College and Career Night Out Offers Vital Resources to Local Students Over 40 representatives from colleges, universities, trade schools, and military organizations converged on Fremont High School on October 12 for College and Career Night Out. The annual event drew high school students, family members, and adult students from across Newaygo County. All individuals enjoyed the opportunity to... ...learn more about post-secondary education, career opportunities, and financial aid.
WE CAN! Newaygo County—the local career and college access network—and Fremont Area Community Foundation (FACF) organized and sponsored the event. In addition to free pizza, a chance to learn about scholarships, and access to college and career representatives, the evening offered three informational sessions to give insight into financial aid and college affordability, hot jobs in Michigan, and navigating the transition to college life. “We are pleased to partner with WE CAN! Newaygo County on this great event,” said Jessica Folkema, FACF director of marketing and communications. “CCNO is a fantastic opportunity for local students and parents to meet with admissions representatives, learn about great careers, and find financial aid resources—all without leaving the county.” Other partners with a presence at the event included Early College Newaygo County, the Gerber Foundation, Michigan Works! West Central, Newaygo County Career-Tech Center, and Telamon. There were also opportunities to learn more about the FAFSA and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) services. Melissa Miller, student advancement consultant of WE CAN! Newaygo County, believes that College and Career Night Out presents a unique opportunity for students and families to get their questions answered about the next steps in their educational journeys. “I appreciate this event because it gives shape to what pursuing a post-secondary degree or credential can look like,” said Miller. “The unknown becomes more defined as students and families listen to these presentations, learn about local scholarships, and connect with post-secondary institutions and college access professionals.” Additional photos from College and Career Night Out can be viewed on the Community Foundation’s Facebook page at facebook.com/FremontAreaCF.
