On a chilly October 20 evening at the CSAA Gold Championship meet hosted by Central Montcalm High School, the Fremont Boys and Girls Cross Country teams captured Conference Championship Titles.
The boys finished 1st through 5th for a perfect score of 15 to win their 7th straight conference title. The following runners earned 1st Team All-Conference honors: Seniors, Nathan Walker, Josh Zerfas, Ben Paige and Adam Ward, and Junior Conor Somers. Juniors Brennan and Gavin Schuler earned All-Conference Honorable Mention. Nathan Walker has been awarded 1st Team All-Conference accolades for four straight years; Ben Paige and Conor Somers for three straight years and Josh Zerfas and Adam Ward for the last two years. Paige (1), Zerfas (2) and Ward (1) have received All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in past seasons as well. While not figuring in the scoring, Gavin Shuler, Nathan Johnson and Jackson Fair provided strong support, all finishing with impressive times and in the top fifteen of the field of 62 runners.
The Fremont girls won their first outright Conference Championship since 2015 (they were Co-Champions in 2018). The Girls won the race with 52 points, edging out Reed City who was 2nd with 59 points. Juniors Taylor Mater and Taava Johnson earned 1st Team All-Conference honors, the second time Mater has been so honored, while Leah Converse earned All-Conference Honorable Mention for the third straight year. Erin Norton and Emily Curtis rounded out Fremont’s top five finishers in their championship race. Elise Pfeiffer and Sierra Horton also turned in strong performances.
The JV boys also ran an impressive race taking control of the race and finishing in the first five places to match the perfect score turned in by the varsity. Freshman Johnny Christensen led the way followed by Henrik Quist, Sean Pettis, Gary Springstead and Colton Isenhart.
The next race on the slate for the Fremont runners is Pre-Regionals this coming Saturday at Chippewa Hills. Races begin at 11:00 a.m.
