By N3WH staff A Little Hog Heaven The fine folks who make up the Friends Campaign Committee to support the efforts to build a new library in White Cloud will be hosting a community picnic featuring a pig roast Saturday from 3-6pm. at the facility. In addition to the porcine entree there will be salads, chips, drinks, and best of all, desserts all at a bargain price (see ad on our home page). And while you’re there you might give some thought to how vital libraries have become these days, evolving with the times particularly with regard to expanding internet access for our citizens who would otherwise go without. There has always existed a personal soft spot for libraries ever since a first encounter with a phenomenon known as... ...The Bookmobile. One summer day my Mom brought my sister and I along as she looked for a good read to help hold her sanity intact (we’d been out of school several weeks by now). Being rather young I had few choices at home other than golden books we had. But there on the shelves in this converted bus of some kind existed a bunch of books seemingly made for me. Large beautiful volumes with thick covers. If recollection serves, the words were few and the images plentiful so they were perfect for a novice reader as myself.
And some even came home with us. It was like a miracle. And while my tastes in reading have changed over the years (less pictures, more words) the feelings I have when I enter those hallowed halls have not. Support your libraries folks. ‘And we all shine on…’ Newaygo County Dark Sky Astronomers will be holding a star party Friday from 8pm- Midnight Friday at the S.F. Wessling Observatory 6523 Baseline Rd. North of Fremont. This is always a very cool event (when the weather cooperates) and there is nothing that puts one’s world into proper perspective like scoping out the immensity of the Universe. NCCA- Artsplace Check out the West Michigan Printmakers exhibit at NCCA Artsplace and while you’re there look into their cornucopia of classes like the ‘make and take’ kids art experience every Saturday from 11-12. And speaking of corn…... The market business is starting to heat up with the weather. N3 World Headquarters(N3WH) staff were at the Newaygo market last week (Brooks Park starting at noon each Friday) and scored not just blueberries, zucchini, and summer squash but as a bonus were able to also have a short chat with the guys from Diamond View Farms and talk a little high school football with our friend John Mellema. Tuesdays and Saturdays you can find these folks along with others at the Fremont Marketplace. To a sweetcorn connoisseur (cornosseur?) this is the season of anticipation. There are always a few early harvests out there and while a mere tease of what lies ahead, they will nonetheless become destinations in the coming days. Rumors abound this week about possible corn spottings at Magicland as well as a few smaller roadside places here and there that we’ve heard have begun to slap some ears on the tables. It will definitely require some investigation and samplings of these a‘maize’ing edibles but the crown jewels of corndom in the opinion of N3WH staff remain the beauties that emerge from the Kokx Farm and we will be making frequent journeys there once they toss open the gates. Driftwood Deck Tunes If you like your music and munchies al fresco and haven’t made it out to the Driftwood deck yet this summer, check out Stolen Horses (5-9pm) Saturday and/or He Said She Said Sunday (3-7pm). “Dunkirk” at Fremont Cinemas If you don’t know about Dunkirk go see this movie. No, we haven’t seen it yet either but listening to a story on All Things Considered swayed us. It’s based on one of the most amazing rescues in history when private citizens joined in a dramatic evacuation exercise manning a wide variety of watercraft to cross the English Channel and help bring back nearly 400,000 soldiers and sailors who were being converged upon by Nazi troops. The director Christopher Nolan is the guy who made those Dark Knight Batman movies so while this is perhaps a bit of a jump in genre for him it should be an interesting take on a most inspirational tale. Get Thee Outside Who knows what the weather will bring this weekend since the forecast seems a bit in flux from hour to hour. During those moments of meteorological clarity grab yourself and get outside to swim, boat, fish, hike, kayak,or play pickleball, whiffleball, or bocce ball. Go golfing with clubs or frisbees, tube, wade, picnic, do a campfire. This is the beloved season of warmth so dodge whatever rain might fall and take in some of the huge array of options offered to us in this glorious region.
