The Fremont relay team of Colton Best, Adam Ward ,Ben Schmidt, and Nathan Walker combined for an 8th place run in the 4x800. And then there was a little matter of a 1-2 Packer finish in the 3200, a race we’ll let Packer Coach Cliff Somers describe. “If you were lucky enough, as a Fremont supporter, to attend last nights West Michigan Invitational (formerly the Chronicle All-Star meet for us old timers) and stay for the 3200 run you got to see a pretty special performance. Ben Schmidt (Sr) and Nathan Walker (Fr) placed 1st and 2nd, both with PR’s. Ben took the pace out from the gun leading the entire race. He pulled a pack through the mile at around 4:37, meet record pace, and kept rolling. The pack quickly started to fall apart after the mile where Nathan moved up into 2nd and started to break away also. Ben really ran strong the second mile slowing only slightly to record a time of 9:20.0 just missing the meet record of 9:18.7 (Guy Jacobson – Whitehall), and our school record of 9:19.74 (Riley Klingel). There was a lot of hype during the race as the announcer let the crowd know that Ben was on meet record pace. The meet record was set in 1979, the first year of the meet. Ben’s time is the second fastest run at the meet which is pretty impressive considering the level of competition there every year. Nathan ran a strong 2nd mile also to run away from the rest of the competitors to record a 9:31.6, a time that would have won the meet many years. “ All results can be found here - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/MeetResults.aspx?Meet=319654&show=all
