Snyder appoints Gerber Memorial maternity doctor to state midwifery board Fremont-Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial’s Tami Michele, DO, board certified OB/GYN and chief of obstetrical services, has been appointed to the Michigan Board of Licensed Midwifery by Gov. Rick Snyder. "I am honored to accept this position appointed by the Governor,” Michele said. “I have always believed that collaboration of physicians and midwives leads to safe practices in prenatal care, birth, and results in healthy moms and babies. My work with the Board of Licensed Midwifery and policymakers will create positive change to serve the families in Michigan. The maternity care provided by the OB/GYN team at Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial has received national recognition, and I will bring the same patient-centered approach into my work for the State of Michigan." The 12-member board is situated within... ...the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and is tasked with establishing and implementing the licensure program for the practice of midwifery in Michigan.
In a statement, Gov. Snyder said: “I thank these individuals for their commitment to ensuring pregnant women and their babies are properly taken care of all across our state.” A resident of Fremont, Michele has worked at Gerber Memorial since 2009, where more than 500 babies are born each year. In addition to the state midwifery board, Michele is active in numerous professional organizations at the state and national levels. She is an executive committee member for the American College of Nurse-Midwives, is on the Advisory Council for the Michigan Section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, has co-authored a best practice guideline used by midwives, physicians, and hospitals across the country, and has been a speaker at many national conventions. Michele is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and a member of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Osteopathic Association.
