Son nets 2, Briggs holds the line Photos by Tara Hefferan Newaygo 3 Tri County 2 It was Senior Night on the soccer field and the Lions were coming off a pair of ties and facing a Tri County team that had inched past them in the conference standings. And they came up big taking a 3-0 lead and holding off a late Viking run to push their undefeated string to 10 matches. Alexandra Son punched a pair of goals past the TC defense (assisted by Grace Painter and Jaxi Long) and Painter also found the back of the net for the Lions. The Lions possessed the ball well from the defensive line through the midfield all the way up to the forwards. Sofia Briggs once again anchored the back line, thwarting the attempts by the Vikings. Coach Matt Painter: “After battling injuries and absences that have left us short-handed, I was very proud of how our girls came together and played so well as a team. As Tri County made a late rally, we held tough as a team to hang on for the win. As a coach, what more could I ask for?”

Photos by Kacey Nelson Reed City 7-2 Fremont 6-10 In the opener the Packers held a one run lead with 3 outs to go but the Coyotes rallied in their final at bat pushing a pair of runners across the plate to seal the win. Jaxon Deur posted an even dozen K’s in his 6+ innings but timely hits kept Reed City in the game and a late run set the stage for their comeback. Payton Mansfield went yard in the 3rd and added a double in the game to finish with 3 RBI’s. Joey DeLong scored twice and added an RBI, Logan Nelson singled twice, scored and knocked one in and Brenden Maka also sent a teammate across the plate. In the nightcap Nelson put on a dominant plate performance with a pair of round trippers to go with a double and single accounting for 4 RBI’s. He set the stage in the 1st delivering a lead off homer and his second 4 bagger came in the 5th when the Packers posted a 7 on the scoreboard to put the game out of reach. Gabe VanVleet scattered 4 hits over 5 innings to get the win while Michael Baden held the ‘Yotes hitless over the final 2 innings. Morley stormed back in the 3rd to tie the game but the visitors rallied for 4 in the top of the 4th to forge ahead. Newaygo 2 Kent City 2 For the second match in a row the Lions soccer squad saw the time on the scoreboard expire with a tie score. The difference this time was that their opponents actually put numbers on the board. Jaxi Long found the back of the net and Grace Painter took a Connelly Hefferan-Nordlund pass and fired in the team’s second goal but the Eagles matched their visitors with a pair of tallies and the game ended with neither team taking a loss. Kent Ciy’s 2 goal output was twice the number of goals managed by the previous 8 Lion foes. There are currently 3 teams without a loss in conference play, Tri County, Big Rapids and the Lions. Coach Somers: On Friday, Ben Paige ran in a field of 36 athletes at the Shepherd Elite 3200. He went into the meet with a PR of 10:06 and was hoping to break 10:00. He put himself in a great position at the mile mark then held on for 3 laps before finishing with a huge 62 second last 400 to run 9:47.79 to finish 22nd and record a 19 second PR. The race was won by Corey Bowers of Cedar Springs with a time of 9:19.77. On Saturday, Nathan Walker and Conor Somers travelled to Farmington High School to compete in the New Balance Elite 3200 with 23 other athletes. Nathan positioned himself near the front of the lead pack and stayed there the whole way, getting boxed on the rail in the last 200, but breaking out in the last 100 to finish 3rd in 8:59.41 in a very tight finish for an 11 second PR. Conor ran well in the mid-pack, but fell off the front group in the second mile when they sped up and gaps started to form. He finished 21st in 9:24.33. According to track statistician and historian Jeff Hollobaugh this was the deepest high school 3200 ever run in Michigan. The race was won by Hobbs Kessler of Ann Arbor Skyline with a time of 8:54.42. Nathan’s time ranks him as the 20th fastest boy in Michigan ever in the 3200. Fremont 2 Beal City 1 Payton Mansfield and Aggie Wade Wilson went head to head in a pitchers duel in the opening game of the Fremont Invitational. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th when Jon Mellema reached on a single and came home courtesy of Logan Nelson’s hit. Joey DeLong then plated Nelson to stake the Pack to a 2-0 lead. The Aggies got on the board in the top of the 6th when Cameron Lynch tripled and Wilson drove him home but Mansfield got out of the inning with no more damage and blanked Beal City in their final at bat. Mansfield struck out 12 in the game and overcame 4 Packer errors to snare the win. Fremont 2 Comstock Park 1 In the finals Fremont faced Comstock Park and the game turned into another low scoring affair. The Packers got an early run in the first when Mansfield drove home Nelson who had walked, one of his three free passes in the game. Drew DeBlake shut down the Panthers through 6 ⅔ giving way to Brenden Maka who yielded the lone CP run and overcame some control issues to get the final out. The Packer defense played errorless ball in the win. Hesperia 5 Manistee 1 The Panthers continued their improvement Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Manistee in the 2021 Ken Smith Memorial Tournament at Hesperia. Fremont 18-2 Whitehall 6-9 The top 3 hitters in the Packer lineup combined for 11 hits,11 RBIs and 9 runs scored as the team unloaded on a Viking pitching trio that had no answers for the onslaught. Whitehall posted 6 runs and scored in each of the first 4 innings but they could not keep up with a relentless Fremont offense. Jaxon Deur tossed the first 4 innings giving up 5 scores but only 2 earned runs. Michael Baden kept the Vikes at bay for the final 3 frames. Coach Foster, while happy with his team’s offense, was likely less impressed with their defense as 7 errors provided opportunities for most of the Whitehall runs. Logan Nelson crossed the plate 4 times to lead the Pack while Joey DeLong drove home 5. The nightcap was a different story for the Fremont bats. They couldn’t solve Cayden Ritchue who went the distance for the Vikes scattering 6 hits and allowing just 2 runs but once again the Packer defense helped Whitehall along as pitchers Joe Kortge and DeLong saw 6 unearned runs cross the plate for the Vikings courtesy of 4 errors. Kortge ripped a pair of doubles and drove in a run. The split puts the Packers at 17-3-1 onn the season and they will compete in their tournament Saturday beginning with a 9am matchup with the Beal City Aggies. Lakeview 9-8 Hesperia 1-7 The Panthers dropped two league games to the Wildcats tonight. In game 1, Hesperia couldn’t get the bats going, striking out 19 times in the loss. They forged a four run rally to pull even with the ‘Cats going into the bottom of 7. The Panthers held Lakeview scoreless to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 8th, with bases loaded, a hit batsman by Hekman forced in the winning run. Hunter Billman had 3 hits, scored 2 R’s, and had 2 RBI’s while Braden Nielsen had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. The two losses brings Hesperia’s record to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the CSAA.
