Coach Zerfas: “We lost in very frustrating fashion tonight in overtime 63-60 when Keonte Barnes hit a 35 foot shot at the buzzer to win. We had the ball with 12 seconds to go and called timeout. With 7 seconds to go we got the match-up and play we wanted with Braiden McDonald at the top. He attacked the basket but had his legs taken out by a player coming over to help, knocking him to the ground. McDonald lost the ball as he was knocked to the ground, there was no call, they passed up to Barnes who hit the long shot to win. It;s very hard to ref a game in real time, but this one was obvious. The video clearly shows his legs getting taken out 20 feet from the basket as the help defender rushes towards him and takes out his legs knocking him down. Orchard View played extremely well and ended our 17 game home winning streak dating back for over 2 years.” Barnes finished with 30 points. Those who were able to attend were honored with team photos and plaques that stated "Welcome Home" and the years of their State Championship winning teams. Current Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Nate Thomasma read aloud some notable statistics pertaining to these two teams. One of which was that not a single player on the team was listed as above the height of 5'7". Often, especially come tournament time, they were playing against girls well over 6'0". Newaygo Girls 54 Chippewa Hills 33 Newaygo Boys 51 Chippewa Hills 38 Though the last time both the boys and girls Newaygo Varsity teams met Chippewa Hills, they came away with large margins of victory, an opponent is never to be taken for granted. Sometimes those teams who were easily defeated the first time around find a way to change the story. Newaygo Lady Lions made sure that was not the case right from tipoff. Lightning fast passing on offense, fast feet on defense and teamwork contributed to a dominant defeat of the Warriors. Jaylee Long led the Lions with 15 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Jaxi Long had 11 points. Kendall Mathis chipped in 6 points and 6 rebounds. Newaygo led at the half 35-10. Second quarter was the difference where the Lions outscored the Warriors 18-2, said Coach Thomasma. "On a night where we honored the 1984-1985 and 1985-1986 State Championship teams, I thought the girls played really well. We jumped on them early and were able to maintain the lead and get a good victory." The Newaygo boys did not have the same fast start as the girls, but still managed to take a lead and gain as the game went on. The first quarter, Newaygo was outscored 9-10 by the Warriors. It took some finagling by Coach Barrette with the lineup to get a combination of guys on the floor that clicked. In the second quarter, the Lions outscored Chip Hills 13-10. After halftime, Newaygo didn't look back. The third quarter proved vital to the Lions' success, outscoring their opponents 19-11. They finished off with a 4th quarter point victory of 10-7. Senior Francisco Rios led the Lions with 14 points. Noah Painter added 10 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Coach Barrette said of the game, "Happy to be able to come out with a win tonight after not playing for 10 days." Story and photos by Mike Gesler Grant 75 Central Montcalm 51 If you were not in the gym at the Grant Middle School for tonight’s game against Central Montcalm, you missed a game that will certainly go down in Grant basketball lore. Central Montcalm and Grant met early in the season with Central Montcalm winning by a two point margin. Since that game, Grant has been out to prove that the team they were then is not the same team they are today. However, Central Montcalm, who is sitting at the number two spot in the conference, has shown that they are no slouch of a team either. Central Montcalm has won their last four games, and have only lost two on the season. Grant, for their part, has won four of their last five games only narrowing losing to Fremont. The first half of play was everything this game hyped. Two physical and athletic teams that would scrap tooth and nail for every point earned. Central Montcalm’s Trey Chapin put the Hornets on the board first followed by Grant’s Elliot Butchart to even things out. Grant would go on to draw their lead out by six, only to see Central Montcalm whittle that lead away and hold two over Grant. But lead changes would not be held long. In fact the Tigers and the Hornets exchanged leads eight times, six of those in the second period, before the first half buzzer sounded. When it did, it was Grant that went into the locker room as the first half victors by a very slim two points at thirty-three to Central Montcalm’s thirty-one. The third quarter started right where the first half left off. Central Montcalm’s Gunner Hill put up two to tie the game, and then another two to take the lead only for Grant to tie the score. For the next four minutes, this would be a repeated theme. Then, with about four minutes left in the quarter, Grant would break that theme…well mainly Carter Chase and Seth Schuitema. The duo started a points scoring clinic that would last the remainder of the third quarter and continue for half the fourth. For nearly eight minutes, the equivalent of one quarter, the Tigers held the Hornets scoreless while Chase and Schuitema combined for twenty points with Brett Long adding two of his own for a twenty-two point Grant run. By the time Central Montcalm’s Trey Chapin ended Grant’s spectacular eight minute performance, it was too little too late. There was nothing much left for the Hornets. Both teams pulled their starters, and gave their bench personnel some game experience.
“I’m really excited about beating a real good Central Montcalm team, and obviously tying them for second place is a big deal,” stated Grant’s coach, Joel Schuitema. “I think we played really tough against a team that plays tough. They’re physical, they’re athletic, they work hard, and we were able to match that tonight.” Carter Chase put up twenty-seven points tonight, with Seth Schuitema close behind with twenty-two points. Brett Long shot for eleven points. Also helping in the Tiger’s win was Orion Evans (5), Elliot Butchart (4), Diego Krepps (3), Gage Burrows (2), and Diesel Rose (1). Grant goes on the road for two games beginning with Morley Stanwood on Tuesday night. Story and photos by Mike Gesler Central Montcalm 46 Grant 38 The last time Grant met Central Montcalm it was early in the season, and the Tigers scored their first win in a narrow two point victory. Since the winter break, however, the Hornets have won four of their last six while the Tigers have dropped five of their last six. Hoping to end a four game losing streak, Grant knew that they could certainly beat Central Montcalm, but doing so would require stopping a real good team. During the first quarter, it was evident that neither team was going to make this an easy game for the other. Central Montcalm’s London Eldridge scored first only to be quickly answered by Jaycee Rider of Grant. The two teams went tit-for-tat but two three’s by Brielle Collins and one from Anna Loew of the Hornets gave Central Montcalm a six point advantage at the end of the first. The second quarter started out in favor of the Hornets. Collins again knocked down another three only this time Grant would make sure that the Hornets would not have another look for three for the remainder of the game. And just when it appeared that Central Montcalm might run away with this game, Grant found a way to stop the hemorrhaging and bring the game back within striking distance. By the time the buzzer sounded on the second quarter, of the twenty-six points scored during the quarter, Central Montcalm only edged Grant by two and went into the locker room with a twenty to twenty-eight advantage. The third quarter was rough for both teams. Central Montcalm was determined to hold their lead, Grant was resolute to close that eight point gap, and neither team was willing to concede any ground. So when the dust settled, Central Montcalm only added one point to their margin going into the final quarter. The final quarter looked like the pendulum might swing back to Grant’s advantage. The Tigers managed to hold the Hornets pointless for five minutes while at the same time chip away at theirlead. With three minutes left in the game, Grant had narrowed the score down to a three point game. Central Montcalm called a time out, and that was enough to break the momentum hold that Grant had. The Hornets came out of that time out with a seven point run. There was not much Grant could do after that as they lost this one in a gritty battle.
“Central Montcalm was really good, and we made some mistakes at the end that kind of cost us,” stated Grant’s coach, Paige Paulsen. “We fought harder then we have, we played better then we have; tonight we just ran into a good team. If we keeping going on this way, it’s going to be a good end of the year.” Leading in tonight’s effort for the Tigers was Kirstyn Throop with ten points. Trinity Swanson, Jaycee Rider, and Kassidy Doornbos each put up eight, and Savannah Passage also helped with four. The Tigers will go on the road for their next two games starting with Morley Stanwood on Tuesday night. Packers sweep Coyotes; Panthers, Devs split; Eagles clip Cloud twice
Girls Fremont 41 Reed City 19 The Packers endured some lengthy scoring droughts with stifling defense in this game, leading 10-6 after one quarter, and 18-8 at the half, before a third quarter run put them ahead 33-13. The Packers outscored Reed City 8-6 in the last period to set the final score at 41-19. Paige Vandenberg and Kaitlynn Bennett led a balanced scoring attack with 8 points apiece while Calla Miller knocked down 7. Allison Duddles led the Coyotes with 9 points. The win improves the Packers' overall record to 9-4, 8-0 in the conference and they travel to Whitehall to play the Vikings on Tuesday. Hesperia 47 Holton 30 A 3 point first quarter Panther lead expanded to a 20-8 margin by the break. The hosts were able to increase the margin to 16 entering the final frame. The Red Devils fired in more 4th quarter points than the previous three periods scoring 17 but the Panther lead proved too much to overcome and Hesperia held home court with their 3rd win in a row and 5th in the last 6 games. Emily Bayle once again paced the panther scoring attack with 16 while pulling down a game high 13 boards. Emmi Tinkham dropped in a dozen and Becci Castillo also reached double figures with 10. Hesperia (3-2, 6-6) will host Morley Stanwood on Wednesday while Holton (0-6, 2-10) will get a visit from Muskegon Heights on Tuesday. Kent City 54 White Cloud 20 A 21-8 first quarter lead propelled the Eagles to their 6th straight win and kept them atop the Silver standings a game ahead of Morley Stanwood. White Cloud (3-3,7-6) returns to action Monday when they host the Spartans of Mason County Central. Boys Fremont 58 Reed City 34 When Joshua Zerfas opened the scoring with a triple it gave the Packers a lead they held to the final buzzer The Pack led 10-6 after one and hit the break with a 26-14 advantage. “The beginning of the third quarter was as good as we have played in awhile and we were able to build a lead up to 45-24 after the third quarter and 56-26 lead with 5 minutes to go,” said Coach Zerfas. Braiden McDonald led the scoring attack with 17 points, Tristan Campbell hit for an even dozen to go with his 12 rebounds and Chris Kennedy also fired in 12 points. Carter Moon finished with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Fremont (11-1, 8-0) will host Orchard View on Tuesday. Holton 59 Hesperia 19. All the players on Holton’s team scored.
