Team finishes second in Holton Invite Photos by Cassie Rickert At the Holton invitational held on Saturday, White Cloud went toe to toe with Division 1 Reeths-Puffer in the championship game. In the first inning, after one out, Mason Ruether lined a sharp single up the middle and scored on an error, for the Indians to take a 1-0 lead. Puffer put up a 3 spot in their half of the 1st inning, putting the Indians down 3-1 after one. Reeths-Puffer added 4 more runs in their half of the 2nd inning aided by a costly White Cloud error. White Cloud mounted a comeback in the 3rd inning with a leadoff single by Dominick Burkhart, followed by a walk to Mason Cruzan, and a shot to the fence for a triple by Mason Ruether to drive in 2 runs. Landyn McGowen then singled in Ruether. Christian Ringler smashed a line drive single to left field and promptly stole 2nd base, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. The Indian threat was thwarted by 2 straight strikeouts. RP now had a slim lead of 7-4. With good pitching and defense taking over on both sides the game ended after 6 innings with the Rockets taking the win 7-4 and capturing the title. The Indians were led in hitting by Mason Ruether with single, triple, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's, and Landyn McGowen added a run scoring single. Jayson Ruether was tough on the mound for White Cloud, going 4 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 walks and 1 strikeout, while allowing 3 earned runs. Nolan Wawczyk pitched the 5th inning allowing no hits and no runs. White Cloud captured the win in Game #1 of the tournament by beating host Holton 11-1.
The offense was led by Christian Ringler with 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI's. Freshman Reece Hewitt turned in an amazing pitching performance, tossing 5 innings, striking out 8 batters, allowing 3 hits, and 1 walk. White Cloud's record now stands at 6-2 and will return to action next Tuesday at Central Montcalm.
