Fraught filled Friday for felines as Lions, Tigers, & Panthers lose big
Fremont 38 Orchard View 16 The Pack got back on the winning track with a hard fought win on the road Friday night. At nearly the halfway point of the first quarter Justin Dirheimer capped a Packer drive with a 12 yard run into the endzone. Michael Romero took the hand off on the conversion and busted in to put the Packers on top 8-0. Talen Reichert-Slater was calling the signals for the visitors and found Gabe Curtice for a 20 yard score early in the second. OV answered with a 6+2 to make it 14-8 but Dirheimer struck again before the half with a 9 yard run and Kyler DeKuiper took it in for the conversion. The teams hit intermission with Fremont up 22-8. The Cardinals came out of the half and put together a drive that once again pulled them within 6 at 22-16 but it was the last time they’d see the endzone while Owen Hertell broke free for a 62 yard sprint and later Dirheimer got the hat trick as he scored for the third time on the night and punctuated a solid performance with a 2 point conversion run. Coach Hudson: “Last night's game was great for us to get back on the winning track and get our first win in the WMC. Our defensive effort was great again tonight. We had to play disciplined football to shut down an offense like OVs and I thought we did a nice job of that. Offensively we began to get things rolling on the ground again. Talen also gave us another dimension through the air and was efficient with our pass attempts. We have some more work to do to clean up some of our mental errors (getting 3 TDs called back due to penalties). Overall, I am proud of the way our kids are battling and the effort they are giving day in and day out. They are a fun group to coach and respond well to coaching!” Fremont (1-2, 4-2) will travel to Montague (1-2, 2-4) next week, their fourth straight road game while OV (0-3, 0-6) will face a likely to be testy team from Oakridge (3-1, 5-1) Reed City 62 Newaygo 17 In a dominant offensive showing the Coyotes ran to a 48-0 lead by halftime and cruised to the conference win over the Lions. Reed City runners amassed over 300 yards and 7 different players found the endzone. Meanwhile the Coyote defense kept the Lions quiet most of the game. With rushing yards at a premium Newaygo went to the air as Blake Kerr tossed for 13 1 yards hitting favorite target Dyllan Bazzette for 103 of them. Kerr and Porter Slominski tallied a 6 pack of tackles apiece to lead the defense. Newaygo (1-3, 2-4) will welcome in Chip Hills (1-3, 2-4) and Reed City (4-1, 5-1) takes on unbeaten Silver champ Kent City (3-0, 6-0) Big Rapids 47 Grant 0 The Tigers held the potent Cardinal offense to a field goal in the first quarter but then BR QB Wil Strickler heated up, running for a TD and passing for 2 more in the second. The hosts added a safety when Oakley Obenauf, who was dodging Cardinals in his backfield all night, took a sack in the endzone and halftime came with BR up 26-0 . Strickler struck twice more in the air and the Cards later added a rushing TD to the rout. Grant (1-3, 1-5) returns home next week to face Central Montcalm (0-4, 1-5). Big Rapids (3-1, 4-2) will head south to Howard City for a showdown with the TC Vikings.
