Tigers Clip Cards, Devs Return With a Win, Pack Stops Warriors, Panthers Get #1, Pirates Sail Past Cloud
Wednesday Grant 49 Big Rapids 43 The Tigers moved into a second place tie with the Cardinals with a big win on the Big Rapids home court. Coach Delamater: “I’m not sure how long it’s been since Grant girls got one against BR, much less at their place. It was all about grit tonight. We got up quick 18-8 after one but they evened it up at the half 21-21. Credit to their press and our bad shooting. Both teams struggled in the third to score and BR was up 29-26. We got on a run in the fourth to go up and then we’re able to hit our free throws to close it out. I was extremely proud of our grit tonight. The girls fought through the turnovers and the cold shooting to earn a great win. Chloee Chase led the Tigers with 15 points , going 8-12 down the stretch.Julie Ashbaugh hit for 10 and Jayci Hance finished with 9. Grant (4-2, 6-4) will host Central Montcalm on Friday Holton 58 Muskegon Heights 46 It’s been a month since the Red Devils have taken to the court and they made their return a successful one winning their third straight game behind a strong finish. The game was tight for 3 quarters as the teams exchanged leads and battled to a 38-38 tie heading into the final frame. Then the Devs caught fire taming the Tigers with a 20-8 4th to secure the non-com win. Ryann Robins shook off the rust of a month layoff and dropped 25 points on the visitors. Alanna Cregg hit for 9 points and Abbie Fowler dished out a team high 8 assists. Gianna Reed added 8 points 2 assists. Coach Jordan: "This was a close game for 3 quarters, but we were able to get our offence going in the 4h quarter, we are not a high scoring team so to score 20 points the 4th and bring home the win is a step in the right direction for us. " Holton (1-1, 4-2) will look to make it an even 4 in a row Friday when they host their rivals from Hesperia. Tuesday Fremont 45 Chippewa Hills 41 The Packers traveled to Remus on Tuesday to face the Chippewa Hills Warriors and left with the victory. Fremont held a 10-6 lead after the first quarter before an 18-10 second quarter built a 28-16 lead at halftime. This quarter was sparked by some spirited play off the bench, led by Lily VandenBerg's 6 points in the quarter. Six different players scored for the Packers in the quarter. Fremont was outscored 12-7 in the third quarter and 13-10 in the fourth, which made it a tight game in the final three minutes. 6-16 shooting from the free throw line in the fourth quarter nearly doomed the Packers. They were 9-23 from the line for the game, compared to Chip Hills going 13-15. Coach Zerlaut -- "We did not play our best basketball tonight but we found a way to win. We shot poorly and forced things on offense at times, which led to some poor turnovers. Credit to Chip Hills; I thought they played very hard tonight. We had chances to put the game away earlier with free throws, but didn't. Our energy was not very good in the first quarter, but I thought we really turned that around in the second quarter, which ended up being the difference in the game." Fremont was led in scoring by Haley Zerlaut with 13 and Lily VandenBerg with 12. The win improves the Packers to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in the league. They host Reed City on Friday. Hart 55 White Cloud 21 The Pirates have been tearing it up in the WMC thus far with Montague the only team in the league to truly challenge them so far. They are one of the premier teams in the region along with Newaygo, Kent City and maybe Sparta. White Cloud hosted Hart on Tuesday and got an up close look at the current cream of the WMC crop. Coach Wilk: “Baskets were hard to come by.. Abby Derks finished the night with 8 points. The rest of our points were spread out between the rest of our team. Defensively we had our moments, but we need to work on our offense before we play Friday.” The team White Cloud (2-2, 4-6) will be playing Friday? That Kent Cty team we mentioned above. Hesperia 39 Pentwater 33 The Panthers jumped off to a quick lead in the first quarter then held back the Falcons to nail down win #1. Coach Grodus:”We got off to a good start tonight and kept the momentum going long enough to notch our first win. I am really proud of our team and their efforts tonight. Emmett Tinkham had a monster night firing in 28 points and collecting 11 off the glass. Emma Joppich hit for 6 points. Hesperia (0-4, 1-5) will resume conference play Friday when they travel to Holton to take on the Red Devils Monday Montague 48 Fremont 38 Fremont got a lot of extra shot opportunities due to a good performance on the offensive boards, but shot poorly. The Packers were 14-61 from the field for the game (23%) compared to Montague's 15-52 (29%). Fremont was also outscored at the free throw line, as Montague went 14-24 and Fremont was 9-18. Coach Zerlaut -- "It has taken much longer than we anticipated but this team is starting to figure out how hard we have to play to compete at the level we expect of our program. Montague is a good team and we played with them from start to finish. We had plenty of chances to score the ball but just didn't shoot well enough tonight. However, we played the game the right way and gave ourselves a chance against a quality opponent. We need to continue to compete that way on a consistent basis." Fremont was led in scoring by Haley Zerlaut with 9 points. Kaitlynn Bennett had 8, while Jessica Bennett and Mia Witte each chipped in 7. Witte also tallied 10 rebounds. Montague was led by Kendall Osborne's 11 points, while Haylee Schwartz had 10.

To their credit the Tigers put up a better fight than the score indicates, but their shooting was on the chilly side for most of the night, a malady that can prove disastrous when playing Newaygo. Emmerson Goodin and Jaxi Long accounted for all 11 of the first quarter points for the hosts while Jocee Pleune and Julie Ashbaugh hit buckets for the visitors But it was the second period that opened the gap as the Lions went on a 17-3 run to hit intermission with a commanding 28-9 lead. Newaygo exploded out of the locker room with Kayla Fisk, Grace Painter, and Goodin connecting before Sara Arends scored to end the Tiger drought but the Lions defense kept Grant’s shooters at bay and secured the conference win. Coach Delamater: “You gotta give it to Newaygo. They’re long, aggressive and ran us off the 3 point line. Their pressure on the inside didn’t allow us to get the kick outs that we’re used to getting and that’s just a credit to their athleticism. Defensively I thought we did a good job. Just keeping them under 50 is pretty fantastic. My hope tonight was that anyone watching the game despite the score could see it was a heckuva battle out there” Coach Thomasma”"Great win by the girls tonight against a good Grant team. I thought our team defense was solid. Very proud of their effort and attitude.”
Goodin finished with 14 points while taking 14 off the glass, nabbing 4 steals and swatting away a pair of Tiger attempts. Long also hit for 14 points with 4 boards and 4 assists and Lily Swinheart took down 9 rebounds to go with her 9 points and Painter finished with 8 points. Pleune, Arends, and Ashbaugh each finished with 4 points for Grant and Jayci Hance added 3. Newaygo (5-0, 9-1) stays atop the conference standings and will head to Reed City on Tuesday. Grant (3-2, 5-4) will also travel north on Tuesday when they take on the Cardinals in Big Rapids. Tigers hold off late Lion charge, Schuitema hits for 36 Photos by Brittlyn Rose Photography Story by Ken DeLaat Grant 66 Newaygo 59 Bryce Decker fired in a triple to start the game and Seth Schuitema answered with a bucket and a 3. Remy Wells tied it at 5 with a basket before a Gage Cronk score would give the Tigers the lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the game. The visitors staked a 19-10 lead after one and by the time Cronk hit a bucket at the buzzer to end the half Schuitema already had hung 20 on the hosts and the Tigers held a 36-15 lead. With only 8 players suited up for the Lions it would be an uphill battle to get back into the game and the situation became worse when Decker went down before the half with an injury that would take him out of the game. But the Lions showed a lot of grit in the second half. Grant Harkness hit from distance to start the second half and with Josiah Long, Dillon Bazzett and Wells finding the bottom of the net they fought back. When Long hit a three to pull them within 10 the Tigers answered Sawyer Carr knocking one down and splitting a pair from the free throw line and Zach Barnett converting a pair the third came to an end with Grant still in control at 43-30. Long caught fire and the Lion defense stood tall pulling the team within 5 at one point, but between too much ground to make up and too much Schuitema they fell short Coach Schuitema: “I’m really glad to come out of here with a victory. This gym has been difficult for us in the last few years and we knew Newaygo was going to have good energy. They play a competitive brand of basketball particularly in their home gym. We wanted to be mentally ready for that and we started out that way but that second half was a little too close to call for me. Of course they made great shots but on our end it looked like we lost composure and I don’t want to see that and they know that so that's what we’re still working on.” Coach Long:”I thought the kids stepped up in the second half and played to the buzzer after the challenge was put out there and they responded well. I thought they showed character tonight and found something we can build on.” Schuitema finished with 36 points on the night Cronk hit for 14 and Chase Geers added 6.
Long led the Lions with 25 points, Wells canned 9 while playing some rugged defense while Dillon Bazzett and Harkness each hit for 8 points. Before the injury Decker soundly rejected a pair of Tiger shots in the paint. Newaygo (1-4, 3-5) will host conference co-leader Reed City Tuesday while Grant (3-2, 4-4) will welcome in the other conference leader when Big Rapids rolls into town Tuesday. Cloud sweeps. Girls Tri County 50 Fremont 47 Fremont traveled to Howard City Friday night to play the Tri County Vikings. Tri County jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter behind Emmi McNees's 10 points in the quarter. The second quarter saw Allyson Johnson score 14 of her team's 15 points, but Haley Zerlaut hit a three from 30 feet at the buzzer to give the Packers a one point advantage in the quarter and close the halftime deficit to four at 28-24. Scoring slowed down in the third, with the Vikings holding a 9-6 advantage. Fremont then outscored the Vikings 13-9 in the fourth, but couldn't get all the way back and lost 50-47. Coach Zerlaut: "It was a better effort tonight, but we didn't make shots at crucial points in the game. We fell behind early despite getting very good scoring opportunities. The biggest wasted opportunity was in the third quarter when we had closed the gap to two points at 34-32. We had three straight possessions with shots to tie or take the lead, but couldn't convert any of them. Then TC went on a 7-2 run to end the quarter and put us down by 7 again going into the fourth quarter." The Packers were led by Haley Zerlaut's 27 points and 6 steals. Khaila Noordyk had 8 points and 11 rebounds. Kaitlynn Bennett added 7 points. McNees and Johnson both finished with 14 points for Tri County. The Packers fell to 1-8 overall, 1-4 in the conference. They host Montague on Monday. White Cloud 51 Lakeview 38 White Cloud snapped a 4 game skid with a solid win over the visiting Wildcats. Coach Wilk: “Tonight we had a great team win. Defensively we were led by Carsyn Scarlavai and Jaden Gomez. They brought the intensity all night. On the offensive end we were very well rounded. Gaby Reeve and Carsyn both had 14 points. Abby Derks chipped in 12, and Kiara Edwards contributed 9. We really needed this win to build momentum for next week. I was very pleased with our effort tonight. It seems like every week our team is hit with some type of adversity, and this team has done a great job of battling through it. Next week we take on Hart and Kent City, and these girls are excited for the challenges that they will bring." White Cloud (2-2, 4-5) will be at home Tuesday when they play the Pirates Morley Stanwood 55 Hesperia 12 The Hawks sped out to a 23-2 lead after one and never looked back forging a 38-6 advantage by halftime. Coach Grodus: “A slow start proved to be our undoing. We struggled, as we have all season, with getting off to a fast start. Poor shooting continues to plague us. We will look to improve next week.” Emmet Tinkham hit for a half dozen points and Abby Joppich added 4 and Emma Joppich led the team in rebounds with 6. The Panthers (0-3, 0-4) will visit Pentwater on Tuesday Boys Fremont 57 Tri-County 39 Coach Bowen: “Tri-County played very hard and made it difficult for us at times offensively. We had a couple of runs late in the second and late in the third that gave us a good lead, and we were able to keep them from making a run in the fourth. Jordon McDonald led all scorers with 23 points. He also added 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Joey DeLong also had a very good game with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals." Their third win in a row, keeps the Pack a game behind the leaders in the conference race. Fremont (4-1, 5-4) will host Chip Hills on Tuesday Morley Stanwood 72 Hesperia 53 MS took a 21-6 lead after one and hit intermission up 42-18 but the Panther showed some bite and cut into the huge Hawk advantage with a strong finish Coach Worcester: “Our guys going into this game knew we would have to battle every possession from start to end. I’m extremely happy with our offensive improvement. I’m more impressed with the effort and attitude we had with this group. We had 3 JV answer the call up to varsity and they played outstanding. Junior Maddox Mosley (26) and freshman Ian Fox (16) combined for 42 points. Our future is looking bright.” Hesperia (0-4, 1-5) will host Mason County Central Tuesday White Cloud 49 Lakeview 37 The Cloud halted a 5 game losing streak with the win over the visiting Wildcats. White Cloud (2-1, 3-5) will host Kent City next Friday. Coach Jones: " Not our best defensive game tonight and we will need to improve on that if we want to play with Kent City and Holton. Taylor Bode had 19, Kevin Strait 11, Jared Watson 8. Christian Ringler had 6 pts and 11 Rebounds, Donavan Stevens had 5 to round out our scoring. " High School Standout Turned Collegiate Rising Star By Alexis Mercer Close to eight million students currently compete in high school athletics. Of those, less than 2% will become NCAA Division 1 athletes. Specifically in the sport of cross country, 1.8% of high school athletes become a team member for a D1 school (ncaa.org). Nathan Walker, a Fremont High School 2021 graduate, is one of them. After finishing his high school career a State Champion in individual cross country, the 1600 meters and 3200 meters, Nathan Walker had a big choice facing him: where to continue his running career in college? Purdue University was the lucky winner. “I decided to go to Purdue predominantly because of the guys of the team. I just felt that they were a great group of guys, and that has proven true over the past months. I also felt that I would mesh well with Coach Oliver. We share similar values in the running world,” said Walker. This past weekend at the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invitational, hosted by his home University, Walker set his mark as an asset to the team by winning the mile in 4:11.64. His first official race as a Boilermaker, Walker earned the win on the indoor track. Earlier in the year the team ran a time trial that Nathan said had a similar feel to it. “Admittedly I was nervous leading up to both races, but I’m sure that will always happen,” he said. “At the end of the day, running is running. I try not to add any more pressure to races than I would practice.” Words that show his maturity well beyond his years. But that wisdom and maturity does not equal cockiness or an inability to understand how exciting a feat this was. “After the race was pretty exciting. It was great to see the guys getting results. We had a really solid team effort, and I’m excited that everyone was putting themselves out there.” Walker red-shirted his freshman year on the cross country team this past fall, but was given the chance to run unattached at one meet late in the season. “It was pretty tough,” he admits. “Most of my season was just getting adjusted to the training/college in general. I was able to put in consistent training and learn quite a bit about myself.”
Making the leap from high school to college is a huge endeavor for any athlete regardless of sport. The pace, living in new circumstances, meeting people, getting along with new teammates, a new system of training, and last but not least the rigorous classes. Nathan took the changes all in stride and used his freshman fall to adjust. “So far the biggest difference between running in high school and college has been the focus on recovery,” says Walker. “In high school I felt like I was doing enough, but when I came here I realized that I could do so much more. So much of success in running stems from the recovery process.” His weekly total mileage during cross country season was around 60 miles. And as Walker explained, it has not gone up much during the indoor track season. Next weekend, Walker and his teammates will travel to Chicago for the Wisconsin Midwest Invitational. Purdue’s 2022 schedule can be found at its website: https://purduesports.com/sports/track-and-field/schedule/2021-22 By Ken DeLaat, N3 Sports Girls Grant (3-1, 5-3) at Newaygo (4-0, 8-1) Whaddya got Tigers? We had this one penciled in after watching the Tigers opener and seeing the arsenal of weapons they had on offense. Outside of a loss to Tri County in an odd, foul plagued, marathon contest last week Grant has been impressive on the floor peeling off wins in 4 of their last 5. But there’s that loss to TC, a team Newaygo dismantled earlier this week. And they haven’t beaten anyone with a winning record yet and the Lions at 8-1 certainly have a winning record. The Tigers will need Rider to repeat the pinpoint accuracy she put on display Tuesday and a few 3 pointers from Chase and Pleune wouldn’t hurt. It will be interesting to see how Ashbaugh does with Goodin, Painter and Swinehart in the frontcourt. She also had a big game earlier this week but Fremont isn’t Newaygo. Then of course there is Long, the consummate shooter who can take the heart out of opposing defenses and Fisk who is the absolute centerpiece of the vaunted Lion press. If the Tigers get hot they might be able to stay with the Lions but only one team has bested Newaygo and only one other team has even been within 15 points at the final buzzer. Fremont (1-3, 1-7) at Tri County (2-2, 4-4) The Packers have had a less than stellar start with a really tough schedule combined with missing one of their starters early on and struggling on the offensive end of the court. Noordyk has been a good addition adding points and a presence underneath but Zerlaut, one of their best shooters, has been attracting lots of attention from opponents and will continue to do so until someone else steps up and starts filling the stat sheet. VandenBerg, Bennett and Witte can score and need to get on the board early. Siple will be a lot to handle for the Pack and the Vikings are always tough at home, but they haven’t lit up the scoreboard either so if Fremont can hang with them through 4 quarters… Morley Stanwood (2-1, 6-1) at Hesperia (0-3, 0-4) The Panthers are looking for win #1 while the Hawks have cruised past everyone not named Kent City so far. The Panthers will give it all they’ve got but they’re up against too many horses to have a decent shot at an upset. Lakeview (1-2, 1-6) at White Cloud (1-3, 3-5) The Cloud has a shot at ending their 4 game skid but it won’t come easy. Despite their record the Wildcats have been in the game for most of their losses. White Cloud hasn’t scored more than 40 since 2 weeks before Christmas and haven’t tallied more than 20 in their 2 games since the break. Winnable game for the hosts but they’ll have to score more than 20. Boys Grant (2-2, 3-4) at Newaygo (1-3, 3-4) Rivalry game between two teams that have had an up and down season so far. The Lions have looked a bit out of sync since the break and while Osabawine and Schillman have provided some good minutes there have been times when the offense seems to evaporate. Whitney and Swanson will likely get their points and Decker and Schuitema should provide an interesting matchup if the Tigers keep their versatile #23 in the frontcourt. If the Lions stumble at the start as they have in their last 2 and Grant catches fire it could be a long night for Lion fans. Fremont (3-1, 4-4) at Tri County (2-2, 4-4) DeLong, Nelson, Miller and Richards have all been landing their shots and adding those scoring threats to having McDonald on the court has enabled the Pack to fashion a modest but impressive 2 game win streak. The Vikings will be tough especially since they;re at home but if the same Fremont team that took down Newaygo and Grant shows up in Howard City the Packers will remain just a game behind the conference leaders. Morley Stanwood (1-2, 4-2) at Hesperia (0-3, 1-4) The Panthers have averaged 25 points a game their last 4 outings. It won’t be enough to take down the Hawks who have scored just enough in their last 3 wins but a lot more than 25. Lakeview (1-2, 1-5)) at White Cloud (1-2, 2-5) Finishing has been a problem for Coach Jones’ team. And free throws. And scoring of any kind. Fortunately Friday’s opponents have also struggled in those areas. This one will likely go to the team who finds enough offense in the second half. Like I said neither squad has exactly lit it up recently but Watson, Bode, and Strait are among a few WC players who can get a hot hand now and then. Photos and Story by Mike Gesler Grant 64 Fremont 71 Newaygo County rivals clashed as Fremont traveled to Grant in a CSAA Gold Conference showdown. Both Grant and Fremont came into tonight’s game with similar records. The only shared opponent between the two was Sparta in which Fremont lost by ten and Grant lost by two. And despite the final score, the game actually went down to the last minute of play, The story of the first half slightly favored Grant. While Grant played their typical man-to-man coverage, and made it tough on Fremont to hit anything from any distance, Fremont took advantage of Grant’s defensive Achilles’ heel, and patiently waited out the open lane. However, Fremont played more of a press style defense especially against Seth Schuitema which previous Grant opponents have learned you cannot do. Guard Schuitema and another Tiger will score on you. Tonight that honor belonged to Austin Whitney and Lucas Swanson. Of Grant’s eighteen first quarter points, Whitney had sixteen; twelve of those points on threes. In the second quarter, Swanson picked up the tab. In fact, of the Tiger’s thirty-six first half points, Schuitema only accounted for two while Whitney and Swanson shared twenty-nine. This helped to give Grant a narrow halftime lead 36-34. The second half, well mainly the fourth quarter, however favored Fremont. Grant adjusted their defense so Schuitema played more of an inside zone role while still continuing their man-to-man coverage. At first this frustrated Fremont as the Tigers shut down the inside lane and made a quick six point run to start the second. But the Packers were not about to give this game up quite yet. Up stepped Fremont’s Josh McDonald and Chaz Miller. McDonald would almost single handedly keep the Packers within striking distance by the end of the third, and Miller had a couple perfectly timed threes that were dagger blows to the Tigers. So while the Tigers edged a four point lead going into fourth, they suddenly went cold only putting up eight total for the fourth. Again, the game came down to about the last minute of play. With the Packers and the Tigers tied up, and Fremont in double bonus, the difference was Grant’s intentional fouls to force Fremont to the line and conserve the clock. Four times Fremont went to the line hitting seven of eight. And with Grant unable to answer back, Fremont’s grit and never-say-die determination got the Packers a tough fought victory. “That was a gutsy, gutsy win from us,” stated Fremont’s Coach, Adam Bowen. “We couldn’t get shots to fall. They came out red hot in the first half making threes, but we kept fighting and Jordan came up huge for us, I think he had twenty-nine. I think he kind of showed that he is definitely one of the best players in our conference, and stepped up huge for us. We were able to just keep fighting, and to come back and get the win. Good win for us.” For Fremont, Jordan McDonald led with thirty-one points. Logan Nelson and Gavin Richards both had ten. Joey DeLong and Chaz Miller put up nine each, and Chase Rasmussen added two. Fremont will travel to Tri County on Friday before returning home to face Chippewa Hills next Tuesday. “That was a very disappointing loss. When we’re up eight, and then up ten, and sustained a couple of their runs, and still had a nice lead, I was pretty confident that we were playing a good brand of basketball that would have resulted in a victory,” shared Grant’s Coach, Joe Schuitema. “We can give Fremont credit for never giving up on it. The whole time they played hard, and did what they needed to do so the credit goes to them. Obviously, in our locker room, we’re very disappointed that we didn’t take care of the ball, and get ourselves excellent shots to close out the deal. So this one’s going to sting for a while.”
Leading in Grant’s effort tonight was Austin Whitney with twenty-one. Lucas Swanson finished with seventeen, and Seth Schuitema shot for fifteen. Zach Barnhart added five, Giovanni Fallador shot four, and Chase Geers had two. Grant will travel to near north rival Newaygo on Friday before returning home to face Big Rapids next Tuesday. Boys Tri County 60 Newaygo 40 Much like Friday the Lions struggled getting out of the blocks and the Vikings built an early lead the visitors could not overcome. Bryce Decker paced the Lions with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Jaden Osawabine hit for 8 points and Gabe Schillman added 7. Newaygo (1-3, 3-4) will look to halt their mini losing streak when they host Grant Friday while Tri County (2-2, 4-4) welcomes in Fremont. Shelby 71 White Cloud 39 The Tigers jumped to an early lead hitting the end of quarter one up 17-9 and they pushed that lead to 20 points by intermission. By the time the 4th began the lead was 34. Coach Jones: “Came out flat and never matched their hustle all night. “ Jared Watson hit for a dozen points to lead the Cloud and Taylor Bode also finished in double figures with 11. Donavan Stevens tallied a half dozen while Kevin Strait and Romeo Johnson each finished with 4. White Cloud (1-2, 2-5) will look to snap their 5 game losing streak Friday when they host Lakeview. Girls Grant 67 Fremont 48 The Tigers got their uptempo game in gear Tuesday shaking off a tough loss and riding some hot hands to the conference win. Coach Delamater: “You can see the difference when the rust is off and there isn't a whistle every few seconds. We were up 20-11 after one on some impressive shooting. Fremont was smothering the paint so we got some great kick-outs and (Jaycee) Rider, (Jocee) Pleune, and (Chloee)Chase all buried their shots. By the end of the 3rd we were up 53-23. “We played a great game defensively with 32 deflections and 14 steals. “ Julie Ashbaugh had a monster game dropping 20 points taking a dozen off the glass and collecting 5 steals. Rider canned all 6 of her attempts from distance and finished with 20 as well and Pleune hit for 12 points to go with her 7 boards. Haley Zerlaut knocked down 18 points for the Packers while dishing out 4 assists while Lily VandenBerg and Jessica Bennett each hit for 8. Khaila Noordyk battled in the paint and finished with 11 rebounds Grant (3-1, 5-3) travels 5 miles up the highway Friday to face conference leader Newaygo while Fremont (1-3, 1-7) travels to Tri County to face the Vikings. Newaygo 63 TrI-County-28 The Lions pounced early in their home den hitting halftime with a 20 point lead and cruising to the conference win. The victory keeps Newaygo atop the standings in the Gold. Coach Thomasma: “"Good win by the girls tonight. I thought we ran the floor well and we were able to finish better at the rim in the second half. I thought Emmerson had a great game tonight defensively and offensively. We got another tough game Friday against Grant that we will have to be ready for. Emmerson Goodin led the Lions with 22 points ,including 9-11 from the charity stripe, 13 rebounds and 4 steals. Jaxi Long fired in 16 points, grabbed 4 steals and pulled down 4 boards and Kayla Fisk had 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Newaygo improves to 8-1 (4-0 in conference). Tri-County drops to 4-4 (2-2 in conference). By Ken De Laat, N3 Sports Girls Tri County at Newaygo The Vikings win over Grant came as a bit of a surprise . They had dropped 3 in a row and were having a hard time putting up points and I was pretty certain the Tigers were going to score over 50. They didn’t. The up tempo offense of the Tigers were slowed first by a frenzy of whistles, then by subsequent foul trouble and finally by Coach Alger’s halftime adjustments allowing the Vikes to take the lead and hold off their hosts for the win. That being said, the Lions will be looking to keep the game moving at their pace and it will be interesting to see how the Vikings handle the Newaygo pressure. Stopping Siple will be in the game plans for the hosts but more importantly they need to dictate the pace. The Lions have averaged over 60 a game the last 3 outings and are at home where it has been a long time since they’ve not celebrated at game’s end. TC would need a lot of things to go their way to grab one here but the Lions would be wise to be cautious about this one. Grant at Fremont As stated above the Tigers loss was a surprise. This time they head for Fremont to face a Packer team that has struggled to score as well as handle the press. Noordyk has found a place on this team and showed some skills against the Lions and Bennett is beginning to get back to full strength following an injury. Despite a few growing pains as a team, the Tigers have a lot of talent on the court and on the bench. If allowed to utilize their style of fast paced play they will be tough to stop. Wednesday Shelby at White Cloud The Cloud is home for the first time in a month. The Tigers will present a challenge to Coach Wilk’s team but they are not the buzz saw that Morley is. The hosts need some offense. They have Scarlavai back which will help immensely on both ends of the court but points have been hard to come by and that doesn’t bode well for wins. By the way, Shelby actually had a one point halftime lead over defending Gold Champ Newaygo in the season opener. They ended up losing by 21, but hey, it was a lead. Boys Newaygo at Tri County After a disastrous first quarter the Lions settled in last Friday in Fremont. They didn’t win and never really got close but they didn’t lose any ground and we saw some players like Osawabine and Bazzett (Kody) help provide some offensive firepower against an inspired Packer squad. The Vikes tend to give up a bunch of points and haven’t fared well against the tougher teams on their schedule thus far. Decker should have a big night in the paint but seeing the other Lions putting numbers in the book would be a good sign going forward. Fremont at Grant Last Friday the Packers seemed to put it all together in their win over the Lions. Of course staking a 20 point lead after one period certainly can help boost the confidence level of your players. In a rare occurrence, a foul plagued McDonald was not among the top three scorers for Fremont. Hanshue, Nelson and DeLong were the hot hands from the field and should they and the others who tallied on the night keep piling up some stats the Packers will be a tough game on anyone’s schedule going forward. The Tigers have scoring machine Schuitema (1053 and counting) but Whitney, Fallador, Carr and others can catch fire as well. Should be a good game as both teams need the win to stay a game behind Reed City and BR who both are likely to remain undefeated in the conference after Tuesday’s games. White Cloud at Shelby A really tough road game for Coach Jones’ team as the Tigers have won three in a row with timely shooting and rugged defense. The Cloud nearly grabbed a road win over Morley last Friday and would have if more free throws would have fallen. To take this one they are likely to need some big games out of their starters, refrain from foul trouble and hit their free throws. Then hope it’s enough. Montague at Holton Montague started with 3 wins then dropped a rivalry game to Whitehall and got clipped by N. Muskegon in OT. The Devils are undefeated and at home and have Monette on their team. This one will likely be their toughest test thus far this season and the Wildcats will give Holton fans a glimpse at the basketball played in the WMC the Devs are slated to join next year. |
