The Muskegon River at Croton is at 11.51 feet. If you live within the impacted area, you should evacuate now.
WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW
MODERATE FLOODING IS OCCURING ON THE MUSKEGON RIVER. Inundation of homes, roads, and structures is occurring. If you live within the impacted area, and you have not already done so, you should evacuate now. If you need assistance safely getting out of your home, please contact the Newaygo County Emergency Operations Center at 231-689-7307.  
 
Widespread standing water is expected in low lying and flood prone areas. Flooding of small streams, urban and poor drainage locations continue to occur. Three USGS River Gauges are used to determine the river levels.  As of 5:30 am, the Muskegon River near

• USGS Croton Streamgage was at 11.51 feet with flows at 12,100 cubic feet per second. Flood stage is at 9.0 feet.
• USGS Newaygo Streamgage was at 14.10 feet with flows at 9,950 cubic feet per second. Flood stage is at 11.0 feet.
• USGS Bridgeton Streamgage was at 15.79 feet with flows at 9,360 cubic feet per second. Flood stage is at 13.0 feet.  

 Based on the current forecast, MODERATE FLOODING is occurring on the Muskegon River, with river levels rising to 11.8 feet at the USGS Croton Streamgage by this afternoon (Wednesday, February 21, 2018).  Reliability of the forecast is based on current and forecasted river, weather and reservoir conditions. 

WHAT TO EXPECT

• Expect standing water in low lying and flood prone areas.
• Expect MODERATE Flooding on the Muskegon River.
• Anticipate the following areas to be impacted by flood waters on the Muskegon River
  • Leisure Land Subdivision in Bridgeton Township
  • Sycamore Flats in Ashland Township
  • 100th Ave in Ashland Township
  • Old Women’s Bend in Garfield Township
  • Anderson Flat’s in Garfield Township
  • Freight Hill in Bridgeton Township
  • Homesite Park in Bridgeton Township
  • River Ridge in Ashland Township
  • Bell Meadow Drive in Bridgeton Township
  • Devil’s Hole in Brooks Township
  • Sarrell Street in the City of Newaygo

 
ROAD CLOSURES
The following roads are currently closed due to flooding:

• Warner Ave. between Baseline and 8th St
• 8 Mile Rd. between Comstock and Dickinson
• Luce Ave between 32nd & 24th in Dayton Township
• Elm and 8 Mile (Old M-20) intersection in Norwich Township.

In Muskegon County M-120 from Twin Lake to Maple Island is Closed. 

COMMUNITY INFORMATION

• ONLY CALL 9-1-1 TO REPORT EMERGENCIES!   Emergency operators and phone lines are needed to support this incident, please continue to monitor Nixle for updates or call 2-1-1 (not 9-1-1) for general safety information.

• AVOID THE AREA! Due to very unsafe river conditions that accompany rapid currents, high water, and dangerous debris, the public is being directed avoid the Muskegon River area until the Flood Warning has been lifted. Emergency assistance will not be available to persons choosing not to adhere to this warning.
• ALL PUBLIC ACCESS SITES REMAIN CLOSED! Due to unsafe conditions on the Muskegon River, per procedure, all Public Access Sites on the Muskegon River in Newaygo County are CLOSED until the Flood Warning has been lifted. Any use of these properties will be prohibited until further notice. Violation of this order shall be enforced under MCL 750.552 (Trespass) by State and Local law enforcement.
