One In The Books Photos by Alexis Mercer Story by Ken De Laat Newaygo 57 Comstock Park 43 The Lions came out hot on both ends of the court dropping 18 first quarter points while limiting the Panthers to a trio of long distance makes on defense. The second quarter was more of the same and featured a pair of hail mary passes that Caris Nelson sent downcout to Logan Klomp who converted the layups. By the time the dust had cleared the teams went to the locker rooms with the hosts holding a solid 33-16 lead. But Park wasn’t done. After Josiah Long and Blake Kerr exchanged buckets with the visitors the Panthers went on a 12-2 run to pull them within 8 points. Coach Long called a timeout to regroup his team. The strategy worked with the Lions closing the quarter as Nelson hit a 2 and Klomp did the same adding a free throw to send the Lion lead to 44-31 entering the final frame. Russell Toth opened the scoring for Newaygo and Park responded with a bucket then got a stop. Nelson snared a rebound on the Panther end of the court and once again let one go full court to Klomp who converted. On the next Panther possession Nelson stole the ball at half court and drove in for 2 to jump the lead to 52-36 and ice the game.
Nelson finished with 21 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds, Klomp hit for 13 and pulled down 7 off the glass and Long finished with 9 points also grabbing 7 boards. Jarryn Schmitt and Blake Kerr each added 4. "This was a solid team effort,” said Coach Long, who showed a lot of confidence in his team, going deep into his bench early and often. Newaygo (1-0) hits the road for the next three games beginning with a trip to Oakridge Wednesday and then traveling to Remus to face Chip Hills Thursday.
