Photos by Tara Hefferan Newaygo 4 Shelby 0 On a cold and windy late Wednesday afternoon the Lions returned to action in Shelby and posted a shutout win over the host Tigers. Newaygo dominated possession in the match holding Shelby to just one credible shot on goal. Meanwhile on the offensive end Grace Painter busted into the nets twice as she curved in a corner kick and added a penalty shot, Connelly Hefferan Nordlund found net off a short punt and Madi Couch took a short goal kick and sent it past the keeper as well. All 4 Lion goals were unassisted. Coach Painter: "Our back line did a nice job keeping the ball on our offensive half most of the night and held Shelby to just 2 shots on goal. On our offensive end, our mids and forwards worked to pass the ball around Shelby's defense, which was packed in the box making it difficult for us to score most of the night! Our girls kept attacking and, even though it wasn't pretty at times, they found a way to get the win!" Newaygo (2-1) wil travel to Lakeview (1-0-1) in the conference opener for both teams.
