Openers: Tigers Triumph, Packers Prevail, Comeback Clips Cloud
Grant 56 Whitehall 44 The Tigers got off to a bit of a slow start in their opening game as the Vikings inched out to an 11-9 lead at the end of one. The second stanza was a different story as Connor VanderWilt lit it up, draining a quartet of triples to help give the hosts a 27-19 lead at the break. The teams traded buckets in the third as Grant kept an 8 point advantage heading into the final frame. In the 4th Seth Schuitema fired in three from beyond the arc and the Tigers made their free throws down the stretch as the team grabbed win number one under new head coach Joe Schuitema. VanderWilt finished with 19 points with Schuitema and Carter Chase hitting for 16 apiece. Terrell Harris led the Viking attack with 12 and Ethan Mackenzie added 9. The Tigers play a pair at home next week with Shelby coming for a visit on Tuesday before Friday’s conference opener with Central Montcalm. Fremont 75 Shelby 50 The Packers opened their season with a convincing win over Shelby in the season opener for both schools. Fremont roared to a 17-8 lead after one before stretching it to a 15 point advantage by intermission. The break did nothing to help the Tigers as the Pack poured it on in the third to take control with a 25 point spread heading in the 4th. The uptempo contest saw Shelby try to neutralize the height advantage of the hosts by double and triple teaming interior players Logan Karnemaat and Calvin Miller leaving wide open shots from the outside as 7 different Packers knocked down 11 3 point shots. Logan Karnemaat led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points to go with his 5 blocks. Joshua Zerfas, Jaxx Miller and Christian Kennedy each hit for 9, while Calvin Miller, Braiden McDonald and Carter Moontallied 7 apiece. Jacob Visser finished with a half dozen, Julian Echavarria dropped in 5 to go with his 11 rebounds, Tristan Campbell had 4 points and 11 rebounds and Noah Christensen rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Shelby was led by Tyler Schouter with 16 points and Tristan Landis with 12. The Packers will hit the road next week with a Tuesday trip to Ludington then head north again Friday to face Reed City in the conference opener Hart 59 White Cloud 52 It was the season opener in White Cloud and the Indians built a 30-17 lead by intermission but the Pirates persevered and came back to pull out the non conference win. “We got out hustled in the second half,” said Cloud Head Coach Bob Jones. “ The whole team played pretty well, but we have a lot to work on.” Sam Venema led the team with 18 points while Steven Holt hit for 13 and Alex Doke dropped in 9.
