Hesperia still searching for win#1
WC 17-12 Hesperia 1-1 Armoando Escobedo Michael Norris and Alex Sayer took to the mound in game 1 but were hurt by a sea of errors (9) behind them, errors leading to 13 of the WC runs being unearned. Sayer scored the lone Panther run on an RBI by Travis Kurtz. The fielding woes continued in game 2 and the Panthers have yet to find some consistency at the plate. Coach Grimard: “Our guys are working really hard in practice and are making big gains, but we still have some things to learn about playing winning baseball. We are still making too many errors to win games, but we are continuing to work hard and we are continuing to improve. Tonight was a matter of too many errors to overcome with only four hits per game.” Wolters McGowen and Cruzan pitched for White Cloud in game 1 scattering 3 hits while Reuther finished with 4 hits and scored 3 runs for the visitors The Panthers visit Lakeview Friday. White Cloud (11-3) will host Holton Friday.

Pitching, hitting return to Packers in conference sweep
Tuesday Fremont 10-17 Chippewa Hills 0-0 This time out Payton Mansfield didn’t toss a no hitter. He yielded a lone single to the Warriors shutting them out for 6 innings and striking out 8. And for good measure he came within a double of hitting for the cycle collecting a round tripper a triple and a single and knocking in 4 runs. Drew DeBlake rapped out a trio of singles, Brendan Maka doubled and singled and Logan Nelson crossed the plate 3 times courtesy of his teammates. In the nightcap DeBlake tossed the teams second no-no in a week as he blanked CH over 4 innings whiffing 9 Warriors in the process. The game was shortened due to the offensive barrage led by Mansfield who singled, doubled, tripled and collected 7 RBI’s as the Packers pushed their record to 16-2-1. Leadoff man Nelson once again scored three times Monday Packer Bats Go Quiet In Loss To ‘Cats Montague 4 Fremont 2 The visiting Wildcats got a couple of stellar pitching performances from Owen Peterson and Trey Mikkelson as they held the hosts to just 4 hits and a lone run in the non conference win. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Logan Nelson lit a spark with a double off Peterson and 2 batters later Payton Mansfield brought him home with a base hit but that ended the scoring for the day and Montague tacked on 2 more in the top of the 7th to help secure the win. Joey DeLong singled twice for the only other Packer hits. Lions, Pack battle to scoreless draw
Photos by Tara Hefferan Fremont 0 Newaygo 0 The Lion defense continued to be a dominant force on the field in their match against the Packers Monday but despite winning the possession game they were thwarted in their efforts to punch one past the Fremont goalkeep. The tie put the Newaygo record at 7-0-1 on the season with a 3-0-1 conference mark. The Packer defense got a boost from holding one of the top teams in the conference scoreless and Fremont now sits at 2-7-1 overall with a 2-2-1 record in league play. The Lions face a big test in Big Rapids (5-3, 3-0) Wednesday when they travel north to face a Cardinal squad that has tallied 22 goals in the last 3 matches while shutting down the opposition. Fremont will host Lakeview (2-5, 4-0) A few contests of interest this week
Our high school scholar athletes are playing full schedules since a belated return to action. With Spring sports taking a COVID caused sabbatical last year participants have taken to the fields of play with unharnessed enthusiasm. Do yourself a favor and catch them in action. Here are upcoming home games, meets, matches, etc. involving some of our local teams Soccer Monday Fremont at Newaygo 4:30pm The Packers have struggled with scoring and struggled with keeping the ball out of their goal.Shut out in 3 of their last 4 their bright spots include a win over an enigmatic Kent City team and another over Chip Hills, a team with challenges that mirror the Packers. Newaygo is currently in the midst of an exceptional run with a 7-0 record that includes 6 shutouts and a lone goal against while peppering the nets for 26 tallies. They have talent and a nice blend of experience and youth. Their ability to control the pace of the match and capitalize on opponent mistakes has led to an undefeated season thus far and assisted by a strong defense, Toth has excelled in goal. Fun team to watch with an enthusiastic fan base. Baseball Tuesday Chip Hills at Fremont 4pm The Packers (14-1-1) have burned through their schedule with a lethal combination of strong pitching and good bats up and down their lineup. And they have one of the best (and quite possibly the best) 3 sport athletes in these parts, Payton Mansfield. Coming off a stellar basketball season Mansfield took his place on the mound and at the plate and has been dominant in both spots. In a recent 3 inning appearance cut short due to the mercy rule he simply retired every batter he faced except for the player who took one for the team on a pitch that must have gotten away from the Packer pitcher. White Cloud at Hesperia 4pm The Panthers have had a rough start with a season interrupted by a quarantine so Coach Grimard’s youthful team is still dealing with early season adjustments. White Cloud has some punch at the plate and the pitching isn’t getting knocked around. Track Wednesday Lakeview at White Cloud 4pm White Cloud’s teams have been putting together exceptional seasons with a number of hardware hauling events under their belts already. This one is a conference dual and given both Cloud teams outscored the Wildcats at their Invitational and in the Mustang Invite so they should be in good shape to do well in front of a home crowd. We hear Lakeview freshman Emma Kosinski can burn it in the dashes but the hosts are strong in the relays and exceptional in many field events like the shot and discus where Reeve and Shepard’s main competition is usually each other On the boys side Lakeview could challenge in the relays but once again the field events will likely belong to WC. Softball Wednesday Comstock (just Comstock, no Park) at Newaygo. Lion hurler Kirk gets the job done on the slab and Swinehart leads a long list of hitters in the lineup. We know nothing of the Kalamazoo area Colts but we caught the Lions last week and they look like a highly energetic scrappy group of ballplayers. Pitching strong, defense struggles in sweep Photos by Jim Cherry Holton 9-10 Hesperia 7-0 The 2021 season has been a challenge so far for the Hesperia Varsity baseball team. With a young and inexperienced team, the Panthers started the season with two frigid March games against two of the better teams in the area, North Muskegon and Muskegon Catholic. After spring break the Panthers were shut down for two weeks due to COVID quarantining. With one practice before resuming their season, Hesperia faced off against a solid Holton team at Marsh Field Friday night. The team is making progress every day and that showed Friday night. After committing defensive errors early, Hesperia found themselves down 9-0. Once some of the nerves settled, the bats got hot and the Panthers clawed back into the game only to lose 9-7. Braden Nielsen threw well holding Holton to just 3 hits. Armando Escobedo pitched well in relief to hold the Red Devils at 9 runs. Offensively, Hesperia was led by Escobedo with 2 hits, Alex Sayer with 2 RBI’s, and Hunter Gudyka scoring 2 Runs. In game two, Travis Kurtz took the mound and held the Red Devils to 3 hits but gave up 6 runs. The Panther only managed a hit apiece for Kurtz and Sayer. Hesperia lost 10-0 in six innings. Hesperia (0-4, 0-2) will host White Cloud Tuesday with games beginning at 4pm. |
