Lions blank Warriors 8-0 Story and photos by Tara Hefferan It was a scoring bonanza for Newaygo Lions Soccer, as they hosted the Chippewa Hills Warriors at home on Monday, April 24. While the Warriors failed to fire off a single shot, the Lions sent in 39 shots total, with 20 of them shots on goal. The unrelenting attacks ended midway through the second half, when the Lions mercied the visiting Warriors 8-0. The Lions controlled the game from the first seconds, rarely turning over possession. Given their dominance, the Lions were able to experiment with positioning, as well as with passing and shooting. This was a fun game, with everyone getting field time, and Captain (and senior) Sofia Briggs earning the first goal of her high school career. Commenting on this milestone, Briggs said “It feels unreal! I’m so happy that I got the chance to score during my senior year! It’s definitely a goal I won’t forget!” Coach Matt Painter in post-game analysis said, “It was a beautiful night for a soccer game, and our girls stepped up and gave the fans a passing and shooting show. Our back line stopped each attack and quickly passed it up to the midfielders, who worked the ball up to our forwards. Everyone on the team was able to get good minutes on the field and demonstrated some of the skills they have been working on in practice. One of our 4-year starters even netted her first goal tonight! We now need to focus on a good practice tomorrow as we prepare for Wednesday’s game against Big Rapids.” Tonight’s victory was a full team effort, with the following players earning points:
The Lions are at home again this Wednesday, April 26 in a match against conference rival Big Rapids. The game will kick off at 4:30 at the Newaygo Middle School
