Photos by Anne Pettis On November 4, three Fremont runners competed at the state finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. With 50 degree temperatures, no wind and a hard dry course, the ideal weather and conditions led to fast races with many excellent times throughout the day. Sophomore Linnea Paige represented the girl’s team in her second trip to the competitive Division 2 state finals. She ended up 58th in the field of 250 runners. She said she “struggled a little” but finished with a time of 19:26, about 14 seconds better than her time at the finals last year. 18:46 was the time needed for 30th place (All-State) in the girls race. Last year, 19:14 or better earned All-State honors. Senior Sean Pettis and junior Carter Sherman ran the boys D2 race for Fremont. Pettis placed 13th in 15:34 to earn All-State honors. Per Coach Somers, “Sean ran with the large lead pack through the 1.5 mile mark. He faded a little through the 2 1⁄4 mark then moved up again in the last 800.” His finish was a solid improvement over his time of 16:19 last year. Pettis earned All-State honors for the second time. It was the third fastest time in his career as a Packer which has seen him move up over the last two years into the top five of all-time Fremont bests per Athletic.net. Carter Sherman had to work hard in a large group with little opportunity to pass. He did move up 11 spots from the 2 mile mark in to place 89th with a time of 16:38. He ran the race in 17:16 as a sophomore. Coach Somers said, “I am proud of these three and the progress the team has made as a whole.” A few of Fremont’s runners, including Paige, will be competing next Saturday at the Michigan Meet of Champions in Shepherd. Coach Schuitema: Grant lost in 4 sets to Kent City at the Newaygo District. Our girls came ready to play and executed very well in set 1, defeating Kent City 25-22. Our defense was great as was our serve receive passing tonight, which has been consistent all season! In the remaining sets, we made more errors but we battled, and kept making effort plays. We lost the next 3 sets, 18-25, 17-25 and 20-25. We have really grown this season and I'm so proud of the girls - our record in our last 22 games is 15 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties. That is a strong finish and something to be excited about for the future of our program! Reese Gragg had 11 kills Alexa Obenauf added 8 kills Chloee Chase had 7 kills, 2 aces, 28 assists and 29 digs Madison Brooks had 7 kills Bella Welch had 30 digs and 1 ace Danica Gee had 18 digs Payton Bouwkamp had 24 digs and 5 kills Hailey Guerra led the team with 4 blocks Coach Atwood: The White Cloud was well represented at the MHSAA State Finals on Saturday, November 4. The last time Grant sent a harrier to the event Brodie was in the 7th grade. Good weather and good fortune to all our area runners. A multitude of good high school runners throughout the state will be spending Saturday somewhere other than Brooklyn. The thirteen of you coming from Newaygo County are not among them. Well done scholar/athletes. Well done indeed. From a Tiger to a Golden Eagle
Julie Ashbaugh will bring her formidable basketball skills to Cornerstone University next year as the Grant senior signed a letter of intent last month to take the court for the Golden Eagles. Ashbaugh has put together some monster games during her tenure on Coach Josh Delamater’s Tiger squad. Last season she filled the book posting 9 games with 20 points or more, 6 with 25 or more, and 2 games with 30 or more. After her selection as all conference last March Coach Delamater had this to say about his player. “Julie ranks up there with the top players in the area. In conference play, she averaged over 19 points and 9 rebounds a game along with leading the team in assists and steals. People talk about great shooters and great 1 on 1 players, but transition offense is never part of the conversation in terms of great offensive players. You would be hard-pressed to find a better player from baseline to baseline than Julie.” Ashbaugh will be the third area player in three years to sign with the Golden Eagles. Newaygo’s Jaylee Long is in her 3rd season at CU and sophomore sister Jaxi Long is competing for the second year. And this from Julie: Why did you choose Cornerstone? I chose Cornerstone because I felt like home when I was on campus. Everyone was smiling and talking to each other. I didn’t see that at every college that I have visited and that made Cornerstone feel so special. Also, when I was at the camps the coaches and players were so welcoming. I know that it is a place where I will grow in many areas, especially spiritually. Who is their biggest rival? Aquinas College What is your intended course of study? I plan on studying nursing. What are you looking forward to the most? I look forward to being challenged and continuing to grow in my faith. I am very excited for the support and relationships that I know will develop during my time at CU. I am very excited that I will be able to continue to play basketball at the next level. What are you most nervous about? I am most nervous about trying to balance being both a student and an athlete at Cornerstone. I know that both the classes and basketball will be much more intense and challenging. |
