Ragtime Pianist Bob Milne at the Dogwood Center on June 16
World renowned “Boogie Woogie” ragtime pianist Bob Milne will be performing on the Dogwood Center main stage on Friday, June 16, at 7:30 p.m.
Milne, from Lapeer, Michigan, has been recorded by the Library of Congress, played at Bill Gates’ private club in Palm Springs, and for the past president George Bush. He also has performed in venues around the world including Japan, Ireland and Kenya.
Bob’s enthusiasm is contagious; he loves to share his knowledge, and is excited about keeping ragtime music alive. He is regarded as an American Treasure and as a recording artist he has produced 13 solo piano recordings to date which cover his wide range of playing styles, from the sweet and melodic to the highly rhythmic and hard-driving. He has composed over 40 piano rags, a ragtime waltz with variations, a trumpet concerto, a flute suite and a violin suite. The Library of Congress has collected memorabilia and made a film of a day in his life to be stored for posterity as part of the American Music Project.
This main stage concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $5 children 18 and under. Tickets are available online at www.dogwoodcenter.com, at the Dogwood Box Office, or at NCCA-Artsplace in downtown Fremont.

Book Review: Room
By Alexis Mercer
Let me start with a correction. I made an error in my first book review. I wrote that I am part of a book club, and that it “isn’t like your mom’s book club.” Which as a generalization works just fine from what I have heard about many book clubs. But my Mom reads my articles, apparently. Because I was made aware that MY Mom’s book club is just as fantastic and progressive and fun as my own. Sorry, Mom (and all her book club ladies, too). I stand corrected. And I will try to prevent further generalizations that get me in trouble. Oops.
Having said that, this month’s book was chosen on April 24. And I put off starting it until May 27th. Before I explain why, let me say that I am the only member of Book Club who has read every book since we started. I’m not throwing stones here, but everyone else has missed at least one book for various reasons. I read the books. So for me to even consider not reading one was completely out of character.
But this book scared me. I don’t read horror books. And I was worried this would leave me with nightmares due to its realistic, horrific plot line.

We are down to the final day before the first of that trio of remarkable three day respites from the real world arrives to welcome in the summer season in the Mitten.

Granted we reside in a 4 season paradise with enough variety of meteorological mayhem to maintain interest among even the most discriminating of weather watchers. What’s more, contained within the dramatic shift of climatic conditions is the way our citizens...
Megan Again: The Tooth Of The Matter
By Megan Wirts
When I was 9 years old I busted out my front tooth. It was my adult tooth.
I had just gotten it a couple years before when it arrived a while after its smaller predecessor had become tooth fairy fodder so it was kind of bummer because it was so new. It happened at my grandparent’s house, in their basement while I was playing with my cousin.
My grandparents lived on a dairy farm at the time and I loved being there. There were always so many fun things to do. You could climb trees or play in the barns. You could watch the cows being milked and best of all...

Friday night baseball under the lights in Fremont.
The Packers and Red Devils take to the field in a special game to honor the memory of the late FHS student Cam Beattie who passed away from accidental injuries two years ago.
If you are a fan of baseball there is nothing like an evening of well played high school ball to whet the appetite for the game. The experience holds no comparison to the limitations inherent in watching it on TV and while the performers might fall far short of the abilities of their...
Stage Door Delivers 'Doublewide, Texas' This Weekend
Story and photos by Tracy Kehr
In this hilarious, fast-paced comedy, the inhabitants of one of the smallest trailer parks in Texas—four doublewides and a shed—are thrown for a loop when they realize the nearby town of Tugaloo is determined to annex them.
And it’s not as if they don’t already have enough to deal with.
Joveeta Crumpler, played by Pam Bennett has had it up to here, having been passed over *again* for a promotion at work. On top of this, she has an ongoing battle to keep her feisty mother, Caprice, played by Kathy McFarlane, out of the local bar and worries that her good-ol’-boy brother, Baby Crumpler, played by Denise Gray is taking his participation in a womanless beauty pageant *way* too seriously.
Joveeta’s big-hearted best friend, Georgia Dean Rudd, played by Beverly Guikema is struggling to keep her diner and finances afloat, but she just can’t...
