Lions to face Tigers Tuesday
Big Rapids 63 Newaygo 21 The Cardinals iced the CSAA title with their win over the Lions Friday night. The visitors' pressure defense presented some problems early but Newaygo was able to find some open shots that simply would not fall allowing BR to build a 17-5 lead after one. In the second period Freshman Maya Lathrop who has steadily improved as the season has progressed accounted for all 5 of the Lion points with a triple and a 2 pointer while the Cards poured in 24 points and hit halftime well out in front at 41-10. Coach Thomasma: "Big Rapids came out and obviously played really well tonight. They hit shots and ran the floor. They are undefeated conference champions for a good reason. "Overall, we competed and took care of the ball for the most part. We just didn't hit shots (especially early) and we just got too far behind. We'll regroup and get ready for next week and Districts the upcoming week." Grace Painter led the Lions with 8 points and 5 rebounds while Lathrop also finished with 8 points. Addison Goodin was tough on the glass all night pulling down a team high 14 rebounds. Newaygo (3-7, 6-14) will face Grant Tuesday in the Conference Playoffs before heading to Montague for District play beginning Monday February 27th.
