Flying Bear Books Opens March 1\ John and Marsha Reeves are planning on tossing open the doors to their new store this Wednesday. The couple, who will be in the same downtown Newaygo location as their worthy predecessor Bay Leaf Books, have issued an announcement about this latest addition to the downtown business landscape. We seem to be having an early spring here in Newaygo County, and the new/old bookstore in Newaygo is sprouting up with the grasses. Flying Bear Books will open it’s doors for the first time for sales at 10 AM on March first. We purchased the store contents from Bay Leaf Books in January and have spent the last several weeks creating a comfortable place for... ...people to explore the extensive selection of quality used books as well as putting the inventory into a computer database. Customers will be able to enjoy a sitting area with table and chairs, enjoy a $1 cup of coffee and a $1 cookie as they check out the books, magazines, artwork and jewelry on display. The River Stop Cafe, just down the street, will be providing the coffee and cookies and Flying Bear Books will also have some organic fresh fruit available for purchase.
The River Stop is not the only part of the community pitching in to help the bookstore.Local folks have donated hundreds of hours cleaning, hammering and sawing, dusting books, painting, arranging and logging books into the database. \ The Flying Bear extends deep gratitude to Valerie, Rod, Kathy, MaryAnn, Nan, Ray, Eileen, Roger, Kendra, Linda, Madeline, Gretchen, James, Jane, Sally, Georgia, Kyuss, Sue, Russell, Brenda, Elizabeth and Jake, with special thanks to Kathy Misak and Rod Geers. These people have really walked their talk of wanting the bookstore to stay in town. Kendra McKimmy’s sculpture and jewelry will be on display and available for purchase. Negotiations are underway with several other local artists with the hopes that they too will make their artwork available at the bookstore. In keeping with our commitment to ecological sustainability, Flying Bear Books is incorporating as many ‘green’ aspects as possible. We have invested in a high quality solid carbon water filter and will refill your water bottles for free, although a donation will be welcome. Pure filtered water will also be available for refreshment at the store. Coffee cups and water glasses are compostable paper and we will be recycling everything that can go into our Newaygo County single stream recycling, even your plastic water bottles. We will have a few plastic bags to protect your purchases if it’s truly pouring rain, but most purchases will be wrapped in newspaper (otherwise bound for the recycling bin) and wrapped with hemp twine. We (John and Marsha) are both old enough to remember that this is how things were done before plastic bags were in widespread use. The opening on March 1 is just the beginning. Our first special will be for POSTCARDS, 10 for $1 until March 15. You can choose from a wide selection of very interesting vintage postcards, some already used and some blank. Our store will be holding a Grand Opening Celebration later, after any early glitches have been worked out and things are rolling smoothly.
