The Newaygo Boys and Girls Track team competed in Ravenna tonight in an 11 team Invitational.  Taking home medals for the teams:

 Fremont Girls
Coach Hamilton:
The girls continue to work hard and improve. They split last night with a win against Grant and a loss to Central Montcalm. The highlights of the meet were:
Alyssa Gustman and Melissa Maddox set new PRs in high jump with a 4’8” for Alyssa and 4’6” for Melissa.
Kendra Fowler vaulted 7’6”
Mikayla Slovinski a new PR in the 1600 6:45
Kennedy Christoffersen jumped 14’9”
Fremont Boys
Coach Somers:
This meet was a makeup date and therefore took place after the Conference Meet.  The boys needed to beat Central Montcalm and Grant to win a share of the conference championship with Big Rapids.  Despite being short handed the boys stepped up to beat both teams. This is the first conference championship the boys have won in Track and Field in many years.  I am really proud of how the boys competed this year.

Soccer
Grant 1 Reed City 1
Coach Gomez de Leon:
Reed City started off the game with urgency as they scored their first goal a minute into the game. Grant’s defense was caught off-guard and keeper Lilian Scott, was unable to react due to a crowded box.   The Lady Tigers had multiple attempts at recovering ball at midfield but Reed City had speed on their side which made possession and recovery difficult for our Tigers. The first half slipped away and ended with Reed City leading 1 to 0.
In the  second half started theTigers were starting to get frustrated. A foul in our box led to a penalty kick in favor of Reed City. Penalty kicks are nerve wracking to most but Tiger’s goalkeeper, Lilian Scott, loves the challenge. Reed City took the penalty kick as we held our breath on the bench and let out a scream of joy and relief when Scott, with great reaction, denied them the goal. The ball bounced off Lili’s hands and was alive in our box but the Tiger defense was able to clear it.
With 26 minutes left, a ball was sent to the right side of the field where midfielder, Delaney Cronk, settled the ball and started a run up the field. At the top right side of the 18 box Delaney took a quick look up and decided to take a shot that landed the ball gracefully into Reed City’s goal. This tied up the game and it remained tied to the end.

Baseball
Hesperia 6-8 Kent City 4-6.
In game one the Panthers scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning in a CSAA Silver match up.  
Hesperia racked up nine hits. Logan Balkema, Chris Stapel, and Hunter Billman each collected multiple hits and they tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Stapel led the way with two.
In game two the Panthers scored three runs in the top of the seventh behind the bats of Billman, Jacob Klemundt and Logan Pierson to sweep their first double header of the season. Billman earned the win in relief.  The Panthers improved to 4-10 with the wins.


Softball
Kent City 5-9 Hesperia 4-8
​Caragan Frees doubled twice and drove home 3 runs and Alyssa Miller tripled in a run but it wasn’t enough in the opener as the Eagles scored 3 times in the 7th to capture the win.
In game 2 the Panthers again held the lead but KC scored in each of the last 3 innings to gain the sweep.Frees and Miller each collected 2 hits.
Coach Bolles:
“We had an 8-3 lead after four innings and couldn’t close it out. My kids played hard and never quit but give credit to the Eagles, they kept battling and they pulled out another one run victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.
These are tough to lose and we did it twice today and it hurts. Hopefully we will get more mentally tough and if we get out in the same situation again, we’ll have learned from it and we’ll have a better outcome.
With the two losses we fall to 7-10 overall and 6-7 in the CSAA Silver...
We play next on Saturday May 11th in our own Ken Smith Memorial Tournament...
