Fair Time! By Marianne Boerigter For over 60 years, the Newaygo County Agricultural Fair has celebrated youth and agriculture in Newaygo County. The 2016 Fair runs from August 6 through 13 at the fairgrounds in Fremont. The fair features fun for the entire family including... ...livestock competitions and exhibits, farm Olympics, 4H competitions, contests, attractions, grandstand events and more.
General admission to the fairgrounds is free; parking is $5 and the evening grandstand events have separate charges. Events include the Junior Rodeo, Horse Pull, Antique Dirt Tractor Pull, and SJO Motocross. Thursday features the auction sale of animals. Animals are purchased for the auction each spring as an educational project for 4-H youth. Through the summer, the youth feed, care for and train their project animal while learning about the auction process. At fair time, they compete with their animal for awards including showmanship and market placings. The animals are then auctioned to local businesses, community groups, and families with the exhibitors keeping the proceeds of the sale. The week is packed with events and fun!
