The basketball season is underway and we contacted area coaches for a little peek into what their teams look like this season. Newaygo opened Monday with a win over Comstock Park and Grant traveled to Ludington and fell short against a tough Oriole squad. On Tuesday Fremont is scheduled to open with a road game at Shelby and White Cloud will host Baldwin. Newaygo Lions Coach Jason Long Last season 13-10, 7-3 in CSAA, tied for second place The Lions return 5 including 2 1st Team All Conference players from last year, Caris Nelson and Josiah Long. Logan Klomp, Jarryn Schmitt, Jaxon DuChemin and Blake Kerr are back and will be joined by Hunter Yearsovich, Ethan Reyburn, Jordan Holm, Russell Toth, Anikan Nelson, Gage Sanborn. Team strengths: The Lions are athletic and play hard from tipoff to the buzzer. Team Challenges: Figuring out individual roles and rotations Conference Frontrunners: This conference should be very competitive with every night being exciting. Coach Long: “This year’s Newaygo Boys Basketball Team should be a fun team to watch. This is a team that plays hard and really likes to compete.” Grant Tigers Head Coach Joe Schuitema Last season 12-11, 7-3 in the CSAA tied for second place Key Returnees - Senior Lucas Swanson (1st Team All Conference), Sophomore Zaiden Phillips, Senior Oakley Obenauf, Sophomore Blake Rider, Senior Cohen Garrod Promising newcomers - Junior Sincere Hatch, Junior Zander Powell, Senior Kyle Cook, Junior Ethan DeLong, Junior Aiden Booth Team strengths - Shooting, Athletic, Unselfish, Biggest team challenge - Overall size, rebounding Probable Conference frontrunners - Big Rapids has been successful at every level for a long time and I believe they will reload again. Coach Schuitema: "The players have some lofty and realistic goals for the season. Multiple players can score and appear to be willing to share the ball. Generally speaking, we are athletic and ready to compete." White Cloud Indians Coach Robert Jones Last season 13-10, 6-4 in the CSAA Key Returnees: Seniors Kevin Strait (1st Team All Conference), Noah Robinson (All Conference Honorable Mention), Jared Watson, Jason Ruether, Landyn McGowan, Mason Cruzan and Junior Jayden Robinson Promising newcomers: Juniors Coleson Cruzan, Kaleb Canning, Jacob Zimmer, David Higgs and Bryson Night Biggest Challenge: Can we rebound with the bigger teams? Probable Conference frontrunners:Until someone knocks off Big Rapids they are still the favorite to win it all, but after that it could be a shootout. Coach Jones: “Last year we took a step in the right direction with our first winning season in quite a while, and a solid 6th place finish in the conference we look to build on that this year. We return four starters from last season and expectations are high for this season. Fremont Packers Head Coach Adam Bowen Last season 13-12, 6-6 in the WMC Key returnees- Chaz Miller (All Conference Honorable Mention), Gavin Richards, Will DeBlake, Ben Mellema Promising newcomers- Kyler DeKuiper, Redick Powell, John Vissia Team strengths- Experience, Defense, Size, Improved shooting Biggest team challenge- Unproven bench Probable conference front runners- Whitehall, Ludington, Fremont.
