Packers clip Cards, Vissia ices match with PK
The Cardinals of Big Rapids traveled to Fremont Saturday morning for the CSAA conference tournament final match. Big Rapids struck just 3 minutes into the match on a penalty kick by Aden Herron. Several minutes later Fremont knotted the game on a shot from Lane Converse with an assist by Conner Roesler. That score stood for 15 minutes until Converse struck again, this time being assisted by Waden Woods. Less than a minute later Herron tied the match for Big Rapids and it was 2-2 at the half. Both teams had opportunities in the second half but couldn't seem to capitalize. Grant Vissia was taken down in the box and finished the following penalty kick. That goal stood as the Packers won 3-2. Fremont outshot Big Rapids 10-7. Fremont's goalkeeper Joe Kortge made 5 saves and Big Rapids' keeper Owen Gammons made 7 saves. I am proud of our players and coaching staff, to come out here and compete the way they did says a lot about their tenacity. “We will head back to the drawing board and be ready for a tough Central Montcalm team next week at home”. The Tigers (1-2) will be back at home to host the Hornets (3-1) Friday. Fremont 42 Chippewa Hills 26 The Packer air game took flight Friday as Payton Mansfield tossed for 266 yards but it was on the ground where he did the damage on the scoreboard posting a quintet of TD’s behind an insisted offensive line. When Tristen Marfia punched in a 5 yard score before the half the visitors took a 28-8 lead into intermission but the Warriors responded in the third scoring twice to pull within a score the Fremont QB found the end zone twice more including breaking away for a 37 yard scramble. Mafia finished with 79 yards rushing and Mansfield logged 147 while Adam Halasinski pulled in 7 passes for 144 yards. The win was number one for first year coach Jason Carpenter and snapped a 17 game futility streak dating back to mid season 2018 when the victory over Central Montcalm put to rest a 30 game skid. The Packers (1-2) will be back at home next week when they welcome in the undefeated Coyotes of Reed City (4-0). Reed City 70 Newaygo 40 There was a track meet in Reed City Friday as the teams amassed 44 points in a mistake filled first quarter that ended with the hosts holding a 24-20 lead. The scoring parade continued to the halfway point and the teams hit intermission with the ‘Yotes in a 40-33 lead. The first possession of the third quarter saw RC get on the board quickly and follow it up with another TD before entering the final frame leading 56-33 Kent City 56 White Cloud 0 It was never in doubt. The Eagles blasted past the Cloud picking off 5 passes and scoring early and often as they rolled to a 55-0 lead at the half and ran out a running clock after intermission. White Cloud (1-3) will host River Valley, a team with one win and two losses despite not having played a game (all forfeits). WC’s lone win also came on a forfeit. Hesperia 21 Holton 14 The Panthers leapt out to a 21-0 lead by the break with Mack Baird scoring twice and Jonnie Majersky finding the endzone as well. The second half saw the Red Devils fight their way back but after a bad snap late in the 4th gave the visitors a chance to change the outcome of the game, a pair of penalties and some defensive heroics by Baird sealed the win for the Panthers and allowed them to retain possession of the Golden Football. “We struggled in the first half to move the ball and struggled on defense as well.. We came out in the second half and gave a much better effort to control the ball the entire third-quarter. “Our all mistakes beat us in the end and we couldn’t convert.” Mack Baird led the ground attack with 200 yards on 23 carries and 2 TD’s, while senior QB Johnny Majersky had 46 yards on 11 carries and 1 TD. Hesperia (2-2) will head south to take on Perry (0-4) while Holton (2-2) hosts Morley Stanwood (3-1). Lions Battle Through Two 5 Set Wins
Story by Kristin Melvin Photos by Alexis Mercer After coming off of a two-week hiatus, the Lions returned to the volleyball court with two very tough conference opponents in Grant and Fremont. On Tuesday, the Lions traveled to Grant to take on the Tigers for their first game since September 15 and came away with a 3-2 victory. The game was a back and forth battle all night with Grant taking set 1, Newaygo set 2, Grant set 3, and then Newaygo took the final two sets to seal the victory. In set 1, the Tigers came out ready to go and won the set 25-21 while the Lions tried to find their groove. Newaygo bounced back in set 2; 25-23 and then fell 23-35 in set 3. Down 2 sets to 1, and having to win out the night the Lions offense went to work against a very scrappy Grant defense. Newaygo took set 4, 25-22 and set 5, 15-13. In set 5, Sophomore Emma Mortensen and Junior Kayla Fisk came in at a score of 8-9 and brought some fresh legs and much needed energy to help propel the Lions to a set 5 victory! Rylee Maat was a force offensively for the Lions with 16 kills on the night while Emma Reyburn had 27 assists. Sydney Maat, Lily Swinehart and Lily Ruehmeir tallied 20 blocks on the night while Emmerson Goodin (14) and Kendall Mathis (12) fought defensively to lead the team in digs. While Newaygo wanted to celebrate a long awaited win over Grant, they immediately had to look forward to another rivalry and tough Fremont team on Thursday. Thanks to a great Yoga session on Wednesday with Cross Country Coach Mercer, the Lions looked to get back on the court refreshed and energized. Fremont came into Newaygo undefeated in the CSAA with a big win over Central Montcalm who took a win from Newaygo earlier in the season. Again, it was a battle all night. Both teams fought back and forth with some long, exciting rallies. Newaygo took set 1, 25-22 and then Fremont would take the next two sets 25-23 and 28-30. In set 4, Newaygo played with a different enthusiasm and came away with the win 25-10 to force a game 5 for the 2nd time this week. You couldn’t have asked for a more exciting game 5; point for point most of the game with a couple multiple point leads lead to a final score of 19-17 in favor of Newaygo. Victory Lions, 3-2. Offensively, Ruehmeier led the way with 15 kills followed by Rylee Maat with 12, Swinehart and Sydney Maat with 8 kills each. Reyburn added another 33 assists on the night. Mathis (17), Goodin (13) and Haleigh Schmitt (11) led the way defensively with a total of 41 digs. “After being off for a few weeks, we couldn’t have picked a more exciting week of volleyball. We knew coming back both Grant and Fremont were going to be tough, and both rivalry games, but the girls battled through both nights. Both games were a total team effort, in which we had players stepping up in all positions.” “I am so proud of these girls. Being down in both games, and fighting back until the absolute end, finding a way to pick up a couple big wins against some tough teams.” Anytime you can come away with two big conference (rivalry) wins in a week, it is a good week. Newaygo will host Reed City on Tuesday (10/13), and White Cloud on Thursday (10/15). Newaygo(2-1) at Reed City (3-0) A rivalry forged during their first two game series in 2012 (they did the same in 2014) has continued and while RC has taken 6 of 8 since this one is always a tossup. Playing in Coyote Country is never easy but the Lions are eager to get back on the field after missing the classic annual battle with Grant and need this to have a shot at the conference crown because it’s doubtful the 'Yotes will lose many more games going forward. Fremont (0-3) at Chippewa Hills (0-3) Despite their record the Packers have improved each week and are facing a Warrior team that is also 0-3 thus far. Chip Hills can score and has kept close in their three losses. Since joining the CSAA the Pack has lost each of their 4 games against CH and chances are the hosts will be looking to get off the schneid with a win over a team they have handled easily in the recent past. We have a hunch they may be in for a few surprises Friday Grant (1-1) at Big Rapids (1-2) It’s been 3 weeks since the Tiger opening game when they handed Tri County their only loss a 7-6 defensive battle. Now they need to shake off the rust and hopefully find a little more offense, Orion Evans can be a punishing runner and Brenden Keelean should get some opportunities to air it out a bit. The Cards beat Chip Hills last week but teams possessing a strong defense have bottled them up. Grant has a strong defense. White Cloud (1-2) at Kent City (3-0) The Eagle offense took wing last week after a pair of passable performances and will likely put points on the board. It’s hard to say how the Cloud will fare here. They won last week without taking the field so there;’s been a layoff which could help a little, but they are going to have to be ready to forestall any quick start by KC because if they fall behind early it could be a long night given the Eagles ability to run away from opponents Holton (2--1) at Hesperia (1-2) The Devils showed some mettle against the undefeated Eagles last week but they need to improve their red zone play. The defense is better than the 30 KC hung on them the Austins (QB Fowler and RB Hawkins) give the offense some pop but the Panther defense is a rugged group who won’t yield ground easily and Holton will have to find a way to contain Mack Baird who seems to be all over the field. Netters Tie With Falcons The Fremont Boys' Varsity Tennis Team ended their regular season with a 4-4 tie with Grand Rapids West Catholic on a beautiful afternoon in Fremont. Winner were: #1 Singles Finn Giberson (Sr.) 6-3, 6-0; #2 Singles Joey DeLong (Jr.) 6-0, 6-3; #4 Singles Jonathan Spielmann (Sr.), and #1 Doubles Parker VandenBerg (Sr.)/Jaxon Deur (Sr.) 6-3, 6-0. The team ended the regular season with a record of 3-7-2. On Wed., Oct. 7 the team travels to Ludington for the Regional tournament. Packers Tame Tigers to Advance The Grant Tigers came to Fremont to play the Packers in the first round of the CSAA tournament Monday afternoon. Grant struck first on a goal by Tomas Charles. Fremont answered with single goals from David Wachter, Braiden McDonald and Carson Herman and a hat trick by Marcus Klimek. Klimek, Logan Nelson and Wachter also tallied assists. Fremont outshot Grant 16-5. Joe Kortge made 2 saves in net for Fremont and Carter Miller also made 3 saves for the Packers. Christian Cortez made 10 saves for the Tigers. Fremont moves to 11-1-2 overall and 10-0 in the conference. Grant fell to 1-10 overall and 1-9 in the conference. Fremont advances to play the winner of the Newaygo vs. Kent City match on Wednesday. Packer Boys take top spot at Otsego Invite Story and photos by Mike Paige The Fremont High School Cross Country teams traveled to Otsego on October 3 for the Bulldog Elite Invitational. Competing were ten of the top Division 2 teams in the state. This meet provided a good gauge of the team’s standing among their top rivals. It was perfect racing weather. The course was a double loop, relatively flat with lots of twists and turns. As reigning state champions, the varsity boys were excited to run against some high caliber athletes and knew every team would be out to get them. They did not appear to be rattled by the challenge. Nathan Walker led the Packers with a first-place overall finish of 15:04. Conor Somers had a very impressive race, outsprinting Otsego’s number one guy at the finish, and taking second with a PR (personal record) of 15:30. Ben Paige was Fremont’s next finisher at 16:08, coming in at 13th, even after losing a shoe with over a mile to go. Adam Ward (16:27/17th) and Josh Zerfas (16:29/18th) completed the top five. Twins Brennan and Gavin Schuler were the 6th and 7th runners finishing 33rd and 46th. The boys took first place with 51 points, Pinckney was 2nd with 82 and Otsego was 3rd with 101. Otsego finished second at the state finals in 2019 and Pinckney, while not fielding a team in the Division 1 finals, had three qualifying runners come in at 16:30 or better. Pinckney is now in Division 2. The JV boys also ran great in a very competitive race. Nathan Johnson led the way for Fremont finishing 7th at 17:41. John Christensen ran aggressively to finish 9th and set a new PR of 17:45. Jackson Fair was next, finishing 13th and setting a new PR with 17:59. The next four runners to cross the finish line for Fremont all set new PRs, Sean Pettis 18:54, Etienne Bonnel 19:35, Gary Springstead 20:04, and Pep Costa 21:28. The girls ran a strong race. Taava Johnson thrived in the quick turns and was the number one Packer runner (45th overall), setting a new PR of 21:11. Leah Converse was next for Fremont, running 21:32, followed by Erin Norton at 22:10 and Emily Curtis at 22:13. Elise Pfeiffer, the lone freshman girl on the team, stepped up and had a terrific race and set a new PR of 25:47. Sierra Horton and Ruby Stein ran solid races today for the girls’ JV team. Fremont next competes on Tuesday Oct. 6 for a conference race at Conklin Park in Croton. Tough competition provides challenging matches
From Coach Strait: This past weekend, the Lady Indians traveled to Whitehall. We started out the morning playing a strong defensive Whitehall team. After dropping the first set, we came back and won the second, and eventually lost the match with the third set. The next match, we saw Fruitport. We came out strong winning the first set, lost the second and won the third. The final match of the day we were faced playing a strong Catholic Central team and unfortunately dropped that match 0-3. Offensive leaders on the day were Alexis Strait with 34 assists, followed by Carsyn Scarlavai with 22. Naomi led serving with 19 points and Alexis with 15. Alexis and Cassie Watson had a great day on the net with 28 and 18 kills respectively. Defensively, Alexis led with 6 blocks on the day followed by Emily Hodges with 4. Alexis also led with digs with 30, with Naomi Thompson not too far away with 27. Overall, a great job on the day. We will host Morley Stanwood on Monday. Tri County 20 Fremont 12 The Vikings collected their second win in a row by scoring three times in the opening frame before the Packer defense stiffened, holdingTC back while fighting to get back in the game. Just before intermission Payton Mansfield broke free for a 38 yard score After a missed PAT the teams went to the locker rooms with the visitors up 20-6. Defense ruled the third with neither team crossing the goal line and it was well into the final period when Mansfield found Gabe Van Vleet from 5 yards out to make it 20-12 after a failed 2 point conversion. Mansfield led the Pack in rushing as he piled up 171 yards and tossed for 26 more. Elijah Shears caught 2 of those passes for 14 yards. On defense Van Vleet and Michael Romero led the teai tackles while Gabe DeLong tallied a pair of tackles for loss. The Pack (0-3) will look to get on track Friday when they face Chippewa Hills (0-3) while the Vikes (2-1) will visit the CM Hornets (2-1) Morley Stanwood 28 Hesperia 12 After falling behind 14-0 i the first half the Panthers closed the gap by scoring twice to pull within 14-12 midway through the quarter thanks to a Mack Baird pick 6 which he followed up with a 56 yard punt return for pay dirt. The Mohawk offense kicked in again scoring twice to pull away and capture the win. Baird finished with 79 yards on the ground and another 43 on catches from Johnny Majersky. On defense River Roberson led with 10 tackles and Kile Pomeroy finished with 8. Hesperia now falls to 1-2 overall and will host Holton (2-1) in their rivalry game. It will be homecoming for the Panthers Kent City 30 Holton 12 In a hard played physical game the Devs struggled to get some early traction but it was their missed red zone opportunities that led to the loss. Late in the game Holton had a shot at pulling within a score of the Eagles but a missed field goal gave KC the ball and they drove down the field for the final TD. Coach Jados: “We are really close to being a really good football team! We are doing a lot of things right but we struggle to finish. As we go forward this is something we need to get better at.” Red Devil QB Austin Fowler was 13-20 for 150 yards and a touchdown adding , 11 yards rushing and another score. Austin Hawkins led the ground game with 73 yds rushing on 13 carries and added 3 catches for 68 yards including a 55y yard reception for a TD.. Dylan Cartwright led the team with 10 tackles Hawkins collected 9 and Jaden Israel added 8. Holton goes a tad north to take on Hesperia for bragging rights in their annual rivalry matchup’ Newaygo 1 Grant 0 White Cloud 1 Lakeview 0 A pair of wins for the Lions and the Cloud but neither came on the field of play. The Tigers and Wildcats were forced to forfeit due to concerns surrounding the ‘Rona. Newaygo (2-1) travels to Coyote country Friday to take on Reed City (3-0) while WC will head to Kent City to take on the high flying Eagles (3-0) Reed City 36 Central Montcalm 20 Big Rapids 27 Chip Hills 13 Grant at Newaygo Uhh. No. Outbreak of COVID caused the Tigers to forfeit this classic rivalry game that has provided the best show in the area for more than half a century Tri County at Fremont Hard to say. The Packers are better than their score translates and new head coach Carpenter is still instituting his brand of football handicapped by a shortened prep time. The Vikings look strong defensively yielding just a pair of TDs while splitting their games with a win over Newaygo and a one point loss to Grant. The Pack will air it out and the Vikes haven’t faced a team that throws the ball as much as Fremont does. Look for success for the home team to depend on the air attack and the defense playing like they did in the second half against Ludington. Hesperia at Morley Stanwood The Panthers played Kent City tough and could give the ‘Hawks a run for it. A sparse home crowd can only help Doug Bolles’s squad since Morley generally provides a spirited crowd. Holton at Kent City The Red Devils are undefeated but so is Kent City but quite frankly, KC has played better teams. This is not the offensive juggernaut Eagles of recent years but the defense is strong and the Devs will have to find creative ways to score White Cloud at Lakeview This is likely the best chance for both teams to get a conference win. Neither team scores much but both have seen scoring opportunities stalled by flags and fumbles. Reed City at Central Montcalm. Good matchup of the top teams in the Gold, both undefeated. Chippewa Hills at Big Rapids Two teams looking for win #1 Whitehall traveled to Fremont on Thursday afternoon to take on the Packers in a non-conference match up. Fremont scored first on a hustle goal by Marcus Klimek with 4 minutes left in the first half. The score stood at halftime with the Packers on top 1-0. Whitehall made a surge in the second half and it paid off with 4 minutes to play in the match. Yahir Gonzalez netted the game tying goal. Whitehall outshot Fremont 8-6. Joe Kortge made 7 saves for the Packers. Fremont moves to 9-1-2 overall and Whitehall moves to 8-0-1 overall. |
