On Friday, Ben Paige ran in a field of 36 athletes at the Shepherd Elite 3200. He went into the meet with a PR of 10:06 and was hoping to break 10:00. He put himself in a great position at the mile mark then held on for 3 laps before finishing with a huge 62 second last 400 to run 9:47.79 to finish 22nd and record a 19 second PR. The race was won by Corey Bowers of Cedar Springs with a time of 9:19.77.
On Saturday, Nathan Walker and Conor Somers travelled to Farmington High School to compete in the New Balance Elite 3200 with 23 other athletes. Nathan positioned himself near the front of the lead pack and stayed there the whole way, getting boxed on the rail in the last 200, but breaking out in the last 100 to finish 3rd in 8:59.41 in a very tight finish for an 11 second PR. Conor ran well in the mid-pack, but fell off the front group in the second mile when they sped up and gaps started to form. He finished 21st in 9:24.33. According to track statistician and historian Jeff Hollobaugh this was the deepest high school 3200 ever run in Michigan. The race was won by Hobbs Kessler of Ann Arbor Skyline with a time of 8:54.42.
Nathan’s time ranks him as the 20th fastest boy in Michigan ever in the 3200.
