Wednesday Grant 43 Central Montcalm 32 (Girls) The Tigers ran their winning streak to 5 and stayed atop the standings in the CSAA with a home win over the Hornets. Coach Delamater: “It was another tough battle for us tonight. CM is always a tough team that gets after it and is well coached. We were plagued by foul trouble again tonight. Julie Ashbaugh, Natalia Rodriguez, and Jocee Pleune had to sit for long stretches tonight. The girls responded well and played great defense even though our Central handled our press.. Bella Welch and Ashbaugh did a great job handling the ball in the last four minutes of the game. Pleune scorched a trio of triples to finish with 9 points and Rodriguez also hit for 9. AShbaugh finished with 8, Alexa Obenauf scored 7 and Welch added 6. Grant (9-3, 6-0) will play at Chip Hills (1-12, 0-6) on Friday. Newaygo 59 Hart 48 (Boys) The Lions held the Pirates to just 3 first quarter points and held off a couple of runs by the visitors to capture the non conference win. Logan Klomp had the hot hand for the Lions, canning 20 points to go with a half dozen boards. Josiah Long hit for 13 while Jarryn Scmitt scored 8. Caris Nelson dished out 9 assists on the night and added 7 points. Blake Kerr also scored 7 and matched the number by collecting 7 rebounds. Tuesday Fremont 55 Montague 45 (Girls) The Packers made it an even dozen wins on the season with a hard fought home win over the Wildcats. Then hosts took a 19-6 lead after one and by halftime held an 18 point advantage. The Wildcats clawed back after intermission and entering the 4th had shaved the Packer lead to 7. The visitors kept chipping away in the 4th getting the margin down to 3 but Fremont regrouped and hit from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the conference win and remain atop the WMC Lakes Division. Coach Zerfas:”We survived a horrendous shooting night with great defense and creating 30 turnovers. ”Montague has improved a ton, you could see it on film, but I thought we could have put this game out of reach in the first half with better shooting and making our free throws. We came out with great energy, we just have to finish shots. We did have very balanced scoring with Mia Clemence 13 points, Riley Chase 12 points, Jessica Bennett 12 points, Taylor DeKuiper 10 points and Olivia Hansen 5 points. Riley Chase also had 11 steals. Mia Clemence had 7 steals and 5 assists. Taylor DeKuiper had 4 steals and 7 rebounds, Jessica Bennett had 7 rebounds and Katie Ackerman had 5 steals. Newaygo 33 Holton 21 (Girls) The Lions made it 2 in a row as they cooled off the Red Devils offense in the non conference win. Coach Thomasma:”The girls picked up from Friday and played defense with some intensity again tonight. We rotated well and tried to make it difficult for Holton to get good looks. We handled the press better tonight too. We don't have one superstar player but when the girls play complementary basketball like we have the past few games, we can be a tough out. Holton is well coached and has some experience so beating them tonight was a great win.” Naomi Schillman led the Lions with 9 points and 3 assists. Addison Goodin pulled down 10 rebounds to go with her 7 points and Kija Shultz collected 5 boards, 3 steals and also scored 7. Newaygo (7-7, 2-5) will try to make it three in a row when they travel to conference rival Tri County (2-12, 1-6) on Friday.
