Fremont 64 Tri County 37
If the Packers are going to move on in district play they will have to be stingy on defense.
They accomplished that on Monday holding a winless but scrappy Tri County team to just 15 points in the first three quarters to advance to a semi final matchup with Sparta.
The game went 2 ½ minutes before the 0-0 tie was broken when Riley Krim lofted a pass to Logan Karnemaat who spun and scored. After Friend converted twice from the line the twosome did the same move and on the next trip downcourt a Karnemaat block landed in Krim’s hands and he drove the court to make it 6-2 Packers. Jelinski scored for TC followed by baskets off the hands of Ben Schmidt and Calvin Miller. Karnemaat picked up his second foul sending Hannock to the line to convert a pair then Micah Whittle and Calvin Miller scored to end the first at 14-6 Fremont.
In the second Schmidt went the length of the court for a score then Friend answered for the Vikes.. 7 minutes and a dozen Packer points later Jelinski hit one at the buzzer for TC and the teams reached intermission with the Packers in front 28-10.
The second half saw the Packers come out of the locker room on fire as Schmidt split from the line then the Krim to Karnemaat connection tallied followed by Wyatt Kaastra,Schmidt and Karnemaat buckets and a dagger from distance by Bailey Baddis that made it a 21 point game
When Viking Hunter Merchant hit a triple it ended a 14 point run and was answered by a pair of Jaxx Miller shots, including an acrobatic flip that found the hole, and Baddis banged in another from beyond at the buzzer to end the third.
Karnemaat paced the Packer scoring with 14 points while Schmidt and Baddis finished with 9 each followed by Julian Echavarria and Carter Moon with a half dozen apiece.
Macario Castillo led the Vikings with 10 points with Jelinski, Merchant and Friend notching 6 each.
Fremont will tip off against the Spartans beginning at 6pm Wednesday at Tri County High School.
