigers Scored next on a 20-yard pass from Keelean to Junior Brady Jacobs (Magana PAT) to make the score 17-13. The Grant defense notched a safety (Senior Reid Williams) making the score 19-13 Tigers. Grant received the free kick, and took only 47 seconds to find the end zone again when Keelean threw a long pass (56 yards) to senior Isiah Powell for the touchdown. Keelean ran in the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 27-13 at the half. During the third quarter Keelan found the end zone again on a three-yard run (Magana PAT) giving your Tigers a 34-13 lead. Grant's defense rose to the task in the second half not allowing the Hornets to score. Keelean scored again in the fourth quarter on a 31-yard run (Magana PAT) to complete the scoring- Grant 41, Central Montcalm 13. Keelean led the ground attack with 24 carries for 145 yards and 3 TD’s. Brady Jacobs had 2 carries for 52 yards. Keelean was 9 for 18 passing for 142 yards and 2 TD’s. Jacobs collected 3 receptions for 39 yards, Brett Long caught 2 for 21 yards and Jonah Nelson had 2 catches for 17 yards. The Tigers defense had another stellar performance holding the 3-1 Hornets to two scores. Junior Treyton Railling had 9 tackles including 1 TFL. Junior Colin Millett had 8 tackles (1 TFL). Senior Brett Long had 7 tackles including 1 sack and 1 TFL. Senior Reid Williams had 2 tackles including a safety. Senior Orion Evans also had 2 tackles and an interception. Coach Geraghty: “I’m very happy for these kids, especially the Seniors! Our coaching staff put together a great game plan on both sides of the ball and these kids executed the plan! Central Montcalm is a well-coached team with some incredible athletes. “ Next week the Tigers (2-2) travel to Reed City to take on the Coyotes (5-0). Reed City 46 Fremont 6 Payton Mansfield found an open Elijah Shears for a 33 yard scoring strike in the first quarter. Unfortunately that proved to be all the scoring the Pack could muster as Reed City claimed the conference crown for the 9th time in 10 seasons with a convincing win on the road. The Coyotes held a 16-6 lead after one but by intermission they were in control behind a 38-6 edge. They scored four times on the ground, once in the air, and once on a pick 6. Kam Hornof paced the defense with 7 tackles while Michael Romero and Gabe Van Vleet collected 5 apiece. Mansfield (55yds) and Tristen Marfia (33yds) led the team in rushing. Fremont (1-4) winds up regular season play next week with a trip to Big Rapids (3-2) while Reed City (5-0) finishes at home against Grant (2-2) Morley Stanwood 32 Holton 24 The Red Devils tossed everything they had at Morley coming back early to take an 18-16 lead at the break. But the ‘Hawks scored twice in the second half before the Devs got back into the game and though both teams scored 4 times, MS converted each of their two point tries while Holton could not pick up any extra point attempts Coach Jados: “We played well in the first half but came out a little flat in the third quarter to let them take the lead. After we drove down at the end of the fourth to score our fourth touchdown of the night we couldn’t stop them with the under three minutes to go to get the ball back. “We’re really close to be in a really good football team and have a tough game against Muskegon Catholic next week that will show how good we can be going into the playoffs.” Austin Fowler fired off three TD passes and ran in for another . Austin Hawkins was the beneficiary of 2 TD tosses by Fowler and Rice Robins gathered in the other.Hawkins also led the team in tackles with 10 while Cam Edgerton and Dylan Cartwright each had 8 tackles. Holton (2-3) faces the Crusaders(5-0) on the road Friday. MCC has outscored their 5 opponents 191-18 Big Rapids 29 Tri County 22 (OT) The Cards prevailed in an overtime made possible by a failed extra point attempt by the Vikings. TC grabbed a 14-0 lead they looked to hold as the teams headed toward intermission but Cardinal sophomore qb Wil Strickler led a drive that covered the field in 30 seconds and culminated with a TD as time expired in the half. Theteams battled through a rugged second half and when TC scored to tie it up with just over 2 minutes to play it came down to the conversion and the Cardinals rose to the occasion to preserve the tie. BR scored in their first OT possession and a Viking fumble sealed the win for the Cards. Big Rapids (3-2) will host Fremont 1-4)) and TC will hit the road to face Chippewa Hills. Saturday Hesperia 36 Perry 21 Perry scored first on the opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, but then the Panthers woke up and took control the rest of the way. Johnnie Majersky ran one in from 3 yards out then Mack Baird scored on a 39 yard sprint’ Brady Quinn was the next Panther to score, blasting through a hole for a 28 yard touchdown and at intermission Hesperia led 22-14. The second half saw Majersky finding River Roberson for a 10 yard score and Quinn capping off the scoring with a 3 yard plunge. Baird finished with 12i yards rushing and Quinn added 83.Quinn also led the team in tackles with 10 and Majersky picked a pair of Rambler passes Hesperia (3-2) willplay their season finale at White Cloud. Lions Defeated on Homecoming Night
N3 Sports Team The Warriors got on the board first scoring early in the second then missed the 2 point conversion a few plays later Brenden Brechting hit on a pass to Remy Wells who sprinted into the end zone and the Ashton Stephens PAT gave the Lions the lead at 7-6. It was the last time they would lead in a contest that saw a relentless CH running attack led by Paris Alston pile up over 350 yards. The Warriors landed a quick strike before the half to take a 12-7 lead. After intermission the teams exchanged scores but the Lions could not stop the grinding ground game the visitors put on display Friday night and fell short on homecoming night. 4 Vikes, 3 Lions and a Tiger make first team
Fremont Soccer ran through conference play undefeated lost only one game all season and topped it all off with a conference tournament title. When they faced the Orioles in the opener of the state tourney they were coming off an 8 game unbeaten streak that included a tight 1-0 win over their first round opponent the Orioles of Ludington. This time they played in Oriole territory and the Packers had a long bus ride home after being bested 5-1 by their hosts. The season is over for the Pack but postseason honors are still being passed out and 5 Fremont players landed on the first team along with one player given honorable mention. Four Tri County players, three from Newaygo, and one from Grant are named to the first team and each team had an honorable mention player. Tri County remains in the D3 tournament with a match against Ravenna Tuesday while Newaygo and Grant lost their openers. Cloud wins second...off the field.
Reed City (4-0) at Fremont (1-3) The Packers picked up a win last week on the road...the long road… to Remus. It was the first for Coach Jason Carpenter and will be a confidence builder heading into the postseason. This will be their third and final home game unless they win out and maybe get one in the first round. But that would mean beating the Coyotes. Reed City runs the wing T offense to near perfection and while it is perhaps not the most exciting offense to watch it is extremely productive with the kind of o-line the ‘Yotes possess. They are averaging close to 50 points a game and last week piled up 646 yards on the ground against Newaygo.. 646! Last week the Packer offense showed signs of progressing to where Coach C. and his staff want them to be. The RC defense isn’t as formidable as, say, Tri County so the opportunity to score is there-particularly if the passing game gets some early traction. But to beat the undefeated Coyotes? RC will grind down a defense if given the chance so a few time consuming scoring drives early would help a lot. And maybe get a few breaks. Well, likely a lot of breaks. And maybe a turnover or three. Chippewa Hills (0-4) at Newaygo (2-2) Homecoming for a Lion team coming off a high octane loss to league leading Reed City. The bad news is Newaygo allowed 70 points. The good news is although undermanned in terms of numbers they stayed close for a half against a relentless Coyote offense and put up 40. The Warriors yield points. Opponents are averaging over 30 and while their offense can score they haven't done it enough to come close to winning. Central Montcalm (3-1) at Grant (1-2) The Hornets aren’t blowing anyone out but they’ve beaten everyone they’ve faced except for Reed City. This has been a challenging year for Coach Geraghty and his squad, missing a pair of games and yet they’ve only really lost one game- a road contest in Big Rapids played after a 3 week layoff...and despite the score a game that could have gone either way. The Tigers can deliver a win and improve their postseason seeding here out but it won’t be easy. They need to get off to a quick start because if they fall behind, the Bees will look to slog it downfield with time eating drives and the Tigs don’t have an offense conducive to comebacks. Big Rapids (2-2) at Tri County (2-2) The Vikes have perhaps the best defense in the conference, allowing teams to cross the goal line just 5 times in 4 games. Scoring can be iffy, though. The Cards have won 2 in a row after falling to the 2 teams they are staring up at in the standings. If TC scores three times they should win. Morley Stanwood (3-1) at Holton (2-2) Two weeks ago RD Coach Mike Jados said his squad was “really close to being a good football team.” Here’s their chance to arrive and claim that distinction. They lost to Kent City but so has everyone else and barring some key miscues and time spent spinning their wheels in the first half they could have taken the golden football home last week. But good football teams win big games and this is a big game. The ‘Hawks are tough and kept the scoreboard busy running up 98 points against WC and Lakeview, teams the Red Devils squeaked past. The hosts need a couple of big plays, way fewer mistakes and for Austin Fowler to find some open receivers early. Kent City (4-0) at Lakeview (0-4) The Eagles defense is stellar. The last 2 weeks the offense has hit their stride. Long night for the ‘Cats. Saturday: 1pm Hesperia (2-2) at Perry (0-4) I can’t see Doug Bolles’ squad dropping this one The Ramblers can’t score and can’t stop other teams from scoring. Mack Baird and the Johnny Majersky led Panther offense should have a field day Saturday afternoon. Friday Early Result White Cloud 1 River Valley 0 The Cloud players would much rather decide this one on the field but it goes in the books as a win, their second by forfeit. The 4 teams at the top of the CSAA standings are still in the tourney but the bottom tier all ended their season on Wednesday in D3 postseason play. Montague eliminated Newaygo, Oakridge defeated Grant ,Ravenna took out Kent City and Hart outscored Reed City. Tri County (9-4) trounced Orchard View and will move on to face Ravenna (2-8) on Tuesday at the Oakridge field. Big Rapids drew a bye and will host the Pirates of Hart (4-9-2) also on Tuesday. In D2 Fremont is on the road Thursday to face Ludington. In D4 play Lakeview (5-6) slipped by Pentwater and will play the winner of BR Crossroads and North Muskegon. Wednesday Montague (9-5-1) at Newaygo (5-6) 5pm The Lions started the season by peeling off 4 wins in a row and outsourcing opponents 22-2. Since then, though they have gone 1-6 with 4 of those losses coming against league leaders Fremont and TC. The Wildcats don’t always score a lot but their defense is pretty solid. How solid? They handed Fremont their only loss of the season by a 1-0 score. Oakridge (5-2-3) at Grant (2-8) 7pm The Tigers snapped a 6 game losing streak with a high scoring 6-4 win over Reed City in the conference tourney. The Eagles have won 5 but only one win came over a team with a winning record. It’s been a tough year for Grant but if they get on the board early at home and show some Tiger tenacity on defense they will be moving on in the postseason Orchard View (1-14-1) at Tri County (8-3) 6pm The Vikes wanted another shot at Fremont but they stumbled against Big Rapids on their way to the showdown. TC is a solid team and the Cardinals have won just once while being shut out 10 times Thursday Fremont (13-1-2) at Ludington (10-4-1) 6:30pm Two powerhouse teams facing each other in the first round making a good argument for seeding. The Packers have pitched 10 shutouts and scored over 6 goals seven times. They tore through conference play and the conference tourney. The Orioles have lost just once in their last 10 games, a 1-0 defeat at the hands (well, feet I guess) of Fremont in Packer territory. This one is in Ludington and the O’s would love to avenge that loss in the postseason. From Coach Strait: Last Thursday, the Lady Indians traveled to Grant to take on Orchard View, Muskegon Catholic Central, and Grant. The ladies finished 2-1 on the night with a win over Grant and Orchard View, but came up short to MCC. Leaders on the night were Abby Derks with 10 points, followed by Alexis Strait and Elizabeth Compeau with 8 points each. Alexis led with 23 kills and Cassie Watson followed with 17. Alexis and Abby also had a nice night on the net with 5 blocks each. Alexis and Carsyn Scarlavai helped run the offense with 28 and 17 assists respectively. Elizabeth had a great night defensively with 36 digs followed by Alexis with 28. Central State Activity Association 2020 Girls Golf All League Standings 1. Big Rapids Coach Mark Posey 2.
