Two plays later Talen Reichert-Slater found an open DeKuiper who raced 89 yards downfield to deliver the goods and stake the hosts to a 7-0 lead after the Ben Mellema conversion boot. Montague answered quickly with a 5 play scoring drive that knotted the score at 7 where it remained until intermission. Then the Wildcat defense took charge. The Packers could not move the ball on the ground and other than the big play that gave the team their only point the passing game was also limited to short yardage plays. Khai Noordyk and Owen Hertel were limited to less than 2 yards per carry as the Montague line won the battle in the trenches. Meanwhile Montague scored a go ahead TD in the third and added two more scores in the fourth to ice the conference game The Packer defense spent a lot of time on the field led by Connor Pettis with 11 tackles. Owen Hertel finished with 9 tackles, Quin Farrell tallied 8 and Noah Hansen added 7. Fremont (0-4, 2-5) travels to Whitehall Friday to face the undefeated Vikings who are ranked #1 in the state inDivision 4. Morley Stanwood 20 White Cloud 6 It was homecoming and the ‘Hawks came into this one looking to get off the schneid after 6 straight losses. White Cloud was hoping to boost their playoff chances with a 3rd straight win. With Nick Chapin making his first start under center the hosts piled up 350 rushing yards while holding the Cloud to just 120 yards of total offense. White Cloud (0-2, 4-3) will return home Friday for their final conference matchup with Lakeview (1-2, 2-5). Newaygo 44 Chippewa Hills 36
The Lions jumped out to a 22-0 lead in what looked to be a possible blowout win but the Warriors regrouped and got back in the game. Newaygo was able to hang onto the lead and secure the conference win. Newaygo (3-3, 3-4) will continue conference play when they return home Friday to face Central Montcalm (2-3, 3-4). Central Montcalm 48 Grant 0 The Tigers were blanked on the road as the Hornets sent them to their 6th loss in a row.. Controlling the line of scrimmage throughout the contest CM piled up the rushing yards and shut down the Grant offense. Grant (0-5, 1-6) will host Reed City (3-2, 4-3) Friday. Mason County Central 47 Hesperia 0 The Spartans scored 4 times in the first quarter on their way to a dominant win over the host Panthers. Hesperia (0-4, 1-6) will play their final home game of the season when they host Hart (3-1, 6-1). Hart 72 Holton 12 The Pirates ran off 30 first quarter points on their way to a rout of the Red Devils. Anthony Boone led the RD’s with 56 rushing yards, David Addison gained 44, and Riley Pierce posted 42 to go with his 48 yards passing. Hunter Zang led Devil receivers with 28 yards. Holton (0-4, 0-7) will visit North Muskegon (4-0, 7-0) Friday. The Norse are currently ranked 6th in the state in D7. Grant lost a tough match against Big Rapids Tuesday taking the Cardinals to 5 sets on the BR home court before coming up a bit short in the 5th. The scores were 25-22, 16-25, 25-23, 20-25, 10-15 Coach Schuitema: “I thought both teams played really good volleyball tonight. It was a fun game to play in - we always appreciate it when we play against good competition because you get better when you do! Big Rapids plays good defense and they use their middles well. We did some good things tonight and saw several bright shining moments! But we needed to steady the course and keep it together a little more often than we did, as a result we missed some opportunities. We are still learning and growing!” Leaders for the game are: Payton Bouwkamp had 4 kills, 3 aces, 31 digs Madison Brooks with 7 kills, 2 blocks Danica Gee with 9 kills, 19 digs Reese Gragg with 4 kills Chloee Chase has 3 aces, 25 assists, 14 digs Bella Welch, 17 digs Jocee Pleune had 22 digs Grant’s overall record is 11-10-1 and they have a road match at Sparta on Tuesday By Ken DeLaat, N3 Sports Newaygo (1-3, 2-4) at Chippewa Hills (1-3, 3-3) A toss up. Both teams have beaten Grant and each have won games over one of the two weaker teams from the Silver. Both were swamped by Reed City and BR. The Lions lost to TC and Chip Hills will more than likely do so next week. It’s in Warrior territory so there’s that. They are also the only team since week 1 to put it in the endzone 3 times against the Cardinals. I don’t see either team running away with this one and have to give a slight edge to the Lions if it’s close late in the game. Unless they continue to be plagued with the crucial turnovers and penalties that have been their bane this season.. Montague (1-2, 2-4) at Fremont (0-3, 2-4) A season that had fans optimistic early on has not gone as expected for the Pack. They nipped a pretty fair D7 team on the road for one win. They also beat Grant, but so has everyone else of late. The O’s and Cards ran wild on the defense and while they played a tough game with Oakridge, turnovers and mistakes hurt their chances in that one. Not to sound too pessimistic but this might be the last good shot at hanging W #3 on the season with Whitehall and Manistee road games left after Friday White Cloud (0-1, 4-2) at Morley Stanwood (0-3, 0-6) Last year the Indians snapped a 13 game losing streak to the Mohawks. Chances are better than average that they will make that 2 in a row in that rivalry. While the Cloud hasn’t matched up well with some of the stronger teams, Coach Trice has done a good job with his squad and they have taken care of business in the games they have been expected to win. This is a game they are expected to win. Grant (0-4, 1-5) at Central Montcalm (1-3, 2-4) The Tigers are struggling. They haven’t won a game since their season opener win over a Kelloggsville team that has yet to come even remotely close to winning a game. Moreover they haven’t entered a fourth quarter yet with even much of a chance to win. This week they go to the hive and face the Hornets. CP isn’t Big Rapids to be sure but they ain’t Kelloggsville either. The Tigers need a couple more of those big plays they’ve scored on this season and hope the game stays close enough to give them a shot in the 4th.. Mason County Central (2-2, 3-3) at Hesperia (0-3, 1-5) The Spartans have lost 3 games to teams with a winning record They have won 3 games against teams that don’t have a winning record. Hesperia is 1-5. The Panther offense has scored one TD in each of the last 5 games and struggled to keep the other teams out of the endzone. There’s a winnable game left on the Panther schedule…but this isn’t it. Hart (2-1, 5-1) at Holton (0-3, 0-6) The Red Devils have been outscored 308-30. Even if they had combined all their scoring for the season into one game they still would have fallen short in each of their matchups. The Pirates have beaten everyone but the undefeated conference champ-to-be Norsemen. No contest. Hart moves closer to punching the playoff ticket they were denied last year. Tri County (4-0, 6-0) at Big Rapids (5-0, 5-1) Should be a dandy. Coach Butler has an exlosive team and will matchup with a Cardinal squad that likes to take control early and hold off opponents late in the game. Both teams have marched through their conference schedule to get here and ths one's for the crown. Interesting item: Since 2015 the games between the Vikes and Cards have been dicided by one score or less. 4 times the margin was by 2 or 1. Best game in the region Friday night and a tough call. The Cardinals have home field advantage but I'm going with the Vikings. By a touchdown or less. Grant 3 CM 2 Grant defeated Central Montcalm in 5 sets Friday 18-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 15-12 Coach Schuitema: “I was really proud of the girls for persevering the highs and lows of the games and continuing to fight for a win tonight. We showed some grit and mental stamina! Our next match is next week Tuesday at Big Rapids.” Overall record is 13-11-1. Leaders for the game were: Madison Brooks led us with 10 kills and 5 blocks Payton Bouwkamp had 8 kills, 3 aces, 21 digs Chloee Chase had 9 kills, 4 aces, 27 assists, 16 digs Bella Welch led in digs with 27 Hailey Guerra had 8 kills Jocee Pleune added 20 digs Kent City 3 White Cloud 1 The varsity girls lost a hard fought battle to Kent City. 23-25, 25-20, 17-25, 22-25. Hannah Cruzan led the effort with 8 service points, 15 kills and 25 digs. Jorja Baker's solid serving delivered 9 points. Gracy Holmes added 6 points and 18 digs. Jaden Gomez also had 18 digs and 9 service points. Jayla Perrin dished out 15 kills while Ryleigh Balke owned the net with 3 solo blocks. Photos by Joan Ludtke

The boys bested their 6th place predicted finish in the Jays division by two spots with a 4th place finish among many tough schools. Coleson Cruzan busted into the top ten with an 8th place finish in 17:17 missing his PR by 1 second. Carson Foondle ran the best race of his high school career coming in 17th in 17:51. Grant photos by Jamie Obenauf Orchard View 32 Fremont 13 The Cardinals scored twice before Talen Reichert-Slater found an open Jacob Burns who took it in for a TD and after a failed conversion the score stood at 16-6. It remained that way until the 4th quarter when the visitors tacked on 2 more TD’s to put the game out of reach. The Packers managed to get back on the board late in the game with Khai Noordyk busting in from 6 yards out but by then the game was in hand for OV. Reichert-Slater hit on 11 of his 25 tosses with Owen Hertel catching 5 for46 yards and Burns finishing with 3 for 45 yards. Noordyk ended the night with 84 yards on the ground. Connor Pettis (13) Kyler DeKuiper (12) and Levi Wimmern(10) each notched double figures in tackles for the Packer defense Fremont (0-3, 2-4) will host Montague (1-2, 2-4) on Friday in hopes of posting their first conference win. White Cloud 59 Muskegon Hts 8 Jayden Robinson tossed three TD passes and scored another on the ground to lead the Cloud to the non conference win over the Tigers. Nate Compeau was on the receiving end of 2 of those TD passes and Noah Robinson gathered in the other one. Lamdyn MsGowen scored twice on the ground and Lloyd Sebright-Johnson also picked upa rushing TD. On defense Ashton Graham led in tackles with 10 while McGown and Reece Johnson each tallied a half dozen. Coach Trice: “Muskegon Heights has been in a rebuilding process. We went there knowing what we had to do to stay in the win column this week and moving forward we were able to execute in every aspect we wanted in the game. With that being said, the Heights was the most fun loving, respectful bunch we have played in a long time. We knew it was their last game of the season, but they fought hard. The way they interact and show their love of the game has charged us up. They reminded all of us why we play and coach football. I tip my hat to them and their coaches.” White Cloud (0-1, 4-2) will visit long time rival Morley Stanwood (0-2, 0-6) on Friday. Big Rapids 37 Grant 13 An eerie fog settled over the field during the game between the Cards and the Tigers but it didn't deter the Big Rapids team who routed their hosts. By the time the Tigers got on the board via Oakley Obenauf’s run to daylight on a punt return they had already yielded three Cardinal TDs and a safety. Down 23-6 at intermission, it didn’t get much better in the second half as Big Rapids rolled to their 5th straight win setting up a conference showdown next week when ndefeated Tri County pays a visit. Grant, (0-4, 1-5) will travel to Stanton Friday to face Central Montcalm (1-3, 2-4) Shelby 48 Holton 6 The Tigers sent the Red Devils to their 6th straight loss Riley Pierce piled up 93 rushing yards and tossed for another 56 while David Addison posted 91 yards on the ground Holton (0-3, 0-6) will host Hart (2-1, 5-1) on Friday Ravenna 35 Hesperia 7 Skylar Stalbaum rushed for 96 yards and Brock Bolles tallied another 69 but the Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Panthers who dropped their 5th straight game. Stalbaum also led the defense with 16 tackles while Thor Klas and Michael Fenton notched 7 apiece and Fisher Spencer added 6. Hesperia (0-3, 1-5) will host Mason County Central (2-2, 3-3) on Friday |
