From a Tiger to a Golden Eagle
Julie Ashbaugh will bring her formidable basketball skills to Cornerstone University next year as the Grant senior signed a letter of intent last month to take the court for the Golden Eagles. Ashbaugh has put together some monster games during her tenure on Coach Josh Delamater’s Tiger squad. Last season she filled the book posting 9 games with 20 points or more, 6 with 25 or more, and 2 games with 30 or more. After her selection as all conference last March Coach Delamater had this to say about his player. “Julie ranks up there with the top players in the area. In conference play, she averaged over 19 points and 9 rebounds a game along with leading the team in assists and steals. People talk about great shooters and great 1 on 1 players, but transition offense is never part of the conversation in terms of great offensive players. You would be hard-pressed to find a better player from baseline to baseline than Julie.” Ashbaugh will be the third area player in three years to sign with the Golden Eagles. Newaygo’s Jaylee Long is in her 3rd season at CU and sophomore sister Jaxi Long is competing for the second year. And this from Julie: Why did you choose Cornerstone? I chose Cornerstone because I felt like home when I was on campus. Everyone was smiling and talking to each other. I didn’t see that at every college that I have visited and that made Cornerstone feel so special. Also, when I was at the camps the coaches and players were so welcoming. I know that it is a place where I will grow in many areas, especially spiritually. Who is their biggest rival? Aquinas College What is your intended course of study? I plan on studying nursing. What are you looking forward to the most? I look forward to being challenged and continuing to grow in my faith. I am very excited for the support and relationships that I know will develop during my time at CU. I am very excited that I will be able to continue to play basketball at the next level. What are you most nervous about? I am most nervous about trying to balance being both a student and an athlete at Cornerstone. I know that both the classes and basketball will be much more intense and challenging.
