Sarah Potenza Returns to Dogwood’s Black Box on May 14 By Marianne Boerigter Pictured Left: Sarah Potenza Rock-and-roller and Season 8 “The Voice” contestant Sarah Potenza returns to the Dogwood Center’s Black Box at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. Potenza and her band wowed the Black Box crowd last summer with her powerful voice and songwriting. In anticipation of her return, we asked Potenza for her thoughts about music, performing – and playing at the Dogwood Center.
We’re excited to welcome you back to the Dogwood’s Black Box. What do you remember about last summer’s performance and your fans in here? I was overwhelmed by how much love for my music there was up there in Fremont. The place was packed, and there really was such a wonderful audience who listened to every word, who cheered and called out requests. And then after the show, getting to meet all the fans was so much fun A lot of people dream of being a professional musician. What’s the best part of your job? Being on stage and sharing my voice with all of you. Getting to sing out and share all the joy that is in my heart with the people. It's everything!!! Okay, now tell us about the unglamorous part … Missing out on important stuff like weddings and births. We live 1100 miles away from our family in RI, and we miss them so much. We are always running around the country chasing our dreams, we don't get to be there for all the little things that make a family a family. We don't have a 401K or a house, we don't know what is going to happen sometimes. But we trade all of that for a chance to share our music with you, the people. If you could host a dinner with four or five musicians or other artists, living or dead, who would you invite and why? Janis- duh! Charles Bradley - because I love his spirit, his singing inspires me. And Mavis Staples and her father Pops, I am just such a huge fan of the Staples family. It’s the kind of music that makes me smile. I turn it up and I feel so good. What’s on your playlist? My husband Ian and I travel together and perform as a duo. We have some new songs, and we have been doing some cool versions of some of the Sarah & the Tall Boys favorites too, and recently, we added a few Mavis tunes. ____________________________________________________________________ You can buy tickets to Sarah Potenza’s May 14 concert online at Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts.Dogwood Box Office Hours are Tuesday-Friday 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and two hours prior to an event.
