Newaygo battled their way past Central Montcalm then blasted past Lakeview to claim the District Crown Saturday. Newaygo 5 Central Montcalm 1 “Central Montcalm’s pitcher had really good command of his secondary pitches and it gave us some problems the first time through the batting order. Our guys do a great job talking amongst themselves on what a pitcher is doing and what they see coming from the pitcher and were able to adjust.” While the Lions were figuring things out in the batters box, Jarred Heideman was tossing a gem from the mound limiting the Hornets to a lone run and just 3 hits while setting down a dozen on strikes. Jarred had some of his best stuff on the mound this year,”added Coach Bomay.”He was dominating Central’s batters.” Newaygo 14 Lakeview 2 That left just the Wildcats of Lakeview standing in the way of moving on to Regional play and the Lions left no margin for error with a 10 run 5th inning propelling them to the win.The offensive firepower display was led by Brandon Sekach, Noah Cantu, Conner Swinehart, Noah Graff, Andrew Goodin, and Nick Simington, all driving in runs in the frame. Swinehart earned the victory on the mound for Newaygo, going five innings, and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three. “We had a great week of practice and the guys were all business today,” said Coach Bomay. “ We got production out of the bottom of our lineup today and they were very instrumental to our success” “The guys are not content with just a district title. We set goals at the beginning of the year and they are working hard to hopefully attain them.” “This has been a fun bunch to coach,” he added. The Lions will begin Regional play by facing the Mustangs of Northpointe Christian at noon on Saturday June 9th. The game will be played at Kent City High School.
