![]() School Board Approves New Business Manager By Ken DeLaat At Monday's Newaygo School Board meeting members were divided during discussion of a motion to hire. The recommendation by Superintendent Dr. Peg Mathis to hire Kristin Melvin, current Newaygo Athletic Director, to the position of Business Manager drew questions and comments leading to a postponement on the vote until Thursday. The difference of opinion that led to Monday’s discussion... played out during Thursday ‘s vote as the board approved the hiring of Ms. Melvin in a split vote.
During discussion board member Melissa Swinehart expressed that a strong financial and accounting background as well as experience would be critical to the business manager position and also emphasized her agreement with Dr. Mathis’ complimentary appraisal of Ms. Melvin during Monday’s meeting. Despite having reservations she stated she would be voting yes. “I know this entire board will offer her support in her position,” she stated. Board member Jim Badgero stated his vote was based on the type of credentials he felt were needed for the position given the board’s responsibility for the public’s tax monies and board member Jackie Malsom also expressed reservations. Board member Vince Grodus spoke to his continued support of whatever decision the board came up with and encouraged all to do the same.The roll was called with Board President Bret Brummel, and members Jann Holeman, Reid Sherwood and Ms. Swinehart voting yes while Mr. Grodus, Mr. Badgero and Ms. Malsom cast no votes.
