Newaygo at Grant 72 times these teams have met on the field and discounting the forfeit during the wretched 2020 Covid plagued season they stand even at 36 apiece. That’s kind of incredible. The 90’s belonged to Newaygo when they ran off 9 straight over the Tigers. The previous 6 in a row were all Grant. Going back a bit more from 1954 to 1970 the Tigers beat the Lions every year but one. In 1966 it must have been some celebration in Newaygo when the 12 game losing streak was snapped. The Lions went undefeated that year. In this century the Lions hold an 11-10 edge. Friday the bragging rights will once again be on the line when they take the field in Grant for the latest edition of this classic prep rivalry. It is indeed the best show in town because it is The Season for each. I’m certain the celebration for the Lion win in the '66 game was more boisterous than the later one for going undefeated. Both teams are 1-3. Newaygo’s coming off a bruising loss to a white-hot TC team. The Tigers got blanked by Fremont. None of that matters. After all this is The Game. Oakridge at Fremont The current squad may not be as potent as the Eagle teams of old but a program that has been to the playoffs 27 out of the last 28 years is likely to always be tough to beat. Besides they just knocked off a solid Ludington team up in Oriole country. The same Orioles that ran wild against the Pack. It's a cliche to say the Pack needs to minimize mistakes and catch a break or two but its turnovers that are hurting their ability to put up points and the defense is spending too much time on the field. A win would be huge for Fremont, but it is going to take a really good game out of a lot of people to get there. Holton at White Cloud The Red Devils are struggling to say the least. Give the players a lot of credit. They take the field on Fridays against teams with a lot more firepower and they don’t back down. But scoring has been almost as big a challenge as keeping the other team out of the endzone. Not a great combination. The Cloud’s defense has struggled at times but should do well in this one. It’s in WC and the Indians have more than enough offense to get them back on a winning track. Hesperia at Shelby Since being edged 13-12 in the season opener loss to White Cloud the Tigers have been outscored 141-6. Granted those were three pretty good teams, but it’s safe to say scoring is an issue in Shelby. The Panther offense could do some damage here, but it won’t be easy. The three teams that rang up those 141 points possess a lot of offensive weaponry and Hespo hasn’t shown they can score with any consistency. And they’re on the road against a team hungry for a win. Tri County at Morley Stanwood The Mohawks haven’t won yet. The Vikings haven’t lost yet. The same will be true after Friday night.
