Newaygo Brewing Co. will be hosting some fine afternoon tunes on Saturday when Jack Leaver brings his musical expertise to the venue for a noon to 4pm gig. Leaver has a strong following hereabouts so grabbing an early seat might be wise and besides the brews at this downtown Newaygo watering hole are outstanding and you can count on the discovery of a new favorite if you venture beyond your usual selection. Community Night with the Muskegon Lumberjacks at L.C. Walker Arena 7:15 Saturday. Hockey fan? I don’t mean you just follow the Wings when they’re going good (they’re currently not) and maybe watch the game on tv sometimes, I mean a fan of the game. Perhaps a purist or a devotee? Or maybe you have had a passing interest in the game but still find yourself to be a bit naive as to the rules and often wonder why there is so much fighting? Either way, seeing a game live at the Walker Arena where the Zephyrs, Mohawks Lumberjacks, Fury and now, once again, the 'Jacks do battle is an experience if only because the crowd in Muskegon is a true hockey crowd. Knowledgeable fans who are passionate about their team and have a tendency to get pretty boisterous but, of course, only when the game calls for it. Ten bucks gets you in on community night New Years Eve. It’s on a Monday and who can think of a better day to have the biggest celebration of the year when it comes to going out or getting together than a Monday? Several local establishments will be offering up Eve activities with music, food, drink and maybe a little dancing. House parties generally abound, both the adult-only variety as well as the whole family type where sitter issues are simplified by having the kids join in the fun. For some, a quieter, more intimate evening at home might be in their celebratory plans. While one can certainly make the argument that a day on a calendar means little other than scheduling, a New Year is a transition and as such should perhaps be given a bit of respect. Whatever the plans, take a little time to reflect on the past year and perhaps give a little thought to the one coming up. Then revel on, good readers, revel on. “Hope Smiles from the threshold of the year to come, Whispering 'it will be happier'...”- Alfred Lord Tennyson
