You can feel it can’t you? I mean not just feel it but hear it and see it and smell it, right?

It is indeed summer friendly readers and fellow Mitten-dwellers because as of earlier this week when the sun expanded its daily visit to the longest tenure of the year, the official season has begun and we are one short little weekend of practice away from the explosive (at least in my neighborhood) holiday extravaganza known simply as ‘The 4th’.
So get cranking and immerse yourself in some of good times to be had here in this wondrous area we call our own.

Here’s your N3 tips for the coming days and remember despite what Eddie Cochran might have lamented in song,there is, indeed, a cure for the summertime blues.
In fact, I’d say there might be several right at hand.

Friday

It’s Market Time Folks!
Yes the farmer’s markets, those outdoor emporiums of epicurean edibles will be flinging open their doors to those of us who favor the flavor of home-grown garden gifts…….well actually just kind of setting up their tables rather than flinging open doors  but you get the drift.

Yes it is indeed the beginning of a locavore’s little slice of heaven as our local and regional agricultural enterprises bring their sumptuous goods to Brooks Park (Fridays) and the Fremont Marketplace (Saturdays and Tuesdays) to allow patrons a one-stop shopping venue for the wealth of tasty treats that will evolve from the early season offerings into the absolute cornucopia (with emphasis on the word corn) of flavorful options that come from our area food producers.

Brooks Park will be the site of this year’s season opener called the Farmer and Artisans Market, so make plans to take a pleasant stroll through the park and grab hold of some goodies.
We at N3 World Headquarters and Chipmunk Refuge are frequent fliers on Friday’s and find nothing more pleasing than snaring some of the well presented eats from Diamond View Farms, checking out the unique edibles at Salle Haverkamp’s always enticing booth and exploring the variety of vendors who pop in with some new offerings each visit.

​Saturday

It’s Star Party time at the Wessling!

Yes, I know it gets dark rather late with the solstice barely behind us and it is after all a summer nighttime in the Mitten so mosquito protection is advised, but if you’ve never been to the Stephan F Wessling Observatory West Baseline just off Stone Road for one of their viewings this might be the night to do so. It’s supposed to be rather clear (so far) and the emphasis will be on viewing Saturn’s moons. 

FYI Saturn has 62 moons that are known thus far including Titan which is bigger than our distant and rather warm neighbor Mercury and was also in the title of one   of  Kurt Vonnegut’s books “The Sirens of Titan”.

The festivities begin at 9pm and run until 11pm. It is fun for the whole family and gives you a little more appreciation for the view above when you’re camping, hanging by a fire or just wandering about late at night as some of us are given to do when there’s nothing compelling on TV.

Sunday

This weekend the Adam Scott Memorial Rodeo will be held both Saturday and Sunday at Cowboys and Clowns on 40th Street just east of M-37.
Sunday events feature Cowboy Church at 10am, free horse rides from 1-130pm, and rodeo events beginning at 2pm.

If you’re a rodeo lover we don’t need to tell you about this. You’ve more than likely been there for most if not all of the previous 13 versions of this well put together event.

If you are a novice to the whole rodeo scene it is a perfect venue for the uninitiated with its emphasis on family oriented activities and the chance to see some highly skilled athletes getting down to business and showing off their considerable riding skills.

So there you go Near Northians. A weekend of fun and frolicking awaits you in this final pre-4th of July warm-up to the really serious summer season.

And remember beyond the items found here there are many things happening in our area with music at some of our fine establishments and delectable dining to be had at our many eatatoriums. So get out there and patronize, people!
